An experiment in using content placed on the Internet as a vehicle for influencing public opinion

Schwab, Kari 06 1900 (has links)
Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited / In this thesis we explore the potential for using content placed on the Internet as a vehicle for influencing public opinion. We conducted an experiment with 110 subjects to test whether subtle changes in a headline for a news article, without changing the content of the article, can affect a user's perception of the news event reported in the article. These online news articles were assembled from a number of major news organizations. The subjects were divided into three groups, each of which was exposed to a different version of the headline: positively biased, negatively biased, and unchanged from the original headline. Afterwards the subjects completed a survey to indicate their views on the news events. We then analyzed this data to determine the cause-effect relationship between perception of the news event and the version of the headline. We found a detectable influence when using positively biased headlines to lessen the impact of negatively biased news stories, although the influence was not statistically significant. No evidence regarding the influence of negatively biased headlines on negatively biased news stories was discovered. This research was focused on detecting the potential influence of subtle changes and does not address the potential influence of less subtle changes. / Ensign, United States Navy

Balighi, Marzieh 07 January 2011 (has links)
It's a new one that comes in the form of a long confession made by a nameless narrator, a victim of nightmares and hallucinations. Written during a stay by this writer in France between 1926 and 1930,this work is overloaded with debt, reminiscences and allusions to many literary readings, philosophical, metaphysical, religious and psychoanalytic. It is a place of intersection of diverse influences, certainly, but also Oriental, especially the West. This careful interweaving makes The Blind Owl a hybrid, very developed at thecrossroads of East and West. To identify the singularity, we relied on an approachthat sought to disentangle the mythological references which are material, to identifythe fingerprints of Orientalist patterns that existed at the time, between the wars,France and in Europe, to identify the existence of aesthetic models and molds,Western imbricate therein, to analyze also the inspiration nihilistic, marked byWestern philosophy, and to study the character that gives it a surrealist originality most unusual in Iranian literature

The relationship between pastoral influence tactics, follower outcome levels, and types of congregational change

Feltner, Wesley Leon 11 December 2009 (has links)
This dissertation examines the relationship between the influence tactics used by senior pastors in Southern Baptist churches, follower outcome levels, and types of congregational change. The intent of this study is to understand the relationships between these three variables as they relate to pastoral leadership. In chapter 1, the researcher introduces the topic and exposes the lack of research in influence tactics in ministerial contexts. In addition, the researcher develops five research questions that drive the research process. In chapter 2, the researcher gives an overview of the precedent literature concerning the theological and theoretical foundation of the topic. In addition, the researcher defines the categorical variables as they relate to the research objectives. In chapter 3, the researcher outlines the methodological design that will be used to gather the data. Instrumentation, statistical analysis, and methodological design are detailed. In chapter 4, the researcher reports on the findings of the research. The researcher uses a variety of tables and charts in order to present the data. In addition, the statistical analysis is given concerning the findings of the quantitative methods. In chapter 5, the researcher summarizes the data and provides conclusions based upon the research findings. In addition, the researcher provides applications for pastoral leadership and gives suggestions for further research. The researcher surveyed 408 Southern Baptist pastors who at the time of this study were currently serving as the senior pastor in churches associated with the Southern Baptist Convention. The selected pastors participated in an online questionnaire developed by the researcher. Statistical analysis was performed on each of the select variables along with demographic information. The findings of this research contributed to the understanding of specific influence tactics of senior pastors, the affect of certain influence tactics on church members, and the relationship of these variables to types of congregational change. / This item is only available to students and faculty of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. L'évolution de la littérature socio-politique de l'Iran sous l'influence de la langue et de la littérature françaises (1900-1935) / The evolution of the socio-political literature of Iran under the influence of French language and literature (1900-1935)

Shamsi Bidrouni, Tahereh 23 February 2012 (has links)
The topic of my dissertation talks about the literal relations between France and Persia during the era of Qâjâr kingdom. This dissertation comprises three parts. The first part studies the political relations and their historical evaluation, particularly a the time of these political relations resuming at the time of Fath Ali Châh Qâjâr and the Napoléon Bonaparte. Later on, they developed under the influence of missionary schools, sending many students to France and the establishing of schools like Dar-l Fonun (Polytechnic) and Dar-ot Tardjomeh (school of translation) by the Iranians. The second part considers the general development of Persian literature under the influence of the European book's translation into Farsi. Tending towards greater simplicity of the prose literature, sociopolitical Persian literature was born around the second half of the nineteenth century by some writers under the names of : Maragheï, Abdorrahim Najjar Tabrizi, Ali Akbar Dehkhoda, Akhond Zadeh, Seyyed Achrafaddin Qazvini (Guilani), etc. The third part is devoted to Buddhist compilation Yeki o Yeki naboud (Once upon a time), written by Djamalzadeh who, influenced by both Persian classical literature as well as two European writers (Gobineau and Morier), opened a new chapter to the Al qésséh Persian millennium. This issue gave him further room to scrutinize socio-political themes and to cover questions being asked about the society. The dissertation is a contribution to the history of Iran, the history of literal relations with that of France, as well as the creative thoughts in terms of the reception of the foreign influence on the national literature in modern times

