The effect of the perfect enemy : Anonymous' representation in the news media

van de Bunt, Emily January 2016 (has links)
After the attacks in Paris on November 13th 2015, the movement Anonymous has declared a cyber war to terrorist group ISIS that claimed responsibility for these attacks. According to Klein (2015) Anonymous has earlier been framed by the news media as malicious prankster, because their choice of targets did not align with western standards. However, ISIS can be seen as a common enemy of the West. As such, what is the effect of this newly chosen target on the representation of the movement in the media? Departing from this question, this thesis aims to research whether the attributes in use to represent Anonymous in the news media have normatively changed due to the taking on of a common western enemy. In fulfilling this aim, 21 articles published before and 21 articles published after the public declared war on ISIS on November 13th have been analysed based upon second level agenda setting theory. Focus is placed upon the attributes that describe Anonymous in the news media agenda and how these normatively evaluate the movement. In doing so, findings of this analysis present a change in the evaluation of the movement towards a more positive depiction.

Egyptomania in Hellenistic Greece : A study based on water in the cult of Isis / Egyptomani in Hellenistisk Grekland : En studie baserad på vatten i Isis kulten

Boender, Alexandra January 2019 (has links)
The present study examines the function and religious symbolism of water in the Isis sanctuaries in Hellenistic Greece. This is achieved through a survey of all the Isis sanctuaries in Greece dating to the Hellenistic period and the water installations. This study also examined how water was provisioned to the sanctuaries and how Egypt, particularly the Nile was, perceived by the Greeks. In addition, to what degree the cult of Isis was the result of Egyptomania that swept across Greece has been studied. The result shows that water provision through rainwater carried a religious meaning rather than the water installations design or location. This result is based on a Greek awareness of the meaning of the Nile within ancient Egyptian religion. The Greeks adapted their observations on what was Egyptian into their own Isis cult and for this reason the cult was an expression of Egyptomania.

Foreign Fighter Recruitment Messaging and the ‘Islamic State’

Nelson, Jacob M. 01 May 2017 (has links)
The so called ‘Islamic State,’ an Islamic extremist organization which currently controls large swaths of territory in the Middle East, has attracted foreign fighters to its insurgency in tens of thousands. Until just recently, foreign fighters were not well researched or understood separately from local fighters. David Malet (2013) argues that insurgencies recruit foreign fighters by persuading them to defend a ‘common group’ against a threatening enemy. This ‘defensive mobilization,’ he believed, was critical to recruiting foreign fighters throughout history. After preliminary analysis, the Islamic State presented evidence contrary to this theory, and it seemed dubious that they would use defensive mobilization to recruit foreign fighters. By analyzing at Islamic State’s recruitment propaganda, this research found that the Islamic State did indeed break with Malet’s understanding of foreign fighters. Interestingly, the Islamic State instead invoked the religious duty to conquer on behalf of a legitimate religious state and restore Islamic dominion over the world. These findings may serve to increase our understanding of the Islamic State in general and will likely cause us to make adjustments in how we understand foreign fighter recruitment to other civil conflicts.

Does Revolution Breed Radicalism? An Analysis of the Stalled Revolution in Syria and the Radical Forces Since Unleashed

Little, Ryan King 03 November 2014 (has links)
This thesis examines the turn to conflict in Syria during 2011 to see if it is revolutionary in nature and if so, why has it not succeeded? This thesis aims to analyze the anatomy of Syria's "revolution" in order to determine the causes behind the initial popular mobilization and transition to conflict. Then, further analysis of the essential elements of successful revolutionary movements will be undertaken to reveal what conditions remain unmet for Syria to culminate in a full revolutionary transformation. Special attention will be paid to the revolutionary Opposition itself, since, to date, it has proved unable to generate the power necessary to destroy the old order and rebuild a new system. The significant role of external intervention will also be addressed, since these forces have simultaneously helped cause the conflict, prolong the conflict and prop up the regime. Finally, the negative consequences of undertaking a revolutionary process, especially when left only partially complete, will be highlighted throughout the study. Syria's own "rise of the radicals," has manifested itself in the phenomenon of ISIL or ISIS, which has proven the strongest and most violent Opposition group to emerge from Syria's revolutionary environment.

Isisavbilder i egyptisk och romersk konst : Gudinnans symboliska och estetiska betydelse för de olika kulturerna. / Images of Isis in Egyptian and Roman art : The Goddess Symbolic and Esthetic Significance in the different cultures

Andersson, Emelie January 2018 (has links)

Studies on Secondary Metabolites from the Bamboo Coral Isis hippuris

Chen, Wei-Hua 05 September 2011 (has links)
Previous studies on the secondary metabolites of Formosan octocoral Isis hippuris were collected only at Green Island. In the course of our studies on secondary metabolites from marine organisms, the acetone-solubles of the Formosan octocoral Isis hippuris collected at Orchid Island has led to the isolation of eleven polyoxygenated steroids (1¡V11), along with two known compounds (12 and 13). The structures of these compounds were determined on the basis of their spectroscopic and physical data, including NMR, IR, MS, etc. The cytotoxicity against of A-549 (human lung epithelial carcinoma), HT-29 (human colon adenocarcinoma), and P-388 (mouse lymphocytic leukemia) cells, and anti-HCMV (human cytomegalovirus) activity of metabolites 1¡V13 were evaluated. Compounds 12 and 13 displayed cytotoxicity against P-388 cell line with ED50 values of 3.2 and 3.6 £gg/mL, respectively. Compound 12 exhibited cytotoxicity against A-549 cell line with an ED50 value of 3.8 £gg/mL. Compound 8 exhibit inhibitory activity against HCMV, with EC50 values of 2.0 £gg/mL.

