No entanto, os usuários possuem dificuldades no momento de realizar as buscas por assunto, pois os termos que utilizam não coincidem com os atribuídos na indexação. Essa problemática do catálogo de assunto, muita vezes, é o reflexo da falta de estudos de usuários e de uma política de indexação que oriente a indexação. Com o objetivo de contribuir para a elaboração de política de indexação em bibliotecas universitárias realizou-se o estudo diagnóstico do contexto sociocognitivo de usuários integrantes de grupos de pesquisa nas áreas de Ciências Biológicas, Exatas e Humanas da UNESP, para obter sua percepção com relação à indexação. However, users have difficulties when they do their search by subject, because the words they use do not coincide with the terms used by the librarian at the time of indexing. Consequently, the retrieval of information becomes silent and with noise. This issue of the catalogue of subject is often the reflection of a possible deficiency of the work done by librarians, since they do not study about users in order to know their interests and opinions concerning the treatment of the documents content. It is also a reflection of the lack of an indexing policy that guides the steps of indexing. Aiming to contribute to the development of an indexing policy in university libraries under the users' perspective, the proposal os this research was to do a study of the socio-cognitive context of users who are members of research groups in the areas of Biological and Exact Sciences and Humanities from UNESP, to get a diagnosis of their perception regarding the indexing context. Os Centros de Documentação possuem nomenclaturas variadas: Centro de Documentação, Centro de Referência, Centro de Memória, Núcleo de Documentação e outros. Nessa pesquisa, utilizaremos o termo Centro de Memória, numa tentativa de padronização, à luz de algumas pesquisas recentes. Ao nos referirmos a Centros de Memória institucionais, a heterogeneidade da informação acumulada é abundante. Trata-se de diversos suportes que são ou pretendem ser armazenados, tais como papéis, cartazes, mapas, objetos tridimensionais, livros, CDs e imagens, entre outros. Essa heterogeneidade nos trouxe a necessidade de um estudo e de uma reflexão teórica mais aprofundados, no que concerne ao tratamento da informação nas três áreas envolvidas pela nossa pesquisa ­ Arquivologia, Biblioteconomia e Museologia ­ sob a ótica da Organização e Representação do Conhecimento, no âmbito da Ciência da Informação. O levantamento trouxe uma perspectiva histórica das três áreas, estudadas verticalmente, trazendo pontos de intersecção e diferenciação entre elas. Uma vez que a representação de cada acervo é diferente, acarretando problemas em sua recuperação, propusemos a utilização das Linguagens Documentárias para compatibilizar o acesso à recuperação desses acervos. Assim, procuramos investigar e discutir a viabilidade de um novo modelo de vocabulários controlados que possa melhorar a qualidade do acesso à informação nos acervos de Centros de Memória e contribuir com os estudos sobre a linguagem no campo da Ciência da Informação. Essa construção deve ser pontuada por diretrizes específicas para a representação e recuperação da informação em Centros de Memória, como uma decisão administrativa estratégica para a padronização e otimização de serviços, e a racionalização da recuperação da informação. Estes procedimentos e diretrizes devem ser trabalhados e acordados na construção de uma Política de Indexação. Em suma, a pesquisa discute a necessidade atual do desenvolvimento de diretrizes que se utilizem das Linguagens Documentárias, para que sejam atendidas as especificidades de recuperação da informação em acervos de Centros de Memória ­ sobretudo, os que possuam informação registrada nos arranjos pertencentes à tríade: arquivo, biblioteca e museu. / The Documentation Centers have different nomenclatures: Documentation Center, Reference Center, Memory Center, Memorial Center, and others. In this research, we will use the term Memory Center in an attempt to standardization - in the light of some recent research done. When referring to institutional Memory Centers, our attention is drawn to the heterogeneity of the accumulated information. It is many document formats that are or intend to be stored, such as papers, posters, maps, three-dimensional objects, books, CDs and images, among others. This heterogeneity brought us the need for a study and a deeper theoretical reflection, regarding the processing of information in the three areas involved by our research - Archival, Library and Museum Studies - from the perspective of the Organization and Knowledge Representation, under Information Science. The survey brought a historical perspective of the three areas that were studied vertically, bringing points of intersection and differentiation between them. Since the representation of each collection is different, causing problems in their recoveries, we proposed the use of Documentary Languages to grant access to the recovery of these collections. Hence, we try to investigate and discuss the feasibility of a new controlled vocabularies model, which can improve the quality of access to information in memory centers of collections and contribute to the study of the language in the field of Information Science. This construction should be punctuated by specific guidelines for the representation and retrieval of information in memory centers as a strategic management decision for the standardization and optimization of services, and the rationalization of information retrieval. These procedures and guidelines should be worked out and agreed on building a Indexing Policy. In short, the study discusses the current need to develop guidelines that use the Documentary Languages, so the specifics of information retrieval are met in Memory Centers collections - especially those who have information recorded in the arrangements belonging to the triad Archival, Library and Museum.

