Komparativní analýza politik regulace velkých zdrojů znečišťování ovzduší v Moravskoslezském kraji a Slezském vojvodství / Comparative analysis of the regulation policies of large sources of air pollution in the Moravia-Silesia and in the Silesian Voivodeship

Děcká, Michaela January 2012 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to perform comparative analysis of the state policies of the Czech Republic and Poland aimed at reducing dust emissions from industrial and power generation sources of air pollution in the Moravia-Silesia and in the Silesian Voivodeship. The analysis is meant to facilitate improving the regulation requirements of these sources in both districts. The extent of regulation of the sources of air pollution in the Silesia Voivodeship influences the amount of dust emissions produced by such sources and, due the influence of the existence of cross-border transfer of emissions, this influences the concentration of particulate matter in the atmosphere in the Moravian-Silesian Region. The thesis arrives at the conclusion that the industrial and power generation sources of air pollution in the Czech Republic in the Moravian-Silesian Region faces stricter regulation requirements in comparison with similar sources in Poland in the former Silesian Voivodeship. Stricter conditions of regulation for Czech sources are the reason for the lower level of emissions and the resulting higher control costs such sources. The thesis concerns comparative analysis of the control costs a sample group of metallurgic and power generation plants in the Moravian-Silesian Region and in the Silesian Voivodeship.

Approche intégrée pour une évaluation multicritère des meilleures techniques disponibles / Integrated approach for multicriteria assessment of Best Available Techniques

Evrard, Damien 22 September 2016 (has links)
In order to reduce chronic emissions due to industrial activities, the Industrial Emission Directive (IED − 2010/75/CE) defines, for the Member States, a legal framework and the concept of Best Available Technique (BAT). This concept of BAT and their associated environmental performance levels (BATAEPL) enables to set common objectives in Europe while considering local specificities. Moreover, the application of the concept of BAT to non-IED sectors (e.g. Nuclear installations) makes it a major issue for the entire European industrial community. BAT reference documents (called BREFs) have become essential to help to choose techniques and are references for environmental performance assessment of installations. The process of their revision can be improved because of the differences of interpretation that exist among involved actors for industrial information analysis. Thus, the contribution of this thesis is a methodology structured in 5 steps based, on the one hand, on multicriteria statistical tools (hierarchical clustering, PCA, Pareto front) to help to determine reference installations and applicable BATs thanks to representative or performant approaches and, on the other hand, to define associated environmental performance levels, at international and national scales. This methodology has demonstrated its applicability and integration into current decision processes thanks to applications to both geographical scales, and to IED and non-IED activities.

Techno-economic Assessment of Carbon Capture from Low Concentration Streams

Joshi, Prithvi Kiran January 2023 (has links)
Investments in carbon capture from industrial emissions have been on the rise in recent years, having reached over $200 million in 2021 as compared to 2015’s $13 million. The Paris Agreement, signed by 196 parties globally in 2015, is purported to be the primary driver for this, with its ambitious goal of limiting global surface temperature rise to 1.5°C by the year 2100 as compared to the pre-industrial era. Achievement of a carbon-neutral future for industries has been sought by experts in more than a few ways, which include attempts directed towards re-designing current manufacturing processes to produce inherently low CO2 emissions. Although eventual elimination of carbon emissions forms the ultimate goal, complete avoidance of CO2 production does not seem probable for all industrial sectors. Emissions from industries in the medium to long term are thus foreseen to be composed between 0.5% and 7% of CO2 by moles (roughly between 1% and 10% by mass), depending on the level of dilution occurring during the various flue gas treatment procedures between their source and the capture unit. An assessment of the capabilities of two popular and one prospective carbon capture technologies in capturing CO2 from such emissions of the future has been made in this work to aid investors make informed decisions about a suitable technology. The monoethanolamine-based (MEA) absorption system, one of the most popular choices today, was found to be well capable of treating emissions composed of CO2 in proportions as low as 0.6% by mole (or ∼1% by mass) with capture rates well over 95%. Its thermal energy intensity ranged between 3.59 MJth/kgCO2 captured and 10.23 MJth/kgCO2 captured with an associated levelised cost of capture ranging between €20.36/tonneCO2 captured and €141.97/tonneCO2 captured going from the 10% concentrated to the 1% concentrated stream by mass. In comparison, the benfield system was found to effect much lower CO2 capture rates ranging between 35% and 88%, making it unsuitable for treatment of low CO2 concentrated streams. Even with such poor performance at high pressures of operation, its energy demand ranged between 3.9 MJth/kgCO2 captured and 11.07 MJth/kgCO2 captured with an associated levelised cost of capture between €174.28/tonneCO2 captured and €4209.06/tonneCO2 captured. The immobilised amine-based system, in what is considered to be a non-optimised configuration yet, was found to capture nearly 100% of the entering CO2 with energy consumption ranging between 3.71MJth/kgCO2 captured and 11.8 MJth/kgCO2 captured for extremely high, but improvable levelised costs of capture ranging between €674.31/tonneCO2 captured and €3488.42/tonneCO2 captured. Exhibiting comparable energy performance to the mature MEA-based absorption system’s even in its non-optimised configuration, the immobilised amine-based adsorption system was found to possess potential to be the carbon capture technology of the future for treatment of low CO2-concentrated effluent streams.