Studies on Secondary Metabolites of the Formosan Gorgonian Isis hippuris and Virgularia juncea

Chen, Shin-Pin 27 July 2001 (has links)
Abstract In our continuing studies on the chemical constituents of Taiwanese octocorals, the gorgonian coral Isis hippuris and the sea pen coral Virgularia juncea, which were collected from the coast of Green Island and Peng-Hung Islands, respectively, have been the subjects of our investigations. Six compounds, including two new steroids, hippuristerones A and E (1 and 2), along with three known steroids 3£]-hydroxy-5£\-pregnan -20-one (3), prenga-4-ene-3,20-dione (4), prenga-1,4-diene-3,20-dione (5) and a known sesquiterpene subergorgic acid (6) were isolated from I. hippuris. Four compounds, incoulding a new sesquterpene, junceol A (7) and two known diterpenoids, sclerophytin A (8), cladiellisin (9) and a known steroid 24-methylenecholesterol (10) were isolated from V. juncea. The structures of above isolates were determined by physical (mp and optical rotation) and extensive spectral (UV, IR, MS, HRMS, 1D and 2D NMR) analysis and by comparison with the related physical and spectral data from other known compounds. The structure, including the relative configuration of hippuristerone A (1) was further confirmed by a single-crystal X-ray analysis.Furthermore, the relative configuration of hippuristerone E (2) was supported by the chemical dynamics calculations.

Futher Studies on the Steroidal Natural Productsfrom the Formosan Gorgonian Isis hippuris

Huang, L.-F. 01 September 2002 (has links)
Abstract Several sesquiterpenes isolated from a Formosan gorgonian coral Isis hippuris have shown significant cytotoxic activity against various cancer cell lines. In order to search other active components, we have investigated the chemical constituent of I. hippuris from a Green Island specimen. In the cytotoxcity assay, the EtOAc extract showed potent cytotoxic response toward P-388, A549 and HT-29 cancer cell lines. Thus, the investigation on the chemical content of this extract was carried out. This study finally led to the isolation of twelve steroids(1-12). Nine metabolites, hippuristerone G (1)¡Bhippuristerone H (2), hippuristerone I (3)¡Bhippuristerone J (4)¡Bhippuristerol E (5)¡B2a,3a-diacetoxy-24-methyl- 11b,18; 18,20b; 22,25-triepoxy-5a-furostane (7)¡B2a,3a-diacetoxy-11b- hydroxy-24-methyl-22,25-epoxy-5a-furostan-18,20b-lactone (10)¡B3a- acetoxy-11b,18a-dihydroxy-24-methyl-18,20b; 22,25-diepoxy-5a- furostane (11) and 2a,3a-diacetoxy-11b,18a-dihydroxy-24-methyl-18, 20b; 22,25-diepoxy-5a-furostane (12) are new compounds, whereas hippuristerone A (6), 3a-acetoxy-24-methyl-11b,18; 18,20b; 22,25- triepoxy-5a-furostane (7) and 3a-acetoxy-11b-hydroxy-24-methyl-22,25- epoxy-5a-furostan-18,20b-lactone (9) are known compounds. The structures of 1-12 were elucidated by spectroscopic evidences (IR, MS, 1D NMR, 2D NMR) and chemical method. The stereochemistries of compounds 7 and 9 were further confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. Cytotoxicity test revealed that hippuristerone I (3) exhibited moderate inhibition toward NCI cancer cell line.

Not Our Fight Alone: An Analysis of the US Strategy Combating the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria

Kelly, James E 01 January 2015 (has links)
The recent policies of former Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, combined with the collapse of the Syrian state in 2011, created conditions that led to the rise of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, or “ISIS.” As of November 2014, ISIS controls large areas of western and northern Iraq and northern and eastern Syria, an area roughly the size of Belgium. The rise of ISIS in the past three years has caught the attention of every major nation, especially the United States, and world leaders are justified in fearing a strong ISIS in the Middle East. The purpose of this paper is to provide an analysis of the US strategy in combating the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. The effectiveness of the United States strategy is closely linked with numerous factors, including the history of sectarian violence in Iraq. These factors will be explored throughout the paper. This analysis sheds light on the strengths and weaknesses of the US strategy and provides various ways the US can further its goals in the region.
