Keep the conversation going : a study of conversational spaces during family business succession

This practice doctorate study addresses the question of succession in family business, and whether it is possible to facilitate the succession process and enhance family relations by working in a systemic, conversational and dialogical way. The high percentage of successions in family businesses which fail and result in closed down businesses has led to extensive research and caused public debate in Sweden. This study contains of four sections. The first section gives an introduction to my felt need of developing the facilitation of the succession process in business families. It also contains a philosophical background to the systemic way of working and a presents my ontology, epistemology and methods for my study and its ethical considerations. The second section puts my study in a wider perspective of this study with a short presentation of the field of family business research; there are interviews with mainstream consultants that are elaborated on and lastly there is a gender perspective on family business consultations. The eight essays in the third section portray my action research into my facilitation of the succession process in the Bjärges family. The succession process began at the end of 2006 and lasted almost five years. Facilitation was performed during the first two and a half years and the last follow-up conversation was held in the beginning of 2011. The Bjärges essays are written in a generative and reflexive way by means of radical, social poetics thus allowing personal involvement in the text. Some of the essays study the succession process from the perspective of dialogical moments; a couple of them reflect on the succession process in a longer perspective and finally there are follow-up conversations with the family members. The fourth section deals with knowledge gained from working with this study, knowledge I have taken into my practice where I facilitate family members to make their own decisions. It also includes my reflections on theory and on differences in consultancy to family business. Accountants and legal advisors focus on what is best for business, while facilitators working in the dialogical way have family relations at heart. This work proposes a 3rd Way, a new way of facilitating and supporting business families by collaboration of different competences in multi-professional teams. Thus both business and family relations would be addressed.

Twitter as a communications instrument to support the decision making process in UAE police

Social media are increasingly becoming platforms of choice for communication among individuals and groups of the public, and hence organisations are interested in engaging with communities and the public through this form of media to gain intelligence from such engagements to support their decision making processes. Yet, organisations are missing on realising the potential value from using social media for this type of interaction and engagement, while paucity in research addressing practical ways to use social media communication in supporting decision making still persists. This research investigates and proposes a practical framework for using social media – specifically Twitter – as a communications instrument to support the decision making process in police organisations. The research design is based on developing and evaluating a proof of concept representing engagements between the United Arab Emirates (UAE) police as a case study of police organisations with communities and members of the public in the UAE. The proof of concept is designed based on comparing and contrasting current practices by the UAE police with models, trends, and practices discussed in related literature. The research uses the Grounded Theory methodology to guide sampling, data collection, and analysis. The contribution of the research is to both theory and practice. The research addresses a gap in the body of knowledge for a framework that guides the development of models, policies, and practices for the use of social media as a communication instrument to support decision making in governmental organisations, specifically the police. In addition, the framework offers practical insights to policy makers into using different social media to engage with the public in communication, interactions, and knowledge sharing, with the aim of supporting decision making.

Estudo sobre a percepção dos servidores sobre a comunicação organizacional do CESNORS / A study about the public servers' perceptions regarding the CESNORS organizational communication

