Estampagem incremental e soldagem FSW para fabricação de coletor solar

Este trabalho apresenta um modelo inovador de coletor solar plano, com placa absorvedora fabricada por Estampagem Incremental e Soldagem FSW (Friction Stir Welding). Esta placa absorvedora é constituída de duas chapas de alumínio AA1200-H14 com espessura de 1 mm, estampadas e soldadas em simetria, a fim de que na união das chapas sejam deixados canais para passagem de água. Neste estudo foi realizada a caracterização do material por Ensaio de Tração e Ensaio Nakajima. Para determinação dos parâmetros de Estampagem Incremental foram realizados 16 experimentos com ferramenta de diâmetro df = 9,5 mm, variando a rotação de N = 50 rpm a 800 rpm e o incremento vertical de Δz = 2 mm a 0,2 mm, mantendo o avanço em = 250 mm/min. E também foram realizados 3 experimentos com ferramenta df = 22 mm, variando o incremento vertical de Δz = 2 mm a 0,5 mm, mantendo a rotação em N = 50 rpm e o avanço em = 250 mm/min. Para determinação dos parâmetros de Soldagem FSW foram realizados 4 experimentos com ferramenta de ombro de diâmetro 8 mm e pino roscado M3x0,5, mantendo a rotação em N = 1500 rpm e variando o avanço entre = 100 mm/min a 400 mm/min. Em seguida foi fabricado um protótipo de placa absorvedora de coletor solar com área de 0,12 m². Nos experimentos realizados foi constatado que é possível obter maiores deformações na Estampagem Incremental do que na Estampagem Convencional e que as deformações são mais elevadas quando se utiliza menores diâmetros, maiores rotações e menores incrementos verticais da ferramenta. Na Soldagem FSW não foi constatada influência na qualidade do cordão de solda em relação à variação do avanço da ferramenta. Neste estudo também se verificou que é possível fabricar protótipos de placas absorvedoras de coletores solares pelos processos de Estampagem Incremental e Soldagem FSW. No entanto, para coletores em tamanho comercial, novos estudos são necessários para melhorar a forma de fixação das chapas durante a Soldagem FSW. / This work presents an innovative model of flat plate solar collector, with absorber plate manufactured using Incremental Sheet Forming (ISF) and Friction Stir Welding (FSW). This absorber plate consists of two AA1200-H14 aluminum sheets with a thickness of 1 mm, stamped and welded in symmetry, in order to leave channels for the passage of water. In this study the characterization of the material by Nakajima Test and Traction Test was performed. In order to determine the parameters of ISF, 16 experiments were performed with a tool of diameter df = 9.5 mm, varying the rotation speed of N = 50 rpm at 800 rpm and the step down of Δz = 2 mm to 0.2 mm, maintaining the feed rate at = 250 mm/min. In FSW, no influence was observed in the quality of the weld bead in relation to the variation of the tool feed rate. In this study it was also verified that it is possible to manufacture prototypes of solar collector absorber plates by the processes of ISF and FSW. However, for commercial size collectors, further studies are needed to improve the way the plates are fixed during FSW.

High Performance RF Circuit Design: High Temperature, Ultra-Low Phase Noise, and Low Complexity

