Bibliography: pages 202-207. / In traditional indigenous communities, rites of passage provide a binding and supportive function which facilitates the transition of young people from childhood to adulthood. However, in contemporary western society transition rites have largely been forgotten or neglected and this loss has resulted in a hunger for initiation which adolescents often attempt to satisfy by using means which are socially unacceptable. This study attempts to understand the mechanisms which lead adolescents into socially unacceptable behaviour by exploring the potential for using the notion of de-labelling as the basis of intercepting and transforming juvenile deviance. As such, rites of passage are explored from the perspectives of a range of social scientific theories in order to assess the value in these processes tor young people at risk in South Africa. The central findings of this study suggest that it is possible to reinstate rites of passage in the form of a de-labelling programme, but that there is a need to go beyond an isolated programme by providing more systemic containment of young people in the form of community support and mentoring.

Since the 1970s, dividends have not only become less common (Fama and French, 2001), they have become less sticky, too. Today, it is not uncommon for a firm to cease dividend payments within three years of initiation. I examine the differences between firms that continue to pay dividends for a long period of time after initiation and those that do not. Although investors do not distinguish between the two groups at the time of the dividend initiation announcement, the firms that pay over a long period of time experience superior operating performance in subsequent years. I construct a model that predicts, at the time of the initiation announcement, whether a firm is likely to pay dividends well into the future. My predictions also extend to performance; the firms that I predict to pay for a long period of time also outperform those whose payments I predict to be temporary. Thus, it appears that the relationship between dividend stickiness and long-run performance is not fully reflected in stock returns surrounding the announcements of dividend initiations. / Ph. D.

Cette thèse est consacrée à l'étude d'un chef-d'uvre de la littérature fantastique : Dracula, roman que Bram Stoker avait écrit à la fin du XIXème siècle et qui n'a jamais cessé de faire rêver les générations. Doté de pouvoirs extraordinaires, Dracula apparaît comme une énigme à déchiffrer. A travers le fantastique, nous nous proposons de découvrir la véritable signification de cet être étrange et de préciser la place et le rôle de l'archétype initiatique dans le roman. Dans une première partie notre objectif est d'étudier l'émergence du phénomène fantastique et du personnage du vampire, en suivant sa naissance dans la littérature, et en retrouvant ses origines dans la mythologie et l'histoire. La deuxième partie est consacrée au fantastique dans Dracula. Elle met en lumière l'espace, les personnages, l'image et les pouvoirs surnaturels du vampire. Dans la troisième et dernière partie, il s'agit d'analyser l'approche psychanalytique du fantastique dans le roman en mettant en valeur l'image érotique, le problème du mal et les différents conflits psychanalytiques présents dans Dracula. / This thesis is devoted to the study of the master piece from the Fantastic literature: Dracula, a novel that Bram Stoker wrote around the end of the XIXth century and that has relentlessly inspired mankind one generation after the other. Gifted with extraordinary powers, Dracula emerged as an enigma that required deciphering. Across the Fantastic, we attempt to discover the real implications of this mysterious being and to point out the position and role of the initiating archetype in the novel. The aim of the first part of the thesis is to study the emergence of the Fantastic phenomenon and of the vampire character through following its birth trail across the literature and tracking its origins in mythology and history. The second part deals with the Fantastic aspect of the novel. It highlights the setting, the characters in addition to portraying the image and the supernatural powers of the vampire. The third and last part deals with the analysis of the psychoanalytical approach of the Fantastic within the novel through appreciating the erotic image, the problem of evil and the different psychoanalytical conflicts present within Dracula.

Les cérémonies d’ouverture et de clôture des Jeux Olympiques modernes (1896-2008) se composent d’un rituel et d’un spectacle, inspirées des Jeux Olympiques de l’Antiquité, des conceptions de Pierre de Coubertin ainsi que du contexte dans lesquelles elles évoluent au cours du XX e siècle.Pour dégager le sens de ces spectacles populaires, trois niveaux d’analyses sont indispensables.Dans un premier temps nous nous interrogerons sur le sens de la liturgie olympique, c’est à dire la dimension symbolique du rituel olympique. L’apport de l’Antiquité est à ce sujet essentiel.Dans un second temps, nous nous questionnerons sur l’impact de l’esthétique et la manière de mettre en scène ces spectacles. Les conceptions de Pierre de Coubertin, véritable connaisseur des mises en scène, est ici l’élément déterminant. Nous verrons également l’apport de théoriciens et d’artistes comme Maurice Pottecher ou René Morax et John Ruskin dans l’esthétique souhaitée par Coubertin.Enfin, dans un dernier point et pour mettre en perspective les deux première thématiques, nous nous intéresserons à la dimension dramaturgique de ces cérémonies pour voir que deux thèmes traversent l’ensemble des spectacles ; le culte à mystère et la science. / Opening and closing ceremonies of the modern Olympic Games (1896-2008) are made up of a ritual and a show, inspired by the Olympic Games of antiquity, conception of Pierre de Coubertin as well as of context in which they evolve in the course of XXth century.To clear the sense of these popular shows, three levels of analyses are necessary.At first, we will think about the sense of Olympic liturgy, that is symbolic dimension of the Olympic ritual. The essential subject in this case is the contribution of antiquity.In a second point, we will be questioned on the impact of the aesthetics and the way to stage these shows. Pierre de Coubertin's conceptions, in this case, is conciderated as the decisive element of the true expert of productions. Endeed, We will see the contribution of theoreticians and artists Maurice Pottecher or René Morax and John Ruskin in the desired aesthetics by Coubertin.Finally,in a last point, in order to put in perspective two previous themes, we will be interested in the dramaturgic dimension of these formalities to see that two topics cross all shows; worship with mystery and science.

