In India, it’s their Way or the Highway : - A case study on what cultural differences Swedish SMEs perceive on the Indian market and how they manage them.

Klint, Martin, Rigsjö, Linus January 2015 (has links)
Emerging markets are countries with rapid economic growth and have been on the global agenda over the last decades. The most prominent of these markets are the BRIC countries where India is included. India is one of the largest emerging markets in the world with large annual economic growth and great opportunities for firms doing business in it. However, it has proven to be complicated for Westerns firms operating in the country, which stems from its cultural differences towards the West but also the cultural diversity within the country. Differences also exist between India and the West in a business context, where Indians highlight the importance of personal relationships before engaging in contracts, unlike for example Swedes that do the opposite. The purpose of this study is to investigate what cultural differences Swedish small and medium sized enterprises perceive while doing business in India, and what standardization or adaptation strategies they use to manage these differences. Empirical findings have been retrieved from interviews with key personnel in three firms located in Småland, in Southeast Sweden, which are established or have tried to establish business in India. The literature review contains three main concepts; Doing business in emerging markets, Standardization vs. adaptation and Cultural elements that are all connected to India and how SMEs should approach this market. These three concepts are later illustrated in a conceptual framework, which is based on the research questions. The result shows that Swedish SMEs perceive Indian culture as very hierarchical in both society and organizations. The aspect of time is not highly regarded, where payment and delivery delays are frequent. Indians rely extensively on personal relationships and try to avoid uncertainties in business communication. Findings also show that friendship and personal bonds are initial aspects when negotiating a potential contract. It is also essential for Swedish SMEs to adapt some business activities when in India, although certain standardization methods should be used in order to thrive on the Indian market.

Pacavar, Emina January 2018 (has links)
This research will study cultural appropriation that is presentable in 2010th music videos by famous artists/bands like Coldplay, Beyoncé, Lana Del Rey, No Doubt and Iggy Azalea. The term cultural appropriation is about the taking over of practices, artistic forms or themes from usually a minority culture. The focus will lay on two different cultures, Indian culture and Native American culture. I will with the help of researchers like Erich Hatala Matthes and James. O Young argue the harms of cultural appropriation, where I will include bell hooks to supports my arguments. My task will also be to enlighten the common behavior traits that show occurring cultural appropriation in music videos. Deeply analysis of these music videos will help me reach my concluded arguments about the harms of cultural appropriation. Every music video will focus on three concepts and they are, romanticization, sexualization and exotification. With tracing these concepts, I will argue the differences of the cultural appropriation Indian culture and Native American culture experiences.

Inter-cultural problems of IT-services outsourcing from Sweden to India

Gul, Ahtsham, Zaib, Amir January 2010 (has links)
IT-services outsourcing from Sweden to India has increased in the last few years and it is often regarded as a strategic measure to handle the increasing costs of IT-related development and maintenance operations. There are a number of advantages of outsourcing however, there are many challenges that outsourcing initiatives face. One of the challenges mentioned by many researchers is the cultural differences between the Swedish culture and the Indian culture. At the same time there is not enough research done about these cultural differences in the context of IT-services outsourcing from Sweden to India. It creates difficulties for the partners involved in an IT services outsourcing initiative to achieve the desired results. In this work we have researched these problems by sending questionnaire to IT-outsourcing companies in Sweden. The questionnaire was prepared after a thorough literature review. The participants were asked if they are still facing the problems identified in the literature review and to also mention any other cultural problems faced by them. The questionnaires were analysed and the results obtained are presented in this work. The results show that the practitioners were still facing the problems. This thesis identifies the root causes, the negative effects and also suggests ways for handling the problems. This research will help the IT-services outsourcing practitioners to manage these problems for achieving better result.

“TOWARD ADIPOSITIVITY”: THE DEVELOPMENT OF FAT ACTIVISM IN INDIAN MASS COMMUNICATION FROM FILM TO PODCASTING

MITTAL, DIKSHA 01 August 2023 (has links) (PDF)
The phrase, “Toward Adipositivity” in my title is derived from an episode of the Indian fat-activist podcast, Fat.So? (2019-2022). Photographer Substantia Jones presents her fat-activist artwork, “The Adipositivity Project.” Her method involves photographing revealing, sometimes nude, pictures of fat women, and then posts them to the Internet. Jones’ goal is to reclaim the pejorative connotations associated with the word “fat,” to show that fat women’s bodies are beautiful and worthy of artistic inspiration. The arrival of fat activism in Bollywood cinema circa 2010 resulted from the 1991 neo-liberalization of India. The nation experienced a subsequent rise of feminism in civil society, and thus saw the importation of related identity political considerations from Western culture. Bollywood fat activism developed in response to almost two decades of imitating Hollywood featuring thin actresses as protagonists, while relegating fat actresses to insignificant and unattractive roles. In this dissertation, I apply Fat Studies to Bollywood and podcasting. My dissertation centers on two mass mediated sites: weight-based discrimination against women in the 2015 Bollywood film, Dum Laga ke Haisha, and the early fat-activist podcast, Fat.So?, which began in 2019. I conclude that podcasting is a more effective medium than Bollywood cinema for delivering a radical fat-activist message. The latter mass mediated form of communication represents a multiplicity of nuanced perspectives, across a wider array of the population. I employ intersectional theory to study the interaction of weight as an identity political variable with gender, class, and caste. Finally, I lay out the relationship between the fat-activist film and podcast and the recent rise of non-diet nutrition-based podcasting in India.