Advanced achievements in the area of RF circuit design led to a significant increase in availability of wireless communications in everyday life. However, the rapid growth in utilizing the RF equipment has brought several challenges in different aspects of RF circuit design. This has been motivating researchers to introduce solution to cope with these challenges and further improve the performance of the RF circuits. In this dissertation, we focus on the improvements in three aspects of the circuit design. High temperature and temperature compensated transmitter design, ultra-low phase noise signal generators, and compact and low complexity polar transmitter design. Increase in the ambient temperature can impact the performance of the entire communication system. However, the RF hardware is main part of the system that is under the impact of the temperature variations in which it can change the characteristics of the individual building blocks of the RF chain. Moreover, transistors are the main elements in the circuit whose performance variation must be consider when the design target is compensating the temperature effects. The influence of the temperature variation is studied on the transistors and the building blocks in order to find the most effective approaches to compensate these variations and stabilize the performance of the RF chain at temperatures up to 220 C. A temperature sensor is designed to sense these variations and adjust the characteristics of the circuit components (e.g. bias voltages), accordingly. Further, a new variable gain phase shifter (VGPS) architecture is introduced toward minimizing the temperature impact on its performance in a phased-array transmitter architecture. Finally, a power amplifier as the last stage in a transmitter chain is designed and the variation in its performance with temperature is compensated through the VGPS stage. The transmitter is prototyped to evaluate its performance in practice. Another contribution of this dissertation is to introduce a novel voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) structure to reduce the phase noise level below state-of-the-art. The noise to phase noise mechanism in the introduced doubly tuned oscillator is studied using linear time-variant (LTV) theory to identify the dominant noise sources and either eliminate or suppress these noise sources by introducing effective mechanism such as impedance scaling. The designed VCO is fabricated and measurement results are carried out that justified the accuracy of the analyses and effectiveness of the introduced design approach. Lastly, we introduce a compact and simple polar transmitter architecture. This type of transmitters was firstly proposed to overcome the serious shortcomings in the IQ transmitters, such as IQ imbalance and carrier leakage. However, there is still several challenges in their design. We introduce a transmitter architecture that operates based on charge to phase translation mechanism in the oscillator. This leads to significantly reduction in the design complexity, die area, and power dissipation. Further, it eliminates a number of serious issues in the design such as sampling rate of the DACs. comprehensive post-layout simulations were also performed to evaluate its performance. / Doctor of Philosophy / To keep up with the ever-growing demand for exchanging information through a radio frequency (RF) wireless network, the specification of the communication hardware (i.e. transmitter and receiver) must be improved as the bottleneck of the system. This has been motivating engineers to introduce new and efficient approaches toward this goal. In this dissertation however, we study three aspects of the circuit design. First, variation in the ambient temperature can significantly degrade the performance of the communication system. Therefore, we study these variations on the performance of the transmitter at high temperature (i.e. above 200 C). Then, the temperature compensation approaches are introduced to minimize the impact of the temperature changes. The effectiveness of the introduced techniques are validated through measurements of the prototyped transmitter. Second, signal generators (i.e. oscillators) are the inseparable blocks of the transmitters. Phase noise is one of the most important specifications of the oscillators that can directly be translated to the quality and data rate of the communication. A new oscillator structure targeting ultra-low phase noise is introduced in the second part of this dissertation. The designed oscillator is fabricated and measured to evaluate its performance. Finally, a new polar transmitter architecture for low power applications is introduced. The transmitter offers design simplicity and compact size compared to other polar transmitter architectures while high performance.

A risk based approach for managing information technology security risk within a dynamic environment

Information technology (IT) security, which is concerned with protecting the confidentiality, integrity and availability of information technology assets, inherently possesses a significant amount of known and unknown risks. The need to manage IT security risk is regarded as an important aspect in the daily operations within organisations. IT security risk management has gained considerable attention over the past decade due to the collapse of some large organisations in the world. Previous investigative research in the field of IT security has indicated that despite the efforts that organisations use to reduce IT security risks, the trend of IT security attacks is still increasing. One of the contributing factors to poor management of IT security risk is attributed to the fact that IT security risk management is often left to the technical security technologists who do not necessarily employ formal risk management tools and reasoning. For this reason, organisations find themselves in a position where they do not have the correct approach to identify, assess and treat IT security risks. The IT security discipline is complex in nature and requires specialised skills. Organisations generally struggle to find a combination of IT security and risk management skills in corporate markets. The scarcity of skills leaves organisations with either IT security technologists who do not apply risk management principles to manage IT security risk or risk management specialists who do not understand IT security in order to manage IT security risk. Furthermore, IT is dynamic in nature and introduces new threats and vulnerabilities as it evolves. Taking a look at the development of personal computers over the past 20 years is indicative of how change has been constant in this field, from big desktop computers to small mobile computing devices found today. The requirement to protect IT against threats associated with desktops was far less than the requirement associated with protecting mobile devices. There is pressure for organisations to ensure that they stay abreast with the current technology and associated risks. Failure to understand and manage IT security risk is often cited as a major cause of concern within most organisations’ IT environments because comprehensive approaches to identify, assess and treat IT security risk are not consistently applied. This is due to the fact that the trend of IT security attacks across the globe is on the increase, resulting in gaps when managing IT security risk. Employing a formal risk based approach in managing IT security risk ensures that risks of importance to an organisation are accounted for and receive the correct level of attention. Defining an approach of how IT security risk is managed should be seen as a fundamental task and is the basis of this research. This study aims to contribute to the field of IT security by developing an approach that assists organisations in treating IT security risk more effectively. This is achieved through the use of a combination of existing best practice IT security frameworks and standards principles, basic risk management principles, as well as existing threat modelling processes. The approach developed in this study serves to encourage formal IT security risk management practices within organisations to ensure that IT security risk is accounted for by senior leadership. Furthermore, the approach is anticipated to be more proactive and iterative in nature to ensure that external factors that influence the increasing trend of IT security threats within the IT environment are acknowledged by organisations as technology evolves. / Computing / M.
