Ao pôr em plano destacado uma obra e seu autor - o Compêndio da História do Brasil, de José Inácio de Abreu e Lima, publicado em 1843 -, o trabalho objetiva compreender como uma deliberação consciente visando a determinado fim - emancipar -, que orientou toda uma vida, atualizava-se nas páginas de um livro oferecido em especial à \"mocidade Brasileira\" como uma espécie de espelho no qual ela pudesse se reconhecer, e, assim, situava-se entre outros discursos e práticas destinados a formar os brasileiros, no movimento de expansão para dentro que individualiza a experiência imperial brasileira, em meados do século XIX. O trabalho objetiva também demonstrar que, embora as páginas de um compêndio não contenham o \"resumo do mais substancial\" de uma vida, elas propiciaram novos embates e polêmicas entre tantos outros travados por aquele que, ainda que reconhecido como um dos principais defensores da solução monárquica para o Brasil, não encontrava lugar na ordem imperial que se afirmava. / José Inácio de Abreu e Lima published in 1843 his Compêndio da História do Brasil (Handbook of Brazilian History). This doctoral thesis aims to study this book and its author. On the one hand, its objective is to understand how a conscientious deliberation in order to achieve a very precise goal -emancipation -, a guide line to the whole life of Abreu e Lima, found its expression on this book, specially offered to the \"Brazilian youth\" as a kind of a mirror in which the youngsters could recognize themselves. Doing so, the book found its place among other discourses and practices which function was to shape the Brazilians, and became a part of the process of inland expansion (expansão para dentro) that was a main feature of the Brazilian Empire during the first half of the 19th century. On the other hand, this doctoral thesis intends to demonstrate that, although the pages of a handbook do not express \"the most substantial summary\" of the biography of their author, they can certainly provide subjects for new debates and controversies among so many others sustained by Abreu e Lima, who was recognized as one of the main supporters of the monarchist solution to Brazil but never found his place on the Imperial State.

The Examination of Confidentiality in A School Based Setting

This research study explored the policies and procedures that education systems abide by, as well as how these policies are enforced to protect the confidentiality of dependent children’s private information from being exposed in their schools to non-relatives and uninvolved parties to their case. Elementary, middle school, and high school faculty’s perception of confidentiality was explored to identify individual competence when working with social workers during their direct contact visit with dependent children on school premises. Data collection included anonymous online surveys of 30-school faculty of various schools in the Southern California. There were no significant findings to support school faculty’s lack of competence of confidentiality protocol when a Department of Children and Family Service social worker conducts a visit on school premises. Future research should involve a qualitative study of school faculty perceptions to gain more accurate and unbiased information from participants.

Essays on the Upper Mississippi River and Illinois Waterway and U.S. grain market

This dissertation examines several issues regarding the congestion on the Upper Mississippi River and Illinois Waterway. Chapter II identifies and measures the impact of lock congestion on grain barge rates on these waterways. Results indicate grain barge rates on both rivers are not affected by lagged lock congestion. In present time, however, lock congestion in the lower reaches of the upper Mississippi and Illinois Rivers are found to increase barge rates that link the north central United States to the lower Mississippi Gulf port area. The findings suggest the impact of lock congestion on grain barge rates is moderate. Chapter III explores the interaction between grain prices in export and domestic markets and transportation rates linking these markets over time. Three model frameworks were evaluated and some consistent results are observed. In general, shocks in transportation rates (barge, rail, and ocean) explain a great proportion of the variation in corn and soybean market prices in the long run, suggesting the importance of transportation in grain price determination. The volatile ocean freight rates are the mostimportant transportation rates contributing to the variation in grain prices, while shocks in barge rates on the Upper Mississippi River and Illinois Waterway generally explain less than 15 percent of the variation in grain prices. The dynamic interrelationships among the six evaluated transportation rates are also found. In addition, the north central corn markets likely have the most influence over other markets while soybean export price dominates the soybean market in the long run. Chapter IV estimates the structural demand for grain barge transportation on both the upper Mississippi and Illinois Rivers. Results suggest foreign grain demand is the most influential force affecting grain barge demand on both rivers. Also, results indicate an inelastic demand for grain barge transportation on the Upper Mississippi in the short run; demand is price elastic in the long run. The price elasticity for grain barge demand on the Illinois River is consistently inelastic. Additionally, the winter season and floods affect demand on the Upper Mississippi negatively, while barge demand increases on the Illinois River in winter.

