Resource constrained Industrial IoT deviceWernersson, Henrik Wernersson, Atwa, Yassin January 2016 (has links)

Latency based device fingerprinting in a low-power industrial wireless sensor networkKruger, Carel Phillip January 2021 (has links)
Security is a key challenge for any IIoT network and more so for constrained IWSN deployments.
Novel methods are thus required to enhance security, taking into consideration the lossy and low power
nature of the IWSN. The use of ICMP packets is proposed as a method to generate fingerprinting
information for IWSN devices. The ICMP based method uses the round-trip time information in the
ICMP header as a fingerprinting metric. The results showed that the effect of the physical layer can be
averaged out of the measurement if enough samples are available. A linear relationship was found
between hop count and round-trip time for a static network which can be used in the design phase of the
IWSN network or alternatively as a method to fingerprint routing anomalies in real-time. The ICMP
method was able to differentiate between devices from different vendors, but unable to fingerprint
devices from the same vendor due to physical layer interference. The work shows that fingerprinting
in an IWSN using the ICMP method is possible if the timing delta under investigation is an order
of magnitude larger than the timing variation introduced by the physical layer while maintaining a
reasonable signal-to-noise ratio. / Dissertation (MEng (Computer Engineering))--University of Pretoria, 2021. / Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering / MEng (Computer Engineering) / Unrestricted

Preparing for the Unexpected : Guidelines for Industrial IoT Forensics ReadinessMolinaro, Paolo, Wagner, Raya January 2023 (has links)
The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) plays a critical role in modern industrial systems, contributing to increased efficiency, productivity, and innovation. However, its rapid evolution and the complexity of devices pose significant challenges to digital forensics readiness (DFR). This thesis aims to provide a set of guidelines forimplementing DFR within IIoT environments, addressing challenges such as datacollection and logging, device and data identification, verification, security, analysis, and reporting. The framework was developed through rigorous research processesand guided by expert interviews and a final survey, adhering to design science principles. Although the study’s outcomes are subject to some limitations, such as a smallnumber of experts for evaluation, the research contributes to a significant gap in theexisting literature by providing a robust, adaptable, and comprehensive guide to DFRin IIoT. Offering a foundation for future research to build upon, enhance DFR, andaddressing emerging IIoT technologies and scenarios.

A framework for implementation of real-time monitoring through IIoTRunesson, Lovisa, Törn, Amanda January 2022 (has links)
In the global and dynamic business environment of today, Industry 4.0 and the development of digital networking and real-time connection are pushing manufacturing companies to introduce new technologies into their manufacturing processes. IIoT is seen as a key element of Industry 4.0 that enable the virtualization of manufacturing processes that can ensure smooth operations across the supply chain through real-time information collection. While researchers and practitioners alike agree that there are potential advantages of implementing real-time monitoring through IIoT they also uphold that there are critical challenges for adoption. Research shows that few companies have developed the structured strategies necessary to attain a consistent competitive advantage while implementing IIoT into their manufacturing processes. A large reason contributing to this is that there is no established industry standard for how to ensure interoperability, i.e the ability of different computerized products or systems to connect and exchange information with one another. To bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge of IIoT and the practical challenges of its implementation in a manufacturing process, the purpose of the study is to present a framework of the potential challenges and enablers of implementing IIoT for real-time monitoring. To meet the purpose of this study a multiple case study was performed at Volvo Construction Equipment sites in different stages of IIoT implementation. As a result, four categories related to potential challengers and enablers of implementing IIoT for real-time monitoring were identified. These categories were: external environments, IT infrastructure, technology, and human factors. Four project phases of implementing an IIoT platform were also identified, which lays the foundation for the proposed framework. The framework provides a general understanding of how manufacturing companies can implement IIoT to achieve real-time monitoring in practice by highlighting potential challenges and enablers in each project phase. Contributing to current research, this thesis considers the holistic perspective of the research area, i.e a combination of both technical and social aspects, where the resulting framework provides guidance on how to implement IIoT for real-time monitoring. Future research may include confirmation of the framework in practice and performing a quantitative case study to achieve generalized results.