Energy Analysis within Industrial Hydraulics and Correspondent Solar PV System Design

Absalyamova, Viktoriya January 2010 (has links)
Energy efficiency and renewable energy use are two main priorities leading to industrial sustainability nowadays according to European Steel Technology Platform (ESTP). Modernization efforts can be done by industries to improve energy consumptions of the production lines. These days, steel making industrial applications are energy and emission intensive. It was estimated that over the past years, energy consumption and corresponding CO2 generation has increased steadily reaching approximately 338.15 parts per million in august 2010 [1]. These kinds of facts and statistics have introduced a lot of room for improvement in energy efficiency for industrial applications through modernization and use of renewable energy sources such as solar Photovoltaic Systems (PV).The purpose of this thesis work is to make a preliminary design and simulation of the solar photovoltaic system which would attempt to cover the energy demand of the initial part of the pickling line hydraulic system at the SSAB steel plant. For this purpose, the energy consumptions of this hydraulic system would be studied and evaluated and a general analysis of the hydraulic and control components performance would be done which would yield a proper set of guidelines contributing towards future energy savings. The results of the energy efficiency analysis showed that the initial part of the pickling line hydraulic system worked with a low efficiency of 3.3%. Results of general analysis showed that hydraulic accumulators of 650 liter size should be used by the initial part pickling line system in combination with a one pump delivery of 100 l/min. Based on this, one PV system can deliver energy to an AC motor-pump set covering 17.6% of total energy and another PV system can supply a DC hydraulic pump substituting 26.7% of the demand. The first system used 290 m2 area of the roof and was sized as 40 kWp, the second used 109 m2 and was sized as 15.2 kWp. It was concluded that the reason for the low efficiency was the oversized design of the system. Incremental modernization efforts could help to improve the hydraulic system energy efficiency and make the design of the solar photovoltaic system realistically possible. Two types of PV systems where analyzed in the thesis work. A method was found calculating the load simulation sequence based on the energy efficiency studies to help in the PV system simulations. Hydraulic accumulators integrated into the pickling line worked as energy storage when being charged by the PV system as well.

Batisse, Emmanuelle 04 1900 (has links)
On a daily basis, populations are exposed to a complex mixture of air pollutants such as fine particulate matters, sulphur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide that have been associated with a range of health effects namely respiratory and cardiovascular effects. Emitting sources’ distribution, landscape characteristics (i.e. infrastructure, topography) and thus the complex mixture of air pollutants and populations’ exposure vary greatly in space and time. This thesis aimed to document social inequalities in exposure to industrial air emissions of pollutants and associations between daily exposure to these pollutants and cardiovascular mortality in vulnerable populations living near these sources. Thus, using an ecological design, we analyzed Pearson’s correlations between deprivation level (using four indicators) of 2,189 primary and secondary Quebec schools and their exposure to industrial emissions in a radius of 2.5 to 7.5 km. Our results suggest inequalities in exposure to industrial air emissions at school in children. These associations were not consistent among all four indicators of deprivation. Besides, using a case-crossover design, we evaluated the associations between exposure to industrial air pollutants using both emission exposure estimates and sensor levels and deaths from cardiovascular diseases in the elderly living near industrial sources (<7.5 km). We found no convincing evidence of association. Our results varied greatly which could be caused by the limits of our study related to estimating exposure. Further studies using improved exposure estimates are necessary to support our findings.

Emerging Exposure Issues in Inhalation Toxicology

Li Xia (15355489) 29 April 2023 (has links)

Inhalation is a primary route of environmental and occupational exposures. Inhalation toxicology studies have thoroughly demonstrated the efficacy and adverse effects of a large number of chemicals, metals, pharmaceuticals, and agrochemicals. With the rapid development of new technologies and emergence of prominent subpopulations, some emerging exposure issues have arisen. To better protect public health, it is necessary to address these numerous emerging issues related to inhalation toxicology including 1) exposures to complex and unknown chemical emissions generated as we resolve infrastructure needs, 2) real-world exposure scenarios such as nanoparticle (NP) mixtures that may induce unique toxicity, and 3) variations in toxicity responses that occur in vulnerable and prevalent subpopulations following exposures. We designed three aims 1) to characterize differential representative composite manufacturing emissions (CMEs) and toxicity assessment of inhalation exposure to CMEs, 2) to examine the contribution of variable iron and manganese NP components in welding fumes to pulmonary toxicity, and 3) to evaluate metabolic syndrome (MetS)-induced variations in NP-Biocorona (NP-BC) composition following inhalation and modulation of pulmonary toxicity. Overall, this proposal aimed to characterize the emerging and complex exposures occurring in the real world and elucidate the mechanisms of differential pulmonary toxicity and susceptibility associated with CMEs, different metal NP components in welding fumes, and underlying diseases such as MetS. The conclusions from this project can help to improve the application of water infrastructure repairing technology and the utilization of welding and understand the mechanism of susceptibility to NP exposure among individuals with underlying diseases. Furthermore, the findings from these evaluations have supported and improved worldwide regulation, which promotes a safer utilization of novel materials, newly developed medicines, and complex chemicals.