Besides, some discussions will be redeemed on cinematic apparatus, since its conceptual proposition by Baudry, through updates as proposed by Metz and some recent notions such as those presented by André Parente. The outlook on the cinematic apparatus are related to the concepts of mise en abyme, operated by André Gide and subsequently developed by Dällenbach, and applied to the films of David Lynch by the work of Fatima Chinita; and the metacinematographic reflectivity and metafilmic reflectivity, presented by Metz, as well. It will present another issues that orbit the filmography of the director and researches on the topic oftenly, namely: the dispossession of artistic languages, conflicts between a genre cinema and an independent film and the surrealistic art movement. These discussions help us to understand some secondary traits of our research that pervade both the trajectory of the author as the films under our observation. The analyze of both movies are based on the routes listed above and, where possible, articulated with transdisciplinary thoughts that allow us to explore specific aspects, especially with cyberculture, studies of film theory and psychoanalysis. The relationship of these different theoretical perspectives endow the artifices to deepen narrative, technical and aesthetic instances of Mulholland Drive and Inland Empire. The management of those aspects apparently fragmented, in theory and in the works of the north-american filmmaker, are reflected in the structure of this work, with noncumulative and non-sequential chapters for each treated subject. Finally, the conceptual operations proposed to analyze the chosen corpus of moving images allow us to defend that reflectivity is a structural element in the David Lynch film works and, in general, in some parts of contemporary cinema. / Este trabalho se propõe a analisar os modos de agenciamento do cinema reflexivo proposto pelo artista estadunidense David Lynch, com atenção maior para as obras Mulholland Drive e Inland Empire. Para isso, serão resgatadas discussões sobre o dispositivo cinematográfico, desde a proposição por Baudry, passando por atualizações como as propostas por Metz e noções mais recentes como as apresentadas por André Parente. As perspectivas sobre o dispositivo são relacionadas com o conceito de mise en abyme; operacionalizado por André Gide, posteriormente desenvolvido por Dällenbach, e aplicados aos filmes de David Lynch por Fátima Chinita; bem como os de reflexividade metacinematográfica e reflexividade metafílmica, apresentados por Metz. São ainda trabalhadas algumas questões que costumam orbitar a filmografia do cineasta e as pesquisas referentes ao tema, sendo estes: a desterritorialização das linguagens artísticas, os conflitos entre um cinema de gênero e um cinema independente e o surrealismo. Estas discussões nos ajudam a compreender traços secundários de nossa pesquisa que perpassam tanto a trajetória do autor quanto os filmes em observação. As análises dos filmes são fundamentadas nos percursos apresentados acima e, quando possível, articuladas com pensamentos transdisciplinares que nos possibilitem explorar aspectos específicos, principalmente com estudos da cibercultura, das teorias cinematográficas e da psicanálise. A relação dessas diferentes correntes teóricas nos munem de artifícios para aprofundar instâncias narrativas, técnicas e estéticas de Mulholland Drive e Inland Empire. O ordenamento desses aspectos aparentemente fragmentados, na teoria e nas obras do cineasta estadunidense, traduzem-se na própria estrutura do trabalho, com capítulos referentes a cada tema e não-cumulativos e sequenciais. Por fim, as operações conceituais propostas à análise das imagens em movimento do corpus escolhido nos permitem defender que a reflexividade é um elemento estruturante nos trabalhos do cinema de David Lynch e, de modo geral, em partes do cinema contemporâneo.

Considerando que o custo de transporte ou custo logístico chega, em alguns casos, a representar até 30% do valor final de vários produtos agrícolas, verificou-se que a navegação fluvial tornou-se um grande fator de redução no custo dos produtos, que necessitam de transporte em longa distância e, ao mesmo tempo, mantém um fluxo de carga muito elevado. Esta economia no custo de frete pode chegar a valores acima de 30%, quando se utiliza embarcações fluviais de terceiros e uma economia de mais de 40% ao se utilizar embarcações próprias, na fase do transporte hidroviário. Pela metodologia utilizada no trabalho foram identificadas duas regiões distintas: a consumidora e a produtora. Esta condição permitiu que fosse apresentado um estudo logístico específico, com maior detalhamento de rota e melhor especificação de equipamentos a serem utilizados, os quais permitiram obter resultados que possibilitaram otimizar o frete. Comparou-se os resultados desta análise de transporte com finalidade de obter relações entre custos e benefícios observados em outras modalidades de transporte utilizados nesta região, potencialmente rica e carente de transportes eficientes. / The Tietê-Paraná's waterway was analyzed here under the point of view of its use for the commercial sailing; being good for the canal of the products of the rich center-west region of Brazil to Santos' harbour, with objective to show the advance multimodal transporting in grains drainage. Considering that the cost of transporting or logistic's cost reach thirty per cent of the final value of several agricultural products. The fluvial sailing is seen today as a great reduction factor in the costs of products, that need transport of long distance and at the same time it maintains a very high load flow. This reduction of freight may get thirty per cent if used undertaking boat, but forty per cent or more will be get if used self-boat. The work has a sequence that will begin with the general characterization of the area consumer, as well as the location of the producing areas, presenting a specific study where it will consist a larger route specially and the equipments to be it used. This source will show a series of calculations that they will have later as objective to arrive to a freight optimized in this project, which intends to offer the analysis of transport alternative comparable with the costs and benefits of the other modalities of this area, potentially rich and poor of efficient transports.