Digitalisering av intern hantering av kvalitetsavvikelser / Digitalization of internal management of quality deviationsLindh, Jesper, Forsberg, Albin January 2022 (has links)
This project targets a company that are operative within treatment and durability of paper in the packaging industry. At their facility, the production consists of applying plastic coating on the paper to make it more resistant to liquids, as the final product is intended as a container for liquid, e.g. milk. When paper rolls have a less common or more difficult error, there is an error handling procedure called ''questionable assessment''. This procedure consists of much manual handling which is ineffective, time consuming and inexplicit, which can lead to misunderstanding. To improve the error handling, an existing program that the company uses, will be further developed to manage error reports and to track earlier error reports. The purpose of the project is to simplify the process and minimize the workload for the staff. By automating how and where the information is stored as well as connecting it to a user-friendly interface, it will improve the procedure and minimize the work needed by the staff.

Manufatura avançada: a influência da estratégia da manufatura e da percepção de affordances / Smart manufacturing: the influence of manufacturing strategy and affordances perceptionVieira, Ricardo Caruso 16 October 2017 (has links)
Industry 4.0 has become a very common term in recent discussions about the industry. It was originated in the Industrie 4.0 German program, which aims to strengthen their national industrial park competitiveness using new information and communication technologies to the manufacturing. Similar initiatives were created in different countries, such as the American Industrial Internet of Things. The Banco Nacional de Desenvolvimento Econômico e Social (BNDES) andtheEmpresa Brasileira de Pesquisa e Inovação Industrial (EMBRAPII) are conducting in Braziltechnologyresearch incentive program, withthenameManufatura Avançada (Smart Manufacturing). In all these initiatives, concepts like integrated supply chains and Cyber-Physical Production Systems (CPPS), can be found with the same expectations of great improvements in productions flexibility, quality, and efficiency. The information systems management and operations management researchers say that the relationship between technology adoption and business impacts indirect and complex. The operations management literature shows that the adopted technologies have to be aligned with the competitive priorities and the company production model to generate the expected impact. Thereby generic system adoption recommendations are not possible, only taking account the company segment and its attended market. The application of technologies that have emerged outside the industrial environment and are not familiar with the technology teams of that environment is another important factor. If the utilization context of the technological artifact changes, their capabilities became different. The term affordance, in the technology sociology, is an agent action possibility when in when in contact with a given object. A technological tool can allow its users a range of different actions, depending on their goals and knowledge. A slide rule, for example, allows a series of mathematical operations to be performed by a user who knows their mechanisms, but has little use for users without prior knowledge of their operation. In the ManufaturaAvançada context, the technologies affordance perception, that shapes their applications, will require new knowledge, present in different departments today. Based on the affordance and operations strategy theories, this work applies a framework as a starting point for case studies conduction in five projects in three large Brazilian companies. In order to study the impact of different manufacturing strategies on technology adoption, were selected companies from different market segments that represent well the Brazilian industry: sugar and ethanol, electronics assembly, and beverages. The availability of extensive technological knowledge has been proven to be a central concern of managers seeking the implementation of Advanced Manufacturing projects. Its absence is often seen as a barrier to the adoption of features such as artificial intelligence systems. In the studied cases, some of the projects were only made possible by the formation of multidisciplinary teams capable of dealing with innovative combinations of information systems technologies and industrial or agricultural automation. This result is consistent with the theory of affordances where the user knowledge is central to the perception of the opportunities of adoption of new technologies. Companies with different strategic priorities decided to adopt systems with different characteristics, demonstrating that ManufaturaAvançadacan not be seen as a single and rigid set of approaches. Projects, in high pressure for cost reduction activities, have a great emphasis on vertical integration, while searching for greater flexibility leads to horizontal integration. New technologies have proved capable, or demonstrated to have affordances, not only to enable new features, but to provide features at significantly lower costs than their predecessors. Examples were observed where lower cost technologies allowed the expansion of partially implemented projects or the implementation of projects in areas with characteristics that made them previously financially infeasible Due to these results, the proposed framework underwent revision, including the adoption of new technologies due to costs and the formation of multidisciplinary teams. This new framework is presented as the final contribution of this work, which is expected to serve as the basis for future research on the subject.