Likeability and Popularity as Sources of Influence within Primary School Friendships

Unknown Date (has links)
It is well documented that friends influence adaptive behaviors (Brechwald & Prinstein, 2011). However, it remains unclear how influence manifests itself. The current study investigated the role of likeability and popularity in determining the relative influence that a child exercises on his or her friend’s prosocial behavior and academic achievement in a sample of elementary schooled children (N=679). The results suggest that more liked friends have more influence over their less liked friends’ prosocial behavior and academic achievement. Both more- and less-popular friends influenced each other’s academic achievement. Residualized analyses, however, which take into account the shared overlap between likeability and popularity, suggest that the more-liked friend continued to influence the prosocial behavior and academic achievement of the less-liked friend, whereas more-popular children had no influence over their less-popular counterparts. / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (M.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2018. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

Impression management & self-presentation in sport : measurement, process & consequences

Payne, Simon Mark January 2011 (has links)
The aim of this programme of research was to build on existing knowledge of impression management and self-presentation in the sport context. Theoretical advancement was made with the integration of two well-established social psychological frameworks of impression management phenomena; Leary’s (1995) topography of dispositional self-presentational motives, and Leary and Kowalski’s (1990) Two-Component Model of Impression Management – including situational impression motivation and impression construction – are complimentary, and their combination reflects a trait x state approach to understanding interpersonal behaviour in sport contexts. Athletes are assessed by team-mates, coaches, selectors, and the audience at a frequent rate. If they are aware of this, it could be viewed as an opportunity for personal and social development, or a threat to their existent identities. In both cases, the athlete must ensure that their performance is not affected by such thoughts, otherwise they risk conveying a negative impression regardless of their self-presentational motives (Leary, 1992). The present thesis incorporates three novel studies that address a multitude of first and second generation research questions (cf. Zanna & Fazio, 1982). Key findings include, but are not limited to: athletes have a strong dispositional motive to attain intra- and interpersonal goals via their self-presentations; if their impression efficacy does not match their impression motivation they tend to appraise this as a challenge, not a threat, contrary to theoretical expectations; in a laboratory setting, heightened impression motivation is associated with improved performance rather than increased distractibility and performance decrements (as was anticipated); impression management is important in developing desired social identities within university sport subcultures; and impression management is implicated in positive and negative group dynamics. In achieving its aims, the present thesis developed a new measurement scale, devised a successful experimental manipulation of impression motivation, and employed stimulated recall interview methodology; all novel or challenging approaches in sport psychology.

Influência da escola sobre alunos e pais na mudança de comportamento relacionado à saúde / Influence of the school on students and parents in the change of behavior related to health

Sossai, Joao Alvecio 22 November 1984 (has links)
A nutrition education program was developed to assess in what extent a systematic intervention of the school over the students and their parents is more efficient in changing knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to health than action over the students only. Elementary school students of all grades of three public schools of São Paulo and their parents were used as subjects. The subjects, 403 students and 128 parents, were divided in to three groups: group l, in which students and parents participated in the program; group 2, in which only the students participated in the program; and group 3, in which neither the students nor their parents participated in the program. The content of the educational program emphasized food consumption patterns at breakfast and between meals, as well as food production at home. The program for the students was developed by the regular teacher in weekly lectures. The duration of the program varied from six lectures, for the first grades, to eleven lectures for the last grades. The parents received specially prepared written material. The results revealed some significant differences in knowledge between the groups but not in attitudes and practices; however, the results were not conclusive. Further analysis showed that there was no significant linkage between change in knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to nutrition and variables such as age and level of instruction of parentes, socioeconomic level of family, relationship between parents and their children, opinion of parents about school, level of instruction and age of students. The partial success of the program could be related to failures in its development as well as to problems regarding the validity of the evaluation instruments. This suggests e greater control of the intervening variables if or when similar programs are developed.