This study aims to analyse public servers' perceptions in a public federal institution of higher education, more especifically regarding the organizational communication. In this perspective, there is the case of the Centro de Educação Superior Norte - RS (CESNORS), in English, Superior North Education Center, belonging to the Federal University of Santa Maria, in the city of Frederico Westphalen RS, which develops a variety of communication actions and services, through the Communication Assistance Project , directed to both the internal and external public. Bearing that in mind, the research method was organized into two phases. The first phase followed a quantitative approach, and its objective was to identify the servers' perceptions. The obtained data was analysed through descriptive statistics. In this phase, it was identified the servers' profiles and perceptions in relation to the internal communication, concerning the variables of quality, production, dissemination, transparency, objectivity, efficacy and fluidity. In the second phase, an exploratory qualitative approach was used, based on empirical research. Besides that, as a secondary data source, a documental analysis called Organizational Processes Structure Analysis (RTA) was used, derived from the Planning Administration Office (Pró-reitoria de Planejamento - PROPLAN), related to the Communication Assistance Office, allied to the Dimension 4 - Communication with the society , in relation to the quality references, being that showed in the results discussion. Therefore, through the indicators found in this study, it was possible to elaborate a proposal to improve the organizational communication at the institution, considering it as a tool for strategic planning. The results show, in general, the perception of the servers on organizational communication is positive and deserves continuous improvement in the development and / or maintenance of communication strategies. It is expected that this study will serve as a reflection for the realization of a more effective and transparent communication, in favor of the institutional organization. / O presente estudo tem como objetivo analisar a percepção dos servidores de uma Instituição Federal de Ensino Superior (IFES) acerca da comunicação organizacional. Dentro dessa perceptiva, têm-se o caso do Centro de Educação Superior Norte - RS (CESNORS), em uma unidade descentralizada da Universidade Federal de Santa Maria (UFSM), em Frederico Westphalen - RS, que desenvolve, por intermédio do Projeto de Assessoria de Comunicação , uma gama de ações e serviços comunicacionais direcionados para seus públicos, interno e externo. Para tanto, o método de pesquisa foi dividido em duas etapas. A primeira etapa, de abordagem quantitativa, foi para identificar a percepção dos servidores, sendo que os dados obtidos foram analisados por meio de estatísticas descritivas. Nessa etapa, evidenciou-se a caracterização do perfil e a percepção dos servidores sobre a comunicação interna, em torno das variáveis de qualidade, produção, disseminação, transparência, objetividade, eficácia e fluidez. Na segunda etapa, optou-se pela abordagem qualitativa, do tipo exploratório, baseada em pesquisa empírica. Além disso, utilizou-se, como fonte secundária, a análise documental Análise de Estrutura e Processos Organizacionais (RTA), da Pró-reitoria de Planejamento (PROPLAN), sobre a Assessoria de Comunicação, aliada à Dimensão 4- Comunicação com a sociedade , relativa a indicadores referenciais de qualidade na comunicação, sendo esta de caráter ilustrativo na discussão dos resultados. Assim, por meio desses indicadores, foi possível elaborar a proposta para aperfeiçoar a comunicação organizacional, considerando-a como uma ferramenta do planejamento estratégico. Os resultados encontrados apontam, de modo geral, que a percepção dos servidores sobre a comunicação organizacional é positiva e merece aperfeiçoamento contínuo para o desenvolvimento e/ou manutenção de estratégias de comunicação. Espera-se que a realização desse estudo sirva de reflexões para a realização de uma comunicação mais efetiva e transparente, em prol da gestão institucional.

O comportamento empreendedor de diretores da UFSM e sua percepção quanto à universidade empreendedora / Entrepreneur of the behavior of directors and their perception UFSM for entrepreneurial university

