Becoming an Entrepreneur : An Examination of the Needs of Young EntrepreneursUnnsteinsdottir, Saeunn January 2015 (has links)
This study’s main purpose is to explore what young individuals need/require when becoming entrepreneurs. To do that, the views and perspectives of students, senior entrepreneurs and incubators were analyzed. This study’s main contribution is to the knowledge and understanding of entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial education. Furthermore, this study has a practical application in the form of a suggestion on how to improve this study’s empirical case: a new project designed by the pre-incubator office Drivhuset Uppsala. Methodologically, a qualitative research study with interviews as its main technique indicates this study’s main findings and conclusions. What young individuals need/require in order to become entrepreneurs is; putting the theories they are learning or have learned into action, learning through entrepreneurship in the form of learning-by-doing and feeling the support in creating values from the entrepreneurial environment; called ‘the entrepreneurial ecosystem’ by one of this study’s actors. Theories indicate the importance of incubators participating in entrepreneurial education in different forms. UU incubators are, by the actors of this study, not perceived to do that. These conclusions proved to be complicated and are recommended as important topics for further research. This study focuses on Uppsala and incubators connected to UU. The empirical material was analyzed with the Venture Creation in learning-by- doing and Effectuation theories, and the findings indicate that Drivhuset Uppsala should focus on venture creation programs in designing their new project.

A critical analysis of worldview and culture in business incubation narrativesPlesha, Suzanne G. January 2005 (has links)
This study explored the possible connection between organizational culture and worldview and the narratives professional associations use to sell these perspectives to external audiences. Burke's pentad and ratio analysis were utilized to identify the dominant terms in nineteen narratives featured in a promotional booklet published by the National Business Incubation Association. In eleven of the stories, the "agent" elements were most prevalent in these stories, signaling an idealistic worldview. The remaining eight narratives were agency-dominant and provided an underlying pragmatism to the highly idealistic outlook of the agent-focused stories. In addition to providing a philosophical label for the narrative messages, analyzing the pentad elements gave clues as to this association's value system toward incubation clients and the business incubation industry in general. The implications of this professional association's influence on an emerging industry were also discussed. / Department of Communication Studies

The entrepreneurship has been widely promoted in the world and is no different in Brazil. The university are increasingly informed about the possibilities of opening your own business. They are launched into projects, in most cases technology-based, involving innovation and incubation. To the Incubators apply to ensure that after the companies fulfill their internship fase, it are able to compete and stay on the market. It is part of the profile of the entrepreneur both technical and behavioral characteristics, eg, leadership trainer and agent networks facilitator. It is urgent that entrepreneurs and incubators give special attention to the formation of networks, since there is research linking business continuity and mortality to relationships factors. This study consists of three steps. The first step, aims to verify in the processes of selection and incubation, under the viewpoint of the manager incubated company, the importance attached by the incubator (real) and by the manager (ideally) a set of criteria and practices listed by the researcher. It is a descriptive study, quantitative, conducted through a email survey. The research involved in this step thirteen incubators in the states of SC, PR, RS, and seventy-two incubated companies. The results of this step show that when the managers of the incubated company think of the importance that the incubators and themselfes attributed to the selection criteria and to the practices of incubation, both list that the most important selection criteria and incubation practices are technical. The second step, is a longitudinal multicase study. Five incubated companies was selected at different stages of incubation in Softville. On three different moments, at an interval of twelve months, sociometric questionnaires were administered to the members of companies, whose goal was the development and monitoring of indicators (size, cohesion, density and diversity) of four networks: trust, information I (technical), information II (management) and information III (other companies). In addition, at each moment of sociometric questionnaires application, were also collected data about the company development (team size, number of customers and revenue). The third step of the study compared the networks indicators with the performance indicators, seeking to associate better performance with better network indicators. The results of the third step suggest that the Softville incubated companies with more cohesive and diverse networks have better performance. Overall the research suggests that criteria for selecting projects for incubation and practical support to incubated companies should focus on network formation, since this practice contributes positively to the improved performance of companies.

Submitted by Marcelo Teixeira (mvteixeira@ucs.br) on 2014-05-19T18:16:21Z

In the last decades solidarity economy is growing as an alternative way of work and wealth generation, especially for those who are excluded from the formal market. The solidarity economy highlights itself as a movement that has its principles based on values, such as cooperation, participative democracy and self-administration looking forward to the individual, community and environmental well being. To the development of solidarity economy diverse agents become involved. In 1988 was create PRONINC ¿ National program of popular cooperatives and incubators, that created the idea that universities could create spaces/projects with a team of professors and students with the intention to spread solidarity economy. The process of advisement given by the incubators to the workers groups is fundamental, because trough this advisement is that the groups can get tools to organize its work and improve their capacity and interest in the solidarity economy. This work is a qualitative research in the five main universities in the state of Paraná located in the cities of Londrina, Maringá, Foz do Iguaçu, Curitiba and Ponta Grossa, with the objective to analyze the work of the solidarity work incubators of those universities. Through interviews with the coordinators of the incubators, pro-rectors of extension, technicians, SENAES development agents and the workers involved this research started to realize what is the vision of the State, Universities and the others involved of this kind of work. This work also discovered what were the main characteristics, difficulties and the identitary significations related to the work of the incubators. The reports show the difficulties, antagonism and common objectives that demark and theme that is still in construction. The incubators points the structural and political problems that pervades this kind of project, the bureaucracy that prevents a better mobility and a better treatment and that solidarity economy and the incubators still need more clarity with the invloveds with its work relations. This work concludes that the incubators are spaces for the discussion, with multiple visions, negotiations and collective practices. The knowledge of the relation between incubators and the main involveds its fundamental to consolidate this proposal / Doutorado / Politicas, Administração e Sistemas Educacionais / Doutora em Educação

Antecedents of business incubator effectiveness: an exploratory studyLish, Alan David 22 May 2012 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to develop a conceptual model based which examines the influence of various antecedents of the business incubation process. The conceptualized model will be tested empirically using data collected from North American business incubators.
The data used are from the National Business Incubator Association's State of the Industry survey. The Partial Least Squares method of analysis is used to explore the identified antecedents, and is used to test validate the model.
While a number of resources were identified as components of the incubation process and are considered antecedents of incubator effectiveness (e.g., social networking, access to funding, training, manager/staff intervention), the findings indicate the network of professional services (e.g., legal, marketing, MIS advice) assembled in and around the incubator have the most significant impact on incubator effectiveness. Other resources, such as training, links and management resources, can have an impact, but only insofar as they relate to the professional services resources. The application and screening process were confirmed as essential to find clients that have the proper "fit" within an incubator. The findings indicate that the physical and age characteristics of an incubator are not factors in effectiveness, nor is the networking activities among incubator clients, lending support to a burgeoning class of virtual incubators, accelerators and innovation centers.
The results support resource-advantage theory as a foundation theory in the incubation process, and give researchers a basis for future work in this area. The study helps fill gaps in academic research on incubators, and confirms previously theorized work on the process of incubation.
In practice, incubator managers and stakeholders can use these results to assemble the particular resources they need for their type of incubator, and more effectively select potential clients based on those resources. This should allow a smoother, more even flow through the incubator, a better use of scarce and valuable resources, and likely higher graduation rates.
This study is the first empirical analysis of the incubation process to arrive at a statistically-validated model of business incubation.