Isto porque, sob o ponto de vista do sistema, a indexação é reconhecida com sua parte mais importante dentro dos procedimentos realizados para o tratamento da informação, pois condiciona os resultados das estratégias de busca. O indexador tem a função primordial de compreender o documento ao realizar uma análise conceitual que represente adequadamente seu conteúdo, de modo que ocorra correspondência entre o índice e o assunto pesquisado pelo usuário. Para isso, existem os manuais de indexação que devem refletir a política de indexação do sistema de informação e a realidade de trabalho do indexador. No entanto, devido à literatura escassa sobre política de indexação, procurou-se obter por meio da experiência do indexador mais subsídios sobre o tema. Nossos objetivos operacionais são: analisar o contexto do indexador e investigar seu conhecimento sobre política de indexação por meio da metodologia de leitura como evento social/protocolo verbal em grupo. Dessa maneira poderemos atingir nosso objetivo final que é tentar preencher uma lacuna teórica sobre política de indexação. Primeiramente, realizou-se uma primeira coleta de dados com três indexadoras de duas bibliotecas universitárias de Marília - SP das áreas de Medicina e Direito que não estão subordinadas à nenhum sistema de informação maior. That's because under the system viewpoint indexing is recognized as its most important part within the procedures carried on to treating information once it influences the results of searching strategies. The indexer has the primary function of understanding the document while carrying on a conceptual analysis that properly represents its contents so that correspondence occur between the index and the subject searched by users. For that, there are indexing manuals that must represent the information system indexing policy and the reality of the indexer work. However, due to scarce literature on indexing policy it was aimed to obtain more subsides on the subject through the indexer practical experience. Our operational objectives are: analyzing the indexer context and investigating his/her knowledge on indexing policy through the methodology of reading as a social event/verbal protocol in groups. Thus we can reach our final goal of trying to fill a theoretical gap on indexing policy. First, it was carried on a primary data collecting with three indexers in two university libraries in Marília - SP, that are not subordinate to any larger information system, on the areas of Medicine and Law. Um dos aspectos concernentes à política de indexação diz respeito à conversão retrospectiva de dados e à compatibilidade de linguagem de indexação entre integrantes de um mesmo sistema cooperativo. Com o advento das tecnologias, foi possível pensar em cooperação entre bibliotecas e, conseqüentemente, em catalogação cooperativa. Esse novo panorama da catalogação trouxe um grande avanço para área: agilização da catalogação, diminuindo o tempo de serviço e otimizando esse processo, uma vez que há o aproveitamento de registros bibliográficos copiados de outras bases de dados. No entanto, houve outra conseqüência: o processo de identificação de assunto por meio da análise foi simplificado, reduzindo-o a uma simples operação de cópia , contemplando a forma do documento, e deixando de lado o conteúdo . Essa simplificação da prática nos remete a uma questão teórica e conceitual muito discutida, porém ainda não sedimentada, na área de Biblioteconomia: a conceituação de indexação e catalogação de assunto. A tese dessa pesquisa é considerar que as incoerências cometidas durante a indexação são resultados de desconhecimento da catalogação de forma e de conteúdo pelo bibliotecário, da ausência de política e manual de indexação para bibliotecas que serviriam como orientações ao trabalho do indexador e instrumento para sua formação em serviço, além de uma sistemática para identificação de conceitos. / Abstract: The indexing policy must be represented by means of a philosophy that reflects the system's aims. One of the aspects concerning the indexing policy is relating to the data retrospective conversion and the compatibility of indexing language among members of a same cooperative system. The appearing of the technologies made it possible to think of cooperation among libraries and, consequentely, of cooperative cataloguing. The new scene of the cataloguing brought a great advance to the field: agility of cataloguing, decreasing the time of service and optimizing this process, since it is possible the utilization of bibliographic records copied from other databases. Nevertheless, there were other consequence: the process of subject's cataloguing (indexing) was simplified reducing it to a simple operation of "copy", taking into account the document's "form", disregarding the "content". This practice simplification refers to a theoretical and high discussed conceptual matter, not yet well sedimented in Librarianship: the concept of indexing and subject cataloguing. The thesis of this research considers that the incoherences made during the indexing are results of non-discerment between descriptive cataloguing and subject cataloguing by the librarian, of the absence of policy and handbook of indexing for libraries which would be useful as guidelines to the indexer's work and instrument to his education in service, besides a systematics to identify concepts. We intend to present a theoretical methodological proposal for the working up of guidelines of indexing policy for the building of cooperative catalogs in university libraries, by means of the indexing process, from the socio-cognitive approach with librarians and users in the context of the university library, and in the conceptual perspective of the theoretical aspects that involve the indexing and the subject cataloguing. / Doutor

