Nouri, Rawa, Dokaj, Ensar January 2012 (has links)
Title: Control over and inspections of the incoming flow of deliveries Background: Staples experiences difficulties to get their incoming flow of deliveries to deliver on time. This is because Staples has a poor control of its suppliers in the current situation. Another problem that Staples experience is that their inspection of the incoming flow is taking too long time. These problems can lead to unnecessary tied up capital, backlogs and rest orders. Staples would like to explore the possibility of improving the control and inspection of the incoming flow. Purpose: To identify the amount of late and early incoming flow of deliveries and describe how Staples could control them in order to receive more on-time deliveries. Moreover to describe how Staples could improve the inspection process in order to make the incoming flow of deliveries flow faster into storage. Methodology: The study is a case study in Staples central warehouse in Växjö, Sweden. Results: Suggestion has been made for how Staples could improve the control over the incoming flow of deliveries, and the inspections of the incoming flow of deliveries. The suggestions made are based on how Staples could control deliveries in advance in order to receive more on-time deliveries. Moreover specific requirements could be made towards the suppliers to improve the inspections in order to reduce the flow time into storage.

Optimization of Goods Incoming Process

Golovatova, Alona, Zhou, Jinshan January 2010 (has links)
Increasing interest to optimization of goods incoming process has paralleled the rise of product diversity and advanced warehouse management based on logistics support systems. Nowadays, companies are universally faced with the requirements to reengineer their business processes starting with goods incoming operation, aiming to significantly reduce total operating costs and quickly respond to ultimate consumer. Previous academic research has provided many alternatives to attain the expected results. Nevertheless, an enormous gap still exists between theoretical research and practical operations. The purpose of this paper is to bridge this gap from operation level. We introduced a theoretical framework which was organized around earlier studies, latest findings and established literatures associated with overview of goods incoming process, flows management, seven wastes, logistics support systems etc. Meanwhile, an online fashion retailer, Nelly.com goods incoming process has been mapped from goods receiving, packing and sorting, warehousing to data input. As a result, intermittent material flows and information flows has been realized. Later on, a sensitivity analysis was performed to observe all wastes in the process through precise timing of each detailed activity. As the weaknesses and opportunities have been identified within Nelly’s goods incoming process, some heuristic solutions were proposed in the paper.Generally, flows should be smoothed and accelerated, particularly material flows and information flows related with goods incoming process. The interruption and miscommunication should be avoided to streamline the whole operation. Whilst, we inferred that all wastes within every sub-process have to be aware of. Consequently, some techniques such as scheduled delivery, cross-docking, goods classification, improved logistics support systems were proposed to eliminate wastes. Further on, the prevailed business process reengineering should be conducted as the next step to reallocate some resources or operations.Lastly, we simulated an expected goods incoming process based on Nelly’s status quo and heuristic suggestions. And some future research issues have been presented at the end to extend the vision to relevant domains.

Exploring and Theorizing Velocity Flux in Agile Development

Dong, Wenfei January 2015 (has links)
We mainly study development velocity in agile teams in this dissertation. The concept of development velocity relates to the classical problem of time estimation in software development and software development planning. Building on previous literature as well as a case study, we explore and theorize the factors that cause ‘velocity flux’, i.e. fluctuations in development velocity through studying the relationship between development velocity and the rate of incoming customer feature requests. The aim of this study is to contribute to a better understanding of what causes velocity flux in agile development, and discusses the implications of the findings for research and practical implications for agile planning. As a result, we propose nine factors that cause velocity flux, and provide some strategies to overcome them in order to make a more effective sprint planning in agile teams.