Michel Tournier est l’une des grandes figures du roman français contemporain. Son œuvre est remarquable à la fois par sa dimension philosophique et par sa dimension mythique. Nous constatons que des thèmes regroupés sous l’angle philosophique et mythique comme l’ogre, le double, l’inversion sont bel et bien analysés en France. Notre recherche développera donc une philosophie de la vie ou de l’existence humaine sur le bonheur, en exploitant des thèmes récurrents chez Tournier, le voyage, la solitude, le bonheur, etc. L'image du départ est source de réflexions dans la plupart des romans de Tournier où le voyage s’impose comme la suite logique et dynamique de l’intrigue et de la thématique, et dans ce voyage la recherche du bonheur semble indispensable. Ainsi, notre recherche sera consacrée à une lecture des textes en ayant recours aux approches thématiques de Gaston Bachelard, à une analyse du moteur du voyage et de l’évolution des esprits des personnages dans le voyage initiatique. Dans la Première Partie, nous essayons d’analyser trois niveaux d’initiation : à travers les voyages, les images, l’écriture. La dimension spirituelle de l'écriture permet de révéler le sens du vrai bonheur, fondé sur le respect de la nature, l’éternité et la sérénité, ce qui s'approche de la conception du bonheur dans la philosophie orientale. Et surtout, elle exprime une idée de la conscience de l'écrivain sur la beauté de la nature et de la vie. Dans la Deuxième Partie, nous étudierons comment les héros réagissent, surmontent le destin solitaire de l’homme et acquièrent le bonheur. La quête des personnages se répère au début comme une recherche du bonheur corporel ; à la fin elle se traduit par une reconstruction du monde et une quête spirituelle. Le bonheur serait enfin réalisé dans une quête du sacré, par la resacralisation du monde et des phénomènes célestes. Dans la Troisième Partie, nous étudierons les fantasmes et le bonheur de l’écrivain à travers le côté obsédant de l’écriture. Le côté narcissique de l'écrivain se révèle d'abord dans la reprise de la rêverie de ses personnages, la circulation des mêmes thèmes ou expressions dans les différents romans et essais. Puis ses fantasmes résident dans l'éloge de l'innocence enfantine. Le narcissisme de l'écrivain se manifeste encore dans la mise en relation de la vocation créatrice avec la divinité. / Michel Tournier is one of the great figures of contemporary french novel. His work is remarkable both for its philosophical dimension and its mythic dimension. We find that the philosophical and mythic themes as the ogre, the double, the inversion are thoroughly analyzed in France. So our research will develop a philosophy of happiness about the life and the human existence, by exploring the recurring themes as the journey, the solitude, the happiness, etc. In most novels of Tournier, the image of the departure is the root of thoughts and the journey seems like the logic and dynamic result of the history and the theme. And in this journey the search of happiness seems essential. Thus, our research will be devoted to a reading of the texts by using the thematic approachs of Gaston Bachelard, an analysis of the motive of the journey and the evolution of the minds of characters in the initiatory journey. In the First Part, we try to analyze three levels of initiation : through the travelling, the images, the writing. The spiritual dimension of writing can reveal the meaning of true happiness, based on the respect for nature, the eternity and the serenity, which is similar to the concept of happiness in eastern philosophy. And especially, it expresses the consciousness of the writer on the beauty of nature and life. In the Second Part, we will study how the protagonists react, overcome the solitary fate of man and gain the happiness. The quest of the characters appears at the beginning to a search for the physical happiness ; in the end it leads to a reconstruction of the world and a spiritual quest. The happiness is finally fulfilled in a quest for the sacredness, by the resacralization of the world and the celestial phenomena. In the Third Part, we will explore the fantasies and the happiness of the writer through the haunting aspect of writing. The narcissism of the writer is first revealed in the recovery of the dream of his characters, the repetition of the same themes and expressions in different novels and essays. Then his fantasies resident in praise of childlike innocence. The writer's narcissism is still apparent in the association between the creative vocation and the divinity.