Tal processo se encontra em estágio avançado no trecho de remanso do reservatório da Usina Hidroelétrica de Barra Bonita, localizada no interior do Estado de São Paulo e vem causando dificuldades ao transporte hidroviário. A usina, por sua vez, está instalada na Hidrovia Tietê-Paraná, a mais importante hidrovia do país, responsável pelo escoamento de uma parcela significativa da produção agrícola de exportação. Esta dissertação se propôs a estimar o volume, a taxa anual de assoreamento e a evolução espacial dos depósitos de leito observada no trecho especificado, a partir de uma metodologia que envolve a geração de modelos digitais de elevação e modelagem numérica em ambiente computacional. A partir dos resultados obtidos, foi possível reconhecer os mecanismos envolvidos no processo de sedimentação no reservatório em estudo, permitindo assim o posterior estudo e implementação de medidas estruturais e não estruturais, que visem minimizar os impactos deste processo de sedimentação à navegação na hidrovia Tietê-Paraná / Abstract: The dam reservation is an artificial lake and the sedimentation process occurs since its inception, due to hydraulic changes caused on the natural river where the dam is installed. This process is at an advanced stage in the backwater stretch of the hydroelectric plant's reservoir of Barra Bonita, located within the State of Sao Paulo and has been causing difficulties for water transportation. The plant, in turn, is installed in the Tietê-Paraná, the most important waterway in the country, responsible for disposing of a significant portion of agricultural production for export. This dissertation aimed to estimate the volume, the annual rate of sedimentation and spatial evolution of the deposits observed in the bed section specified, from a methodology that involves the generation of digital elevation models and numerical modeling in computational environment. The results presented here were positive to recognize the mechanisms involved in the sedimentation reservoir under study, as well as create subsidies for the adoption of structural and nonstructural to minimize the impact of the sedimentation process in the navigation Tiete-Parana waterway / Mestrado / Recursos Hidricos, Energeticos e Ambientais / Mestre em Engenharia Civil

Robert Louis Stevenson’s Romantic Sensibility : Nature and Human Emotion in An Inland Voyage and Travels with a Donkey in the Cévennes

In the latter half of the 19th century, Robert Louis Stevenson set off on two journeys through Belgium and France, two travels that were to become the subject of his early travelogues An Inland Voyage and Travels with a Donkey in the Cévennes. In these two travelogues Stevenson elaborates extensively on depictions of nature, and through these depictions, Stevenson suggests that there exists a special relationship between natural beauty and human emotion. In fact, this portrayal of human emotion as bound with nature can be considered as significantly Romantic. Consequently, this study investigates Stevenson’s depictions of natural beauty from the Romantic conceptualizations, the beautiful, the sublime, and the picturesque. However, these Romantic theories are subject to various definitions and perceptions by different aesthetes and intellectuals. Therefore, in this study a few important Romantic philosophers have been given special consideration, those are, Edmund Burke, William Gilpin, William Wordsworth, and John Ruskin. The analysis of Stevenson’s depictions is conducted by way of discussing excerpts and quotations from Stevenson’s writing in relation to these Romantic perspectives. Although these travelogues are misplaced as Romantic in terms of period of time, I argue that Robert Louis Stevenson’s depictions of natural beauty and human emotion in An Inland Voyage and Travels with a Donkey in the Cévennes reveal an interesting Romantic sensibility, which is founded on a combination of the aesthetic and philosophical ideas of the picturesque, the beautiful and the sublime.
