The simulations of fluid flows in complex geometries require the generation of body-fitted meshes which are difficult to create. The penalty method developed in this work is useful to simplify the mesh generation task. The governing equations of fluid flow are discretized using a finite volume method on an unfitted mesh. The immersed boundary conditions are taken into account through a penalty term added to the governing equations. We are interested in the approximation of the penalty term using a finite volume discretization with collocated and staggered grid. The penalty method is second-order spatial accurate for Poisson and Navier-Stokes equations. Finally, simulations of turbulent flows around a cylinder at Re=3900 and turbulent motions in a rod bundle at Re=9500 are performed.

[pt] ANÁLISE DE ESTABILIDADE DE ESCOAMENTOS VISCOSOS E VISCOELÁSTICOS / [en] LINEAR STABILITY ANALYSIS OF VISCOUS AND VISCOELASTIC FLOWSJULIANA VIANNA VALERIO 04 June 2007 (has links)
uniforme.
e alguns autovalores
se encontram no infinito. No escoamento com líquidos
viscoelásticos
parte do espectro é contínuo, aumentando o grau de
dificuldade da análise
numérica para encontrá-lo. Nesse trabalho, vamos
apresentar um método
baseado em transformações lineares tirando vantagem das
estruturas matriciais
computacional. A
autovetores do problema
transformado e do original é apresentada. / [en] Steady state,two-dimensional flows may become unstable
under two and
three-dimensional disturbances, if the flow parameters
exceed some critical
values. In many practical situations, determining the
parameters at
which the flow becomes unstable is essential. The complete
understanding
of viscous and viscoelastic flows requires not only the
steady state solution
of the governing equations, but also its sensitivity to
small perturbations.
Linear stability analysis leads to a generalized
eigenvalue problem, GEVP.
Solving the GEVP is challenging, even for Newtonian
liquids, because the
incompressibility constraint creates singularities that
lead to nonphysical
eigenvalues at infinity. For viscoelastic flows, the
difficulties are even higher
because of the continuous spectrum of eigenmodes
associated with differential
constitutive equations. The complexity and high
computational cost
of solving the GEVP have probably discouraged the use of
linear stability
analysis of incompressible flows as a general engineering
tool for design and
optimization. The Couette flow of UCM liquids has been
used as a classical
problem to address some of the important issues related to
stability analysis
of viscoelastic flows. The spectrum consists of two
discrete eigenvalues
and a continuous segment of eigenvalues with real part
equal to -1/We (We
is the Weissenberg number). Most of the numerical
approximation of the
spectrum of viscoelastic Couette flow presented in the
literature were obtained
using spectral expansions. The eigenvalues close to the
continuous
part of the spectrum show very slow convergence. In this
work, the linear
stability of Couette flow of a Newtonian and UCM liquids
were studied
using finite element method, which makes it easier to
extend the analysis
to complex flows. A new procedure to eliminate the
eigenvalues at infinity
from the GEVP that come from differential equations is
also proposed.
The procedure takes advantage of the structure of the
matrices involved
and avoids the computational effort of common mapping
techniques. With
the proposed procedure, the GEVP is transformed into a
smaller simple
EVP, making the computations more effcient. Reducing the
computational
memory and time. The relation between the eigenvector from
the original
problem and the reduced one is also presented.

Interação fluido-estrutura com escoamentos incompressíveis utilizando o método dos elementos finitos / Incompressible fluid-structure interaction using the finite element methodFernandes, Jeferson Wilian Dossa 01 March 2016 (has links)
Interaction between fluids and structures characterizes a nonlinear multi-physics problem presente in a wide range of engineering fields. This works presets the development of computational tools based on finite element method (FEM) for fluid-structure interaction (FSI) analysis considering low speed flows (incompressible), as a great part of the engineering problems. Given the topic multidisciplinary nature, it is necessary to study three different subjects: the computational structural dynamics, the computational fluid mechanics and the coupling problem. Regarding structural mechanics, we seek to employ a finite element adequate to FSI simulation, what clearly demands a geometric nonlinear analysis. We chose to employ shell elements with formulation in terms of positions, which avoids problems related to finite rotations approximations. Concerning computational fluid dynamics, we employ a stable method, at same time sensible o structural movements, which is written in the arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) description. The flow incompressibility demands, for a stable method, the use of elements according to the Ladyzhenskaya-Bbuska-Brezzi (LBB) condition. It is also necessary to employ methods able to neutralize the spurious variations that appears from convection dominated flows when applying the standard Galerking method. In order to overcome this problem, we apply the Streamline-Upwind/Petrov-Galerkin (SUPG) method, which adds artificial diffusivity to the streamline direction, controlling spurious variations. Considering the fluid-shell coupling, we seek modularity and versatility, adopting the partitioned model. The developed coupling model ensure the use of fluid and structure meshes with no need for matching nodes.

A piecewise polynomial upwind scheme for problems in fluid mechanicsSartori, Patrícia 20 April 2011 (has links)
Os resultados numéricos são comparados com dados experimentais, numéricos e analíticos / This work is dedicated to the development, analysis and implementation of a new high-resolution upwind scheme (called PFDPUS) for approximation of convective terms in conservation laws and related fluid mechanics problems. By using the normalized variables of Leonard, the PFDPUS scheme is based on a piecewise polynomical function that satisfies the CBC and TVD stability criteria. The performance of the PFDPUS scheme is assessed by solving advection of scalars, Burgers, Euler and MHD equations. Then the new scheme is applied to simulate incompressible flows involving moving free surfaces. The PFDPUS scheme is implemented into the CLAWPACK software for compressible problems, and in the Freeflow code for incompressible problems. The numerical results are compared with experimental, numerical and analytical data

Kinetic Theory Based Numerical Schemes for Incompressible FlowsRuhi, Ankit January 2016 (has links) (PDF)
Turbulence is an open and challenging problem for mathematical approaches, physical modeling and numerical simulations. Numerical solutions contribute significantly to the understand of the nature and effects of turbulence. The focus of this thesis is the development of appropriate numerical methods for the computer simulation of turbulent flows. Many of the existing approaches to turbulence utilize analogies from kinetic theory. Degond & Lemou (J. Math. Fluid Mech., 4, 257-284, 2002) derived a k-✏ type turbulence model completely from kinetic theoretic framework. In the first part of this thesis, a numerical method is developed for the computer simulation based on this model. The Boltzmann equation used in the model has an isotropic, relaxation collision operator. The relaxation time in the collision operator depends on the microscopic turbulent energy, making it difficult to construct an efficient numerical scheme. In order to achieve the desired numerical efficiency, an appropriate change of frame is applied. This introduces a stiff relaxation source term in the equations and the concept of asymptotic preserving schemes is then applied to tackle the stiffness. Some simple numerical tests are introduced to validate the new scheme. In the second part of this thesis, alternative approaches are sought for more efficient numerical techniques. The Lattice Boltzmann Relaxation Scheme (LBRS) is a novel method developed recently by Rohan Deshmukh and S.V. Raghuram Rao for simulating compressible flows. Two different approaches for the construction of implicit sub grid scale -like models as Implicit Large Eddy Simulation (ILES) methods, based on LBRS, are proposed and are tested for Burgers turbulence, or Burgulence. The test cases are solved over a largely varying Reynolds number, demonstrating the efficiency of this new ILES-LBRS approach. In the third part of the thesis, as an approach towards the extension of ILES-LBRS to incompressible flows, an artificial compressibility
model of LBRS is proposed. The modified framework, LBRS-ACM is then tested for standard viscous incompressible flow test cases.