That's because under the system viewpoint indexing is recognized as its most important part within the procedures carried on to treating information once it influences the results of searching strategies. The indexer has the primary function of understanding the document while carrying on a conceptual analysis that properly represents its contents so that correspondence occur between the index and the subject searched by users. For that, there are indexing manuals that must represent the information system indexing policy and the reality of the indexer work. However, due to scarce literature on indexing policy it was aimed to obtain more subsides on the subject through the indexer practical experience. Our operational objectives are: analyzing the indexer context and investigating his/her knowledge on indexing policy through the methodology of reading as a social event/verbal protocol in groups. Thus we can reach our final goal of trying to fill a theoretical gap on indexing policy. First, it was carried on a primary data collecting with three indexers in two university libraries in Marília - SP, that are not subordinate to any larger information system, on the areas of Medicine and Law. That collecting had as goals verifying the methodology applicability towards the ends of this thesis and serve as a model in relation to the way of method application and carrying on during data collecting. Um dos aspectos concernentes à política de indexação diz respeito à conversão retrospectiva de dados e à compatibilidade de linguagem de indexação entre integrantes de um mesmo sistema cooperativo. Com o advento das tecnologias, foi possível pensar em cooperação entre bibliotecas e, conseqüentemente, em catalogação cooperativa. Esse novo panorama da catalogação trouxe um grande avanço para área: agilização da catalogação, diminuindo o tempo de serviço e otimizando esse processo, uma vez que há o aproveitamento de registros bibliográficos copiados de outras bases de dados. No entanto, houve outra conseqüência: o processo de identificação de assunto por meio da análise foi simplificado, reduzindo-o a uma simples operação de cópia , contemplando a forma do documento, e deixando de lado o conteúdo . Essa simplificação da prática nos remete a uma questão teórica e conceitual muito discutida, porém ainda não sedimentada, na área de Biblioteconomia: a conceituação de indexação e catalogação de assunto. A tese dessa pesquisa é considerar que as incoerências cometidas durante a indexação são resultados de desconhecimento da catalogação de forma e de conteúdo pelo bibliotecário, da ausência de política e manual de indexação para bibliotecas que serviriam como orientações ao trabalho do indexador e instrumento para sua formação em serviço, além de uma sistemática para identificação de conceitos. / The indexing policy must be represented by means of a philosophy that reflects the system's aims. One of the aspects concerning the indexing policy is relating to the data retrospective conversion and the compatibility of indexing language among members of a same cooperative system. The appearing of the technologies made it possible to think of cooperation among libraries and, consequentely, of cooperative cataloguing. The new scene of the cataloguing brought a great advance to the field: agility of cataloguing, decreasing the time of service and optimizing this process, since it is possible the utilization of bibliographic records copied from other databases. Nevertheless, there were other consequence: the process of subject's cataloguing (indexing) was simplified reducing it to a simple operation of copy, taking into account the document's form, disregarding the content. This practice simplification refers to a theoretical and high discussed conceptual matter, not yet well sedimented in Librarianship: the concept of indexing and subject cataloguing. The thesis of this research considers that the incoherences made during the indexing are results of non-discerment between descriptive cataloguing and subject cataloguing by the librarian, of the absence of policy and handbook of indexing for libraries which would be useful as guidelines to the indexer's work and instrument to his education in service, besides a systematics to identify concepts. We intend to present a theoretical methodological proposal for the working up of guidelines of indexing policy for the building of cooperative catalogs in university libraries, by means of the indexing process, from the socio-cognitive approach with librarians and users in the context of the university library, and in the conceptual perspective of the theoretical aspects that involve the indexing and the subject cataloguing.

