Decoster, Sonia Rosa Arbues 26 August 2015 (has links)
The ability for an organization to succeed in innovation is directly related with its ability to encourage ideas and manage the knowledge. The tools based on the web enable interaction and collaboration, representing a very important role in the context of the process for innovation, and being fundamental to the support of collaboration across boundaries. The collaboration, in turn, is the capability that enables to explore the knowledge with the goal to direct it to innovation. The potential of the ICT tools to the collaboration is demonstrated through the usage of these tools by many firms in order to stress and support the collaborative innovation. For this reason, the objective of the present job was to analyze, by having technologies based on the web as facilitators, what were the dominant factors that drive the collaboration to the innovation and, from then onwards, propose a conceptual model. This study reveals the usage of mixed methods from the same empirical unit, a multinational organization MAHLE from the automotive sector. The use of information and communication technology by emerging commercial farmers in their development in the Western Cape, South Africa

Smidt, Hermanus Jacobus January 2018 (has links)
Magister Artium (Development Studies) - MA (DVS) / Although many researchers have shown ICT can enable development it remains a great challenge to understand the link between JCT4D projects and the development of emerging commercial agriculture. There is a need to realise the potential of information and communication technologies (ICT) for emerging commercial farmer development in order to achieve agriculture expansion and transformation in South Africa. This is important in order for them to partake in the knowledge economy visualised in the 2030 National development plan of South Africa and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals in 2030. However in South Africa, it is not yel established which spec(flc ICT are used, how they are used and the extent of deployment ((used in the emerging commercial agricultural sector. Few studies have focused on the faclors that influence the use of !CT in South Ajhcan emerging agriculture. This study investigates and attempts to understand the usage of ICT by emerging commercial farmers and the issues 1hat influence ICT use on the West Coast of the Western Cape Province in South Africa. The study investigates 1he different forms of JCT used, how they are being used, what they are used for, how important these technologies are as enablers of production, and the factors that affect their use. The study involved a survey response of 42 emerging commercial farmers and 46 of their farm employees in the Matzikama and Cederberg municipalities. A literature review draws from studies globally, regionally and in South Africa on how !CTs have penetrated and contributed to delivering development in emerging commercial agriculture. Although most emerging commercial farmers cannot afford to adopt !CT tools that are essential in their farming activities almost all who were interviewed acknowledged the importance of ICT to their businesses. However, among other ICT, mobile phones and television were found to be primarily used for social and entertainment reasons rather than for agricultural pwposes. The general findings showed that occupation on farm and JCT literacy influence the use of ICT by farm employees. On the other hand the gender, capacity of the farmer, off farm income and farm size influences the use of ICT by emerging commercial farmers. Our literature review established some examples ji'om the studies of other researchers and the efforts of multi-lateral institutions such as the FA 0 and ITU to illustrate how we can improve policy. 1 recommend that the South African government develop an e-agriculture strategy to monitor development and validation of good practices on the use of ICTs in agriculture and rural development. This strategy will examine emerging trends on the role of JCTs and the challenges faced in reaching scaled, sustainable informCIIion service models. This can increase the sustainability of emerging commercial agriculture to contribute to the improvement of the lives of the poor in rural areas. Finally I present research questions for future research.

ICT-supported collaborative decision processes in extreme events : a comparative study

Sugimoto, Yasushi January 2015 (has links)
Making decisions at the right time and in the right way is vital in dealing with extreme events. However, uncertainties and severe time constraints usually make the tasks hard and stressful. Since catastrophes are not frequent events in our lives, prior practice is essential to increasing preparedness. In accordance with its rapid development and extensive dissemination, information communication technology (ICT) has been recognised as an indispensable instrument, not only to assist onsite activities of professional emergency responders, but also to support collaborative actions of a wide-range of stakeholders for effective preparedness. This research intends to explore the feasibility of workshop-style decision-making exercises on the basis of scenarios of extreme events, and to examine the role of ICT in mediating the interactive processes during a workshop. A comparative approach between the UK and Japan was employed to find similarities and differences in the way of identifying major issues, proceeding to a discussion, and reaching a decision on which course of action to take. Interviews with Japanese and British experts, including researchers and practitioners, were conducted to develop realistic scenarios and to hear their opinions about the use of ICT in the crisis preparedness context. Experimental face-to-face (FTF) workshops and online workshops were respectively organised for Japanese and British research participants to examine the applicability of the scenario method under these two different methods of communication. Complementary online workshops were also conducted for Japanese and British practitioners to obtain practical feedback on the idea of scenario-based online workshops. The main finding of this study was that scenario-based exercises are beneficial regardless of the nationality or the methods of communication in decision problems in which individuals have no prior experience. The most noteworthy finding was that scenario-based online workshops are unlikely to be argumentative and results-oriented under certain conditions, such as complexity of issues and tasks, amount of time spent by participants, degree of facilitation and type of technology used. This finding indicates that online exercises require different strategies from FTF exercises. In theoretical aspects, this study provides a foundation for theory formation regarding scenario methods. In addition, this work contributes to further development of online communications based on the comparison with FTF communications. In practical terms, the examination of the scenario method and use of ICT offers methodological alternatives in order to implement more robust preparedness.