Internet of Things and its Business ModelsEgel, Jill January 2019 (has links)
The Internet of Things (IoT) is the next phase in the evolution of the internet, where everyday objects are connected to the internet, and obtain the capacity to communicate with other devices and sense their environment. Especially the IIoT is one of the most talked about industrial business concepts since the recent years, companies try to focus on business models and operational efficiency. That is why this thesis focuses on researching the industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). There is already a lot of information about the common Internet of Things but still a gap in research in the business perspective, especially surrounding the concept of business models for the IIoT. The goal of this project is to investigate different kinds of business models, how they work and how feasible they are. The need to research possible business models for an IIoT framework, as traditional business models are relevant for this study, such as the Business Model Canvas which has been proposed by Alexander Osterwalder or the Business Model Navigator by Oliver Gassmann. But there is still a lack of literature covering the business models for the IIoT. Therefore, after researching the concept of IIoT from a business perspective, I identified some useful criteria and suitable business models. With a qualitative literature study, I was able to develop an IIoT business model framework, based on the dynamics and complexity of the IIoT concept, which incorporates business strategies and provides companies with a flexible approach. The business model framework can be used in any business which is working in the industrial context. To demonstrate how the business model framework works for the IIoT, I clarified how suitable business models can improve the current business model of the very prominent and successful company Tesla. The results show how the framework of IIoT business models can be used to increase profit and work efficiently as a company. The models can also be formed to only highlight single components of an already existing business model, as it offers great flexibility, which is highly valuable in the fast evolving and innovative IIoT phenomenon.

Industry 4.0 with a Lean perspective - Investigating IIoT platforms' possible influences on data driven LeanDe Vasconcelos Batalha, Alex, Parli, Andri Linard January 2017 (has links)
Purpose: To investigate possible connections between an Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) system, such as Predix, and data driven Lean practises. The aim is to examine if an IIoT platform can improve existing practises of Lean, and if so, which Lean tools are most likely influenced and how this is.Design/Methodology: The paper follows a phenomenon-based research approach. The methodology contains of a mix of primary and secondary data. The primary data was obtained through “almost unstructured” interviews with experts, while the secondary data comprises of a comprehensive review of existing literature. Moreover, a model was developed to investigate the connections between the concepts of IIoT and Lean.Findings: Findings derived from expert interviews at General Electric (GE) in Uppsala have led to the conclusion that Predix fulfils the necessary requirements to be considered an IIoT platform. However, the positive effects of the platform on the selected Lean tools could not be found. Only in one instance improved Predix the effectiveness of a Lean tool. Overall, data analytic efforts are performed and let to better in-process control. However, these efforts were independent from the Lean efforts carried out. There was no increase in data collection or analytics due to the Lean initiative and Predix is not utilised for data collection, storage, or analysis. It appears that the pharmaceutical industry is fairly slow in adapting new technologies. Firstly, the high regulatory requirements inherent within the pharmaceutical industry limit the application of cutting edge technology by demanding strict in-process control and process documentation. Secondly, the sheer size of GE itself slows down the adoption of new technology. Lastly, the pragmatic approach of the top management to align the digital strategies of the various industries and thereof resulting allocation of resources to other more technologically demanding businesses hinders the use of Predix at GE in Uppsala.

An evaluation of how edge computing is enabling the opportunities for Industry 4.0Svensson, Wictor January 2020 (has links)
Connecting factories to the internet and enable the possibilities for these to autonomously talk to each other is called the Industrial Internet of Things(IIoT) and is mentioned as Industry 4.0 in the terms of the industrial revolutions. The machines are collecting data through very many different sensors and need to share these values with each other and the cloud. This will make a large load to the cloud and the internet, and the latency will be large. To evaluate how the workload and the latency can be reduced and still get the same result as using the cloud, two different systems are implemented. One which uses cloud and one which using edge computing. Edge computing is when the processing of the data is decentralized to the edge of the network. This thesis aims to find out ”When is it more favorable to use an edge solution and when is it to prefer a cloud solution”. The first system is implemented with an edge platform, Crosser, the second system is implemented with a cloud platform, Azure. Both implementations are giving the same outputs but the differences is where the data is processed. The systems are measured in latency, bandwidth, and CPU usage. The result of the measurements shows that the Crosser system has less latency, using smaller bandwidth but is needing more computational power of the device which is on the edge of the network. The conclusion of the results is that it depends on the demands of the system. Is the demands that it should have low latency and not using much bandwidth Crosser is to prefer. But if a very heavy machine learning algorithm is going to be executed in the system and the latency and bandwidth size is not a problem then the Cloud Reference System is to prefer.
