At this border, stands out not the image as an independent object, not the understanding of the image exclusively from men’s perspective, but the relationships between men and images. To study those relationships, it proposes an analytic division between a bonding dimension, based on sensible and affective forms of connection, and an interpretation dimension, more related to forms of constructing perceptual images and to the visual interpretation of them. The main focus of the research is the contemporary dynamics of image consumption, marked, as we argue, by the imbrications of three logics: “mediatic”, “of consumption” and “of aesthetization”. We consider especially relevant to the understanding of those dynamics the incorporation of a historical approach able to scrutiny a myriad of events, temporally close or distant, in which the image played a central role canalizing social tensions.

Turková, Barbora January 2020 (has links)
The diploma thesis deals with the depiction of the media and journalism in Czech prose of the 1960s. From the point of view of the entire period of the communist regime's rule in Czechoslovakia, the 1960s are a time of easing political and social conditions, which was also reflected in the literature. The aim of this work is to show the image of the media and journalism in Czech prose in the period in the broader genesis of the portrayal of the media in Czech literature and also with regard to the historical social and cultural context of the 1960s. Moreover, the thesis illustrates through content and text analysis, how individual works of literature describes the medial landscape and the way media officers and their functions are portrayed. Furthermore, the thesis examines the perception of journalists by a society living under the communist regime and how the journalists perceived themselves.

Šukytė, Viktorija 25 November 2010 (has links)
[toliau žr. visą tekstą] / The purpose of this paper is to examine how the British press shapes the image of Lithuania. To achieve the result certain questions were raised: how often is Lithuania mentioned in the selected newspapers; what are the major topics/coverage that mention Lithuania; what is the role of Lithuania in those topics; what attitude is being formed towards Lithuania in those topics; what means are used in the image formation. Two major British newspapers The Times and The Guardian were taken for the analysis of the articles. For the research all articles between the period of the 1st January to the 31st December 2008 were used. The methods of content analysis were mostly applied though the comparison of different newspapers was also selected. The paper is divided into two main parts. The first part is used to present the general views on the media, theoretical approach, main research on national image that is formed by the media. The second part reveals the means of how and the reasons why certain sources for the reaseach were selected: the selection of the media, newspapers, articles and periods; defining the variables and formation of the code (coding schemata); gathering of information; data analysis; concluding remarks. The conclusion that was arrived is as follows. Both newspapers presented Lithuania in slightly different ways. The Times had less articles about Lithuania and the country was presented in a quite narrow context (home news) as one of the East European countries... [to full text]

Also analyzed are the ways of seeing of the youngsters that participated in the search and who live similar situations to those represented in the images. Initially, the methodology used to select the images from the newspaper s records is presented, and their classification by themes, expression and contents, is dealt with. A reading of the images was undertaken together with the adolescents who live in shelter houses as well as those circulating by the social work service. On the presupposition that the newspaper contributes to the building of the social imagery, we discuss the irruption of imagery in human nature and in the relation between the media and social representations. The presence of the imagery is pointed to in the journalistic production and reception regarding news and images, and also in the formulation of the social representations by the media. Further analyzed are the context of the photographic image production and its recurrent patterns based on themes and spatial and body attributes that impose meanings (visible or invisible) to the representations.

Analysis of 3D echocardiography

Chykeyuk, Kiryl January 2014 (has links)
Heart disease is the major cause of death in the developed world. Due to its fast, portable, low-cost and harmless way of imaging the heart, echocardiography has become the most frequent tool for diagnosis of cardiac function in clinical routine. However, visual assessment of heart function from echocardiography is challenging, highly operatordependant and is subject to intra- and inter observer errors. Therefore, development of automated methods for echocardiography analysis is important towards accurate assessment of cardiac function. In this thesis we develop new ways to model echocardiography data using Bayesian machine learning methods and concern three problems: (i) wall motion analysis in 2D stress echocardiography, (ii) segmentation of the myocardium in 3D echocardiography, and (iii) standard views extraction from 3D echocardiography. Firstly, we propose and compare four discriminative methods for feature extraction and wall motion classification of 2D stress echocardiography (images of the heart taken at rest and after exercise or pharmalogical stress). The four methods are based on (i) Support Vector Machines, (ii) Relevance Vector Machines, (iii) Lasso algorithm and Regularised Least Squares, (iv) Elastic Net regularisation and Regularised Least Squares. Although all the methods are shown to have superior performance to the state-of-the-art, one conclusion is that good segmentation of the myocardium in echocardiography is key for accurate assessment of cardiac wall motion. We investigate the application of one of the most promising current machine learning techniques, called Decision Random Forests, to segment the myocardium from 3D echocardiograms. We demonstrate that more reliable and ultrasound specific descriptors are needed in order to achieve the best results. Specifically, we introduce two sets of new features to improve the segmentation results: (i) LoCo and GloCo features with a local and a global shape constraint on coupled endoand epicardial boundaries, and (ii) FA features, which use the Feature Asymmetry measure to highlight step-like edges in echocardiographic images. We also reinforce the traditional features such as Haar and Rectangular features by aligning 3D echocardiograms. For that we develop a new registration technique, which is based on aligning centre lines of the left ventricles. We show that with alignment performance is boosted by approximately 15%. Finally, a novel approach to detect planes in 3D images using regression voting is proposed. To the best of our knowledge we are the first to use a one-step regression approach for the task of plane detection in 3D images. We investigate the application to standard views extraction from 3D echocardiography to facilitate efficient clinical inspection of cardiac abnormalities and diseases. We further develop a new method, called the Class- Specific Regression Forest, where class label information is incorporating into the training phase to reinforce the learning from semantically relevant to the problem classes. During testing the votes from irrelevant classes are excluded from voting to maximise the confidence of output predictors. We demonstrate that the Class-Specific Regression Random Forest outperforms the classic Regression Random Forest and produces results comparable to the manual annotations.

Hmotné fikce: Pohyb mezi obrazy současného umění / Material Fictions: Moving (Between) Images of Contemporary Art

Purkrábková, Noemi January 2021 (has links)
7 Abstract This master's thesis engages moving images of contemporary art in order to sketch out certain ontological qualities of the digital image and imaginary, as they increasingly spill out of all fixed frames and fill the spaces between screens, contexts, and human and non-human agents. Following Steven Shaviro's observation that digital media brought about a completely "new regime" of mutable technical imaging often independent of any preceding "real" space, but instead able to produce its own space-time, this text treats moving images as performative world-shaping fictions with tangible traction on reality. Instead of understanding their growing proliferation in terms of the often-mourned disappeared correspondence to some previous reality, depth or truth, it suggests taking their fluidity as an opportunity to rethink the very divide placed between reality and fiction, as it continues to blur throughout our interactions with digital media, and to treat images not as mere representations but as material forces intensively active in the physical matter of the world, as well as in our own cognition. To articulate this irreducible materiality of digital image-fictions, the thesis weaves together on one hand respective philosophical concepts of François Laruelle and Gillese Deleuze and Félix Guattari -...