Since its inception, in the eleventh century, the university was born with the primary mission of teaching, adding over time, research and extension. Are currently being investigated by several researchers incorporating the economic and social development as a new mission in IFES, showing that institutional perspective, in which the elements of the old model are retained and processed, generating actions and entrepreneurial attitudes in the university, to promote and coordinate interaction "entrepreneurial university", establishing strategies for joint teaching, research and extension with society. Thus, this study aimed to analyze the entrepreneurial behavior of teaching units of directors of UFSM and its influence on perception of the entrepreneurial university. It was adopted as the research method qualitative approach, exploratory, based on empirical research. The units of analysis were the directors of teaching units UFSM. Data were analyzed using content analysis technique, categorical, enunciation and lexicométrica, and the analysis of categories defined a priori and not a priori (Bardin, 2011). The a priori categories - opportunities and initiative, planning and take calculated risks (McClelland, 1972); and economic and social development, junior company and interaction with the community (Guaranys, 2010) were defined based on the theoretical framework and the aim of this study; and the category does not a priori - structure and management of people - emerged from the speech of respondents. In addition, it was used as a secondary source to Self Assessment Research Institutional 2014 / UFSM, in order to contribute as "adjunct" to analyze the results of illustrative discussion of the results in this study. The entrepreneurial characteristic opportunities and initiative was the one that stood out as the main feature of the respondents; followed by the feature planning and take calculated risks, which were matched. As for the category structure and personnel management, it was emphasized by the majority of respondents, of which it is positioned in a similar way as the observations and findings on matters involving these two aspects. As the interviewees' perceptions about entrepreneurial university, the aspect that proved better understood was the interaction with the community, followed by the junior company of understanding and finally, economic and social development, as being the least understood by respondents. In order to meet the objective of the study - to examine the entrepreneurial behavior of teaching units of directors of UFSM and its influence on the perception of the entrepreneurial university - it was concluded that the entrepreneurial behavior of these directly influence their perception of the entrepreneurial university. / Desde a sua criação, no século XI, a universidade nasceu com a missão precípua do ensino, agregando ao longo do tempo, a pesquisa e a extensão. Atualmente vem sendo investigado por vários pesquisadores a incorporação do desenvolvimento econômico e social como uma nova missão nas IFES, evidenciando outra perspectiva institucional, na qual os elementos do modelo antigo são retidos e transformados, gerando ações e atitudes empreendedoras na universidade, para promover e coordenar a interação universidade empreendedora , estabelecendo estratégias para articular ensino, pesquisa e extensão com a sociedade. Nesse sentido, este estudo teve como objetivo analisar o comportamento empreendedor de diretores de unidades de ensino da UFSM e sua influência na percepção quanto à universidade empreendedora. Adotou-se como método de pesquisa a abordagem qualitativa, do tipo exploratório, baseado em pesquisa empírica. As unidades de análise foram os diretores de unidades de ensino da UFSM. Os dados foram analisados utilizando a técnica de análise de conteúdo, categorial, enunciação e lexicométrica, sendo as categorias de análise definidas a priori e não a priori (BARDIN, 2011). As categorias a priori oportunidades e iniciativa, planejamento e assumir riscos calculados (MCCLELLAND, 1972); e, desenvolvimento econômico e social, empresa júnior e interação com a comunidade (GUARANYS, 2010) foram definidas com base no referencial teórico e no objetivo deste estudo; e a categoria não a priori estrutura e gestão de pessoas emergiu da fala dos entrevistados. Além disso, utilizou-se como fonte secundária a Pesquisa de Autoavaliação Institucional 2014/UFSM, no intuito de contribuir como coadjuvante para análise dos resultados encontrados, de caráter ilustrativo na discussão dos resultados neste estudo. A característica empreendedora oportunidades e iniciativa foi a que mais se destacou, como a característica principal dos entrevistados; seguida pela característica planejamento e assumir riscos calculados, que ficaram igualadas. Quanto à categoria estrutura e gestão de pessoas, a mesma foi ressaltada pela maioria dos entrevistados, nos quais se posicionaram de forma semelhante quanto às observações e constatações acerca dos assuntos que envolvem esses dois aspectos. Quanto à percepção dos entrevistados acerca de universidade empreendedora, o aspecto que se mostrou melhor compreendido foi a interação com a comunidade, seguido pelo entendimento de empresa júnior e por fim, desenvolvimento econômico e social, como sendo o menos compreendido pelos entrevistados. De modo a responder o objetivo do estudo analisar o comportamento empreendedor de diretores de unidades de ensino da UFSM e sua influência na percepção quanto à universidade empreendedora se concluiu que o comportamento empreendedor dos mesmos influenciam diretamente na sua percepção quanto à universidade empreendedora.

