Medieval Courtly Love: The Links between Courtly Love, Christianity, and the Roles of Women in Tennyson and Morris.Warden, Tonya 01 May 2001 (has links) (PDF)
The art of courtly love is difficult to pinpoint because there are many facets that extend into different areas. In the Pre-Raphaelite and Medieval periods, love was more formulated with rules, moral standards, and codes. Courtly love is often seen as the "love" practiced by kings, queens, and other nobility because of the mystique that surrounds legendary stories like Lancelot and Guinevere. Courtly love encompasses spiritual awakening, lust, passion, adultery, and religion; therefore, the art of courtly love intrigues as well as interests its readers.
Many critics have studied the effects of courtly love in literature and have come to the conclusion that courtly love was not only linked to Christianity, but that courtly love was also linked with other religions and philosophies. The link between Christianity and courtly love is the largest debate between critics and scholars within this particular genre.
Women have also played a part in understanding courtly love because of their complex role within the storylines of the literary poems. Women were often seen as the stronger of the sexes; however, they were viewed as objects instead of people. In courtly love, women were often the downfall of men because of their idle ways and abilities to deceive men. Women are important for the understanding of the rules and courtships between men and women during this period.
Tennyson and Morris had the most influential courtly love literature during the Pre-Raphaelite period. Their contributions to the tale of the Arthurian Legend are inherent to the understanding of this genre of courtly love. With Idylls of the King, Tennyson brought a resurgence of interest in the Arthurian Legend. His Idylls are various stories about the trials and tribulations of Arthur's life and others in Camelot. Morris followed the brilliance of Tennyson's Idylls with The Defense of Guinevere, which is a poem solely based on Guinevere's perspective and point of view. These two authors sought to create a myth around the Arthurian Legend with great vigor and their own poetic style.
There has been a plethora of discussion on the topic of courtly love; however, there has not a been a common agreement on its origins. This study shows how courtly love relates to literature during the Pre-Raphaelite period, most especially in the Arthurian Legend.

Expected Happiness, Love, and Longevity of Marriage: Effects of Wedding Type Preference, Gender, and Location of the Wedding Ceremony.Rudd, Karen Sue 03 May 2003 (has links) (PDF)
Gender and wedding type preference affect views of those who get married in a courthouse as opposed to a church. The participants for this study consisted of 198 unmarried, undergraduate students that planned to marry someday. Participants responded to a wedding location scenario then completed a wedding type preference questionnaire, the Life Orientation Test Revised, and a demographics questionnaire. Results revealed that group 1 (participants who were high on traditional wedding preference and received the scenario of courthouse wedding ceremony), rated the hypothetical couple as having a higher chance of being happy after 25 years of marriage and being more in love than group 2 (high traditional and church scenario), group 3 (low traditional and courthouse scenario), and group 4 (low traditional and church scenario). For participants whose parents were divorced, the age of the participant when their parents divorced was a significant predictor of predicted happiness and length of marriage.

Aristotle and Romantic Love : A Study of Romantic Love and If It Can Be Part of Aristotle's EudaimoniaInzsöl, Anna-Maria January 2023 (has links)
This essay will research aspects of romantic love, as well as aspects of Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics. The purpose of the essay is to discuss if romantic love can be part of virtue ethics and eudaimonia. The philosopher Raja Halwani presents two concepts of romantic love that are relevant to the discussion. The concepts are romantic love 1 and romantic love 2. The first one is a new love, where the partners only want to be with each other. The second type of love is closer to companionship where the partners are familiar with each other and have been together for a long time. To contrast this, I will use Martin Hägglund’s theory concerning romantic love. In Hägglund’s theory love is built upon the care we feel for our partners. However, it is the fear that the loved one can be taken away from us that constitutes this care. In the end, one of the two concepts Raja Halwani were determined to be virtuous and part of eudaimonia. Hägglund’s theory was partly virtuous due to the care he deems that we feel for our loved ones.

To live in a relationship demands hard work with good communications, mutual respect, compromises, empathy and an understanding of your partners feelings and needs. For a person with ADHD all of this can cause difficulties and create a strained relationship, but it can also mean a relationship with thrills, adventure, spontaneity and passion. This study is built on a qualitative method using triangulation, where the studies empirical materials consist of 4 interviews along with observations online. The empirical material is applied on the theories: love, conflict and coping. The purpose of this paper is to increase the understanding of how it is to live in a relationship with a partner who has been diagnosed with ADHD. The questions at issue are: How does everyday life work with a partner who has ADHD? What different aspects (positive and negative) are there to live in a relationship with a partner that has ADHD? How is the possible if any help and support perceived in their relationship and everyday life? The results showed that a relationship with a partner that has ADHD looks like any other relationship, but that it can differ due to the possible difficulties that are at hand. Results also showed that there is a lack of support and aid, both for the partner with ADHD and for the partner without ADHD.

“We Are Just Magic”: A Qualitative Examination of Self-Love Among Black Same-Gender Loving MenBrooks, Byron D., Kaniuka, Andréa R., Motley, Darnell N., Job, Sarah A., Williams, Stacey L. 01 January 2022 (has links)
Objectives: Black same-gender loving men (BSGLM) represent a population with understudied lived experiences as both racial and sexual minority individuals. Most existing research among BSGLM focuses on sexual health outcomes in the context of minority stress, without consideration of the full experiences of BSGLM or strengths-based approaches. The present study aimed to address this gap in the literature by examining self-love among BSGLM using a phenomenological qualitative approach. Method: Adult BSGLM in the U.S. (n = 19; Mage = 31.79 years [SD = 8.88]) were recruited online and completed interviews via phone and video conferencing. Data were coded independently by two trained coders via an iterative approach that included in vivo coding and line-by-line comparative coding. Codes were grouped thematically, guided by sexual minority identity and positive psychology literature. Results: Three major themes related to self-love among BSGLM emerged: (a) Freedom of identity, meaning participants’ ability to construct an identity outside of societal expectations; (b) Community connection and pride, or participants’ connection to and pride derived from the BSGLM community; and (c) Adversarial growth and resilience, or ways that adversity related to BSGLM identity generated personal growth. Conclusions: Current findings may have clinical implications. Using narrative therapy approach, facilitating connectedness to the BSGLM community, and implementing gratitude interventions in therapeutic settings may enhance self-love and positive self-regard among BSGLM. Future research should continue to give voice to the full lived experience of BSGLM.