Exploring the Relationship Between Academic Technology Use, Non-Academic Technology Use, and Gross Domestic Product on the 2009 Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) Digital Reading Assessment

Ramberg, Zachary 14 January 2015 (has links)
Students' use of technology for the purpose of academic and leisure pursuits is ever increasing. Technology access, and its subsequent use for the many varied forms of digital reading, is particularly timely and relevant for high school aged students that will likely interact with digital reading for years to come. The relationship between academic technology use, non-academic technology use, and students' scores on the 2009 Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) supplemental Digital Reading Assessment (DRA) as they related to gross domestic product (GDP) were explored in this study. Research questions were answered using extant data collected from the DRA and Information Communication Technology (ICT) survey portions of the 2009 PISA. Results indicated that academic and non-academic technology use ICT survey items were moderately correlated, however the academic and non-academic survey items were only weakly correlated to the DRA score. Moreover, the non-academic mean score was significantly higher than the academic mean score survey items. Finally, a regression analysis showed that GDP accounted for 3.28% of the variance; the non-academic survey explained 0.27% of the variance, while the academic technology use survey items only accounted for .05% of variance in the DRA. The relationship between academic and non-academic technology use as well as countries' overall DRA and GDP is further explored in the discussion.

Mahmood, Ashrafullah Khalid January 2010 (has links)
Information security has significant role in Healthcare organizations. The Electronic Health Record (EHR) with patient’s information is considered as very sensitive in Healthcare organization. Sensitive information of patients in healthcare has to be managed such that it is safe and secure from unauthorized access. The high-level quality care to patients is possible if healthcare management system is able to provide right information in right time to right place. Availability and accessibility are significant aspects of information security, where applicable information needs to be available and accessible for user within the healthcare organization as well as across organizational borders. At the same time, it is essentials to protect the patient security from unauthorized access and maintain the appropriate level in health care regarding information security. The aim of this thesis is to explore current management of information security in terms of Electronic Health Records (EHR) and how these are protected from possible security threats and risks in healthcare, when the sensitive information has to be communicated among different actors in healthcare as well as across borders. The use of information and communication technologies by nurse educators for teaching and learning in edo state, Nigeria

Esewe, Roselynd Ejakhianghe January 2013 (has links)
Magister Curationis - MCur / Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) are for information storage, retrieval, display and transmission through electronic means in our day-to-day life. The use of technology in education has made both learners and educators to achieve new possibilities because life is made easy for them due to its inherent advantages which range from support of conventional classroom work, design, development of learning materials to accessing virtual libraries. Harnessing these benefits places a great deal of demand on nurse educators to improve the teaching-learning experience of learners. However, the major players, especially the nurse educators in Nigeria, have not been properly investigated to find out if they use technology in teaching, and if they do, what types they use. The study aimed to explore and describe the nurse educators‟ use of Information and Communication Technologies in teaching and learning in nursing schools in Edo State, Nigeria. It focused on the type of Information and Communication Technologies used by nurse educators, how they use them, and the challenges they face, if any, in the use of technologies with a view to suggesting ways of overcoming the identified challenges. An exploratory descriptive quantitative research design with the use of self-administered questionnaires was adopted. The population was all the 36 nurse educators in the three universities that offer the Bachelor in Nursing Science programmes in Edo State. Validity and reliability of the study questions were ensured and a pilot study was done to ensure internal consistency by measurement with the Cronbach‟s alpha consistency measure that yielded 0.85. Descriptive analysis was employed with the aid of frequencies, tables and graphs. Findings of the study indicate that the nurse educators use technology for teaching and learning. They all use the laptop 34(100%); desktop computer iii accounts for 33(97.1%). The respondents use these technologies in conjunction with word processing and spreadsheet for direct classroom teaching, preparation of lectures and students‟ results as well as classroom facilitation. Twenty-five (25) respondents (73.5%) use the mobile technologies such as cell phones and emails to send and receive messages from students. Thirty (30) respondents (88.2%) store information as well as browse the Internet. The use of these applications is quite high, unlike video transmission to receive recorded lectures from out-stations which amounted to 7(20.6%) and video conferencing to dialogue with nursing experts 6(17.6%). The CD ROMS are used for direct classroom teaching, storage of course materials and for rehearsal and revision purposes by less than 50% of the respondents each. The respondents identified erratic power supply, unstable connectivity and inadequate ICT facilities as some of the major challenges they encounter. In conclusion, the study recommends among other things that the various departmental and personal offices of the lecturers be equipped with modern technology facilities. The university management is urged to explore other alternative power supply like solar energy. Furthermore, all the role players are urged to play their part effectively to make ICT for teaching and learning beneficial and effective.

A Phenomenological Exploration of Engineers’ Experiences Using Communication Technologies in Telework

MacFarlane, Gabrielle January 2016 (has links)
Telecommuting is becoming an increasingly popular trend in the modern workforce. Among the growing number of teleworkers are engineers, a profession where communication is a necessity. This study employs a phenomenological research approach to understand and describe the ways in which information communication technology (ICT) affects teleworking engineers’ interpersonal communication in the workplace and perceptions of isolation in social and organizational contexts. Uses and gratifications theory and media richness theory were used to better understand teleworkers’ selection and use of ICT. The findings revealed six themes: emotional impact, workplace relationships, information communication technology in the workplace, the nature of telework, telework and connectivity, and the organizational role in telework. This study contributes to communication research by adding to the growing body of knowledge about the influence of telework on workplace communication and relationships from the perspective of a niche population, engineers.