O presente trabalho tem como objetivo refletir sobre o papel do Apoiador em Saúde no Município de São Bernardo do Campo, descrevendo as experiências vividas por uma apoiadora no período de 2010 a 2016, identificando as potencialidades e dificuldades desta estratégia. Este modelo de apoio instituído no município em 2010, visava o trabalho de forma articulada com as equipes de Estratégia Saúde da Família, atuando tanto no apoio matricial quanto nos processos de trabalho e para fortalecer a integralidade na construção do cuidado em rede, onde o apoiador seria um meio pelo qual os trabalhadores e os serviços de saúde e intersetoriais estabelecessem uma relação de forma horizontal entre os pontos de atenção. Através da pesquisa qualitativa, com uso da narrativa, a autora descreve sua atuação nos espaços coletivos ao qual participava, locais potentes para os apoiadores exercerem seu papel, mas, também, locais de disputas e conflitos. / The current work\'s objective is to show the role of a Health Supporter Agent in the county of São Bernardo do Campo, describing experiences lived by a Health Supporter Agent during the periods of 2010 to 2016, identifying the potentialities and difficulties of the given strategy. Through the literature, it is identify, areas and subjects that allow the analyses of institutional management R&D projects (IMRDP). The history of the two institutes was study to identify the similarity and the differences of them. The field research is composed by an interview which was framed through literature subjects and documents in the following topics: general vision and IMRDP operations in the institutes; institutional management; process effectives results; people´s communication involved with projects and the institution; experiences acquired in the institutions. Of all interviews, one quarter was directed to high management, one quarter to functional gerency and two quarter to project managers. The discussion results, thanks to the methodology and schedule, determined that institutions did not have IMRDP, although both institutions considered the importance of its implementation. It was clear that the IMRDP structure, in any institution, have to consider the institutional culture, history, staff, structure and market, even though there are similar subjects and areas between the two institutions. / Estudo de casos comparativo de dois institutos tecnológicos em países do Mercosul o Instituto de Tecnologia Industrial (INTI), na Argentina e o Instituto de Pesquisa Tecnológica (IPT), no Brasil com foco na gestão de projetos de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento (P&D), no nível institucional. Identifica na literatura áreas e temas pelos quais é possível analisar a Gestão Institucional de Projetos de P&D (GIPPD), para então voltar-se ao estudo da história das duas instituições, contextualizando-as e identificando pontos de identidade e diferenciação. Elabora uma pesquisa de campo utilizando-se de entrevista estruturada, a partir do mapeamento que resultou na solução gráfica representativa dos temas identificados no estudo da literatura e dos documentos: visão geral da GIPPD e seu funcionamento em cada instituição; estrutura organizacional; projetos de P&D e o planejamento institucional; Gestão Institucional; resultados efetivos dos processos; comunicação entre os atores dos projetos e a instituição e experiências adquiridas na instituição. As entrevistas foram dirigidas numa proporção de um quarto à Alta Direção (AD), um quarto aos Gerentes Funcionais (GF) e dois quartos aos Gerentes de Projeto (GP). A discussão dos resultados, facilitada pela metodologia e a tabela dinâmica empregadas, permitiu que se concluísse pela nãoexistência de uma GIPPD estruturada nas instituições estudadas, embora os entrevistados considerem válida a sua implantação nas suas organizações. Observa-se que a estruturação de GIPPD em qualquer instituição deverá levar em conta sua cultura institucional, sua história, seu quadro funcional, sua estrutura e seu mercado, no sentido amplo, embora elas venham a ter sempre um conjunto básico de áreas e temas comuns.

Legislation and applicable concepts to protected natural areas in Peru / Legislación y conceptos aplicables a las áreas naturales protegidas en el Perú

There are 78 protected areas in Peru covering 22 million hectares corresponding almost 17 percent of national territory. This article reviews essential aspects of protected natural areas studying scopes, purposes, types, categories and levels such as: requirements for setting, amendment and repeal; activities allowed and forbidden within them; institutional management, among others. Finally, this work concludes with some brief thoughts on legal and institutional challenges of the Sistema Nacional de Áreas NaturalesProtegidas por el Estado (SINANPE) (National System of State ProtectedNatural Areas). / En el Perú existen setenta y ocho áreas protegidas de nivel nacional, que en su conjunto cubren más de veinte y dos millones de hectáreas que equivalen casi al diecisiete por ciento del territorio nacional. El presente artículo, tras abordar los alcances, objetivos, tipos, categorías y niveles de las áreas naturales protegidas, pasa revista a los más trascendentes aspectos que las envuelven, tales como los requerimientos para su establecimiento, modificación y derogación; las actividades permitidas y prohibidas dentro de ellas; su gestión institucional; entre otros. Finalmente arriba a unas concisas reflexiones sobre los retos legales e institucionales que el Sistema Nacional de Áreas Naturales Protegidas por el Estado (Sinanpe) debería afrontar.

Managing a private higher education institution within the current higher regulatory context in South Africa

The South Africa higher education environment has been regulated through the enactment of policies promulgated by the governments of the day since the establishment of South African higher education. Even in the early days, the higher education sector comprised both public and private higher education institutions. Since South Africa’s democratic election in 1994, the higher education environment has been altered by the current government by means of policy enactment. Limited research has been conducted on the impact of the current regulatory context on the management of a private higher education institution. Therefore, the focus of this study was to determine how a private higher education institution within the current higher regulatory context in South Africa is managed. A qualitative research methodology was used to study the phenomenon. For this purpose, a case study, an accredited and registered private higher education institution was identified and individual interviews conducted with its six managers. The study adhered to ethical principles and techniques to enhance the validity/trustworthiness of the findings. The study found that the current regulatory enactment that was initiated under the new democratic government elected in 1994 had far-reaching implications for the private higher education sector. As a consequence, management structures, policies and procedures, quality assurance processes and procedures and management functions were altered. However, some of the regulatory criteria still have an impact on the management functions as private providers still struggle for full recognition by the government. / Educational Studies / M. Ed.