Os Centros de Documentação possuem nomenclaturas variadas: Centro de Documentação, Centro de Referência, Centro de Memória, Núcleo de Documentação e outros. Nessa pesquisa, utilizaremos o termo Centro de Memória, numa tentativa de padronização, à luz de algumas pesquisas recentes. Ao nos referirmos a Centros de Memória institucionais, a heterogeneidade da informação acumulada é abundante. Trata-se de diversos suportes que são ou pretendem ser armazenados, tais como papéis, cartazes, mapas, objetos tridimensionais, livros, CDs e imagens, entre outros. Essa heterogeneidade nos trouxe a necessidade de um estudo e de uma reflexão teórica mais aprofundados, no que concerne ao tratamento da informação nas três áreas envolvidas pela nossa pesquisa ­ Arquivologia, Biblioteconomia e Museologia ­ sob a ótica da Organização e Representação do Conhecimento, no âmbito da Ciência da Informação. O levantamento trouxe uma perspectiva histórica das três áreas, estudadas verticalmente, trazendo pontos de intersecção e diferenciação entre elas. Uma vez que a representação de cada acervo é diferente, acarretando problemas em sua recuperação, propusemos a utilização das Linguagens Documentárias para compatibilizar o acesso à recuperação desses acervos. Assim, procuramos investigar e discutir a viabilidade de um novo modelo de vocabulários controlados que possa melhorar a qualidade do acesso à informação nos acervos de Centros de Memória e contribuir com os estudos sobre a linguagem no campo da Ciência da Informação. Essa construção deve ser pontuada por diretrizes específicas para a representação e recuperação da informação em Centros de Memória, como uma decisão administrativa estratégica para a padronização e otimização de serviços, e a racionalização da recuperação da informação. Estes procedimentos e diretrizes devem ser trabalhados e acordados na construção de uma Política de Indexação. Em suma, a pesquisa discute a necessidade atual do desenvolvimento de diretrizes que se utilizem das Linguagens Documentárias, para que sejam atendidas as especificidades de recuperação da informação em acervos de Centros de Memória ­ sobretudo, os que possuam informação registrada nos arranjos pertencentes à tríade: arquivo, biblioteca e museu. / The Documentation Centers have different nomenclatures: Documentation Center, Reference Center, Memory Center, Memorial Center, and others. In this research, we will use the term Memory Center in an attempt to standardization - in the light of some recent research done. When referring to institutional Memory Centers, our attention is drawn to the heterogeneity of the accumulated information. It is many document formats that are or intend to be stored, such as papers, posters, maps, three-dimensional objects, books, CDs and images, among others. This heterogeneity brought us the need for a study and a deeper theoretical reflection, regarding the processing of information in the three areas involved by our research - Archival, Library and Museum Studies - from the perspective of the Organization and Knowledge Representation, under Information Science. The survey brought a historical perspective of the three areas that were studied vertically, bringing points of intersection and differentiation between them. Since the representation of each collection is different, causing problems in their recoveries, we proposed the use of Documentary Languages to grant access to the recovery of these collections. Hence, we try to investigate and discuss the feasibility of a new controlled vocabularies model, which can improve the quality of access to information in memory centers of collections and contribute to the study of the language in the field of Information Science. This construction should be punctuated by specific guidelines for the representation and retrieval of information in memory centers as a strategic management decision for the standardization and optimization of services, and the rationalization of information retrieval. These procedures and guidelines should be worked out and agreed on building a Indexing Policy. In short, the study discusses the current need to develop guidelines that use the Documentary Languages, so the specifics of information retrieval are met in Memory Centers collections - especially those who have information recorded in the arrangements belonging to the triad Archival, Library and Museum.
