Assessing Workplace Design: Applying Anthropology to Assess an Architecture Firm’s Own Headquarters DesignRamer, S. Angela 12 1900 (has links)
Corporations, design firms, technology, and furniture companies are rethinking the concept of the ‘workplace’ environment and built ‘office’ in an effort to respond to changing characteristics of the workplace. The following report presents a case study, post-occupancy assessment of an architecture firm’s relocation of their corporate headquarters in Dallas, TX. This ethnographic research transpired from September 2013 to February 2014 and included participant observation, employee interviews, and an office-wide employee survey. Applying a user-centered approach, this study sought to identify and understand: 1) the most and least effective design elements, 2) unanticipated user-generated (“un-designed”) elements, 3) how the workplace operates as an environment and system of design elements, and 4) opportunities for continued improvement of their work environment. This study found that HKS ODC successfully increased access to collaborative spaces by increasing the size (i.e. number of square feet, number of rooms), variety of styles (i.e. enclosed rooms, open work surfaces), and distribution of spaces throughout the office environment. An increase in reported public transit commuting from 6.5% at their previous location to 24% at HKS ODC compares to almost five times the national public transit average (5%) and fifteen times the rate of Texas workers (1.6%) and Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, TX Metro Area (1.5%). This supports the real estate decision and design intent of the office that relocating near public transit would increase use (nearly six times that of reported use at 1919 McKinney, 6.5%). Additional findings and discussion relate to HKS ODC’s design enabling increased access to natural light and improved air quality, increased cross-sector collaboration, increased connection to downtown Dallas and engagement with the larger Dallas architectural community, as well as the open office environment encouraging education between all employee levels. Discrepancies between designed ‘flexibility’ and work away from the desk are explored along with the role of technology to facilitate work without replacing face-to-face interaction. This work also identifies key challenges with the design and employee experience and provides recommendations for addressing areas of concern for continued improvement of the workplace design. Continued user-centered research in the field of workplace design is necessary to assess the effect of current interventions in other office environments for comparison and inform future endeavors.

Obchodování s kreditními deriváty na světových finančních trzích / Trading in credit derivatives on world financial marketsŠotlíková, Lucie January 2011 (has links)
The thesis is focused on the process of trading in credit derivatives on the global financial markets. The first part deals with the history and the development of credit derivatives from the very beginning to the present and all factors that influenced and affected them during that time. Various derivative instruments are explained, in terms of their purpose, suitability for use and the risks arising from them. Mainy focus of the thesis is put on the selected stock markets (CME Group Inc., Eurex AG, NYSE Liff Holdings LLC). This section begins with their history, then it describes their structure and purpose. It explains stock market membership conditions and settlement of exchange contracts principles. The final part clarifies the role of credit derivatives in the financial crisis and the reasons that led to it. In the final part of the thesis organizations that regulate credit derivatives are described, in addition to regulation methods and aids, specifically in terms of new regulatory measures under Basel III and the organization of ISDA, which are also included. At the very end the possibilities of securitization and credit risk diversification are explained as well as methods of credit instruments valuation, which are demonstrated on an example of Credit Default Swap.

Antigen Trafficking within Chlamydia trachomatis-Infected Polarized Human Endometrial Epithelial Cells.Giles, David Kelley 03 May 2008 (has links)
Chlamydia trachomatis serovars D-K are the leading cause of bacterially-acquired sexually transmitted infections in the United States. As an obligate intracellular pathogen, C. trachomatis infects columnar epithelial cells of the genital mucosae and can cause deleterious sequelae such as pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility, and ectopic pregnancy. Several chlamydial antigens reach the host cell cytosol prior to the natural release of chlamydiae at the end of the developmental cycle. While some of these extra-inclusion antigens traffic to the host cell surface, others remain intracellular where they are proposed to influence vital host cell functions and antigen trafficking and presentation. The research herein examines the escape and trafficking of the immunodominant chlamydial antigens MOMP, LPS, and cHsp60 within C. trachomatis serovar E-infected polarized human endometrial epithelial cells. Studies using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and immuno-TEM report the novel escape mechanism of chlamydial antigens via vesicles everted/pinched off from the inclusion membrane, an occurrence observed both in the presence and absence of the antibiotic azithromycin. These extra-inclusion vesicles were differentiated from Golgi vesicles and were shown to deliver chlamydial heat shock protein 60 (cHsp60)-homologs 2 and 3, but not homolog 1, to the infected cell surface. Examination of the iron-responsiveness of the three cHsp60 homologs by immuno-TEM revealed a significant increase in cHsp60-2 following iron deprivation. Further investigation of the trafficking of chlamydial MOMP and LPS antigens enveloped within the protective everted inclusion membrane vesicles within host cells involved density gradient centrifugation for the separation of epithelial secretory pathway components followed by SDS-PAGE and Western blot to determine whether the chlamydial antigen-containing vesicles could fuse with and deliver the antigens to host cell organelles. Coupled with immuno-TEM, these data confirmed the presence of major chlamydial antigens within the endoplasmic reticulum of infected host cells. Additionally, chlamydial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) was co-localized with CD1d, a lipid antigen-presenting molecule. Collectively, these studies (i) establish a novel escape mechanism for chlamydial antigens, (ii) identify cHsp60-2 as a marker of iron stress response in C. trachomatis, and (iii) define for the first time the host cell ER as a destination for selected chlamydial antigens during infection.

Carex establishment on reclaimed oil sands landscapes : a case study at Suncor Energy Inc.Marlowe, Patricia Ann 14 March 2011 (has links)
Reclaimed oil sands landscapes are perceived to be low in plant diversity compared with
naturally occurring plant communities. Approximately 66 Carex species inhabit the oil
sand region. This thesis is unique and represents the first large scale study of Carex
establishment on reclaimed oil sands landscapes. Research compared diversity and habitat
variables between natural ecosystems and reclaimed landscapes, and examined the
colonization mechanism for Carex establishment on reclaimed landscapes (i.e., ingress
from adjacent natural ecosystems or emergence from the soil seed bank). Low positive
associations between the presence of Carex in natural and reclaimed landscapes, and the
presence of species on reclaimed landscapes not accounted for in either the forest or edge
plots, suggests Carex established from the soil seed bank and less so from natural ingress.
Carex share the same seed dispersal mechanisms as many plants, so the implications may
apply to a broader range of plant species.

A content analysis of the pre-recall, recall, and post-recall coverage of the Ford Motor Co. and Bridgestone/Firestone, Inc. tire crisis in the Wall Street journal and the Washington postThompson, Nicole Elain January 2006 (has links)
To minimize devastation and maximize opportunities provided during a corporate crisis, public relations professionals should collaborate with lawyers on crisis response strategies. The purpose of this study was to examine coverage of the Ford Motor Co. and Bridgestone/ Firestone, Inc. tire recall from May 2000 through May 2001 to determine whether there was a difference between the strategies used by each company and whether Ford Motor Co. and Bridgestone/Firestone, Inc. used more traditional public relations than traditional legal strategies during each crisis stage.A content analysis was conducted of articles covering the crisis from The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post containing sentences attributed to each company's spokespeople. The search yielded 234 usable articles with 2,192 sentences.Coders identified strategies as traditional public relations, traditional legal, mixed, diversionary, or other. A chi-square was used to test the hypotheses. The first hypothesis, which said there would be no significant difference between strategies used by each company, was rejected. The second and third hypotheses, which said Ford Motor Co. and Bridgestone/Firestone, Inc. used significantly more traditional public relations than traditional legal strategies during each time period, were accepted. / Department of Journalism
