Unknown Date (has links)
The purpose of this study is to understand whether 9th grade students can actually manipulate the states of motion of objects and understand the concepts of mathematics embedded in the graphs when they are dealing with the linear position— time graphs. Ten tool graphs were designed based on the position-time graph as the research tools in this study. Twelve 9th grade students, 6 males and 6 females, were chosen randomly. Through doing semi-structured interviews, the researcher collected the data and deeply explored whether participants could manipulate the states of motion of objects and comprehend the mathematical concepts embedded in the graphs when they were dealing with the linear position time graphs. The collected data were analyzed qualitatively and organized. The conclusions are as follows: 1. The students’ capability of slope and intercept in mathematics is insufficient, and it influences their learning of the position-time graphs. 2. Students only have little understanding of the presentation of the graphs. Thus, they cannot apply mathematical abilities or interpret real phenomena. Following suggestions are provided according to the conclusions in this study: 1. Mathematical teaching should be emphasized on the connection with the science domain. 2. Mathematical teaching should highlight the connection between abstract symbols and real situations 3. Science teaching should guide the students to transfer the new knowledge to the learned knowledge. 4. Multiple teaching resources should be used properly to help students proceed to learn multiple intelligences. The direction of further studies can aim at different participants, different patterns of questions or expanding the study on speed-time graphs and acceleration-time graphs to apply the knowledge and theories of science and mathematics in life.

Periodic Search Strategies For Electronic Countermeasure Receivers With Desired Probability Of Intercept For Each Frequency Band

Koksal, Emin 01 January 2010 (has links) (PDF)
Radar systems have been very effective in gathering information in a battlefield, so that the tactical actions can be decided. On the contrary, self-protection systems have been developed to break this activity of radars, for which radar signals must be intercepted to be able to take counter measures on time. Ideally, interception should be done in a certain time with a 100% probability, but in reality this is not the case. To intercept radar signals in shortest time with the highest probability, a search strategy should be developed for the receiver. This thesis studies the conditions under which the intercept time increases and the probability of intercept decreases. Moreover, it investigates the performance of the search strategy of Clarkson with respect to these conditions, which assumes that a priori knowledge about the radars that will be intercepted is available. Then, the study identifies the cases where the search strategy of Clarkson may be not desirable according to tactical necessities, and proposes a probabilistic search strategy, in which it is possible to intercept radar signals with a specified probability in a certain time.

Nonlinear Properties of Nanoscale Barium Strontium Titanate Microwave Varactors

Price, Tony S. 01 January 2012 (has links)
Barium strontium titanate thin film varactors have been widely investigated for the purpose of creating tunable front-ends for RF and microwave systems. There is an abundance of literature observing the capacitance-voltage behavior and methods on improving tunability. However, there is a lack of thorough investigations on the nonlinear behavior, specifically the third order intermodulation distortion, and the parameters that impact it. There is also a research void that needs to be filled for nanoscale barium strontium titanate varactors as nanotechnology becomes increasingly prevalent in the design of RF and microwave components. This work aims to advance the understanding of nonlinear properties of barium strontium titanate varactors. Temperature and voltage impacts on the third order intermodulation distortion products of BST varactors are observed by two-tone measurements. The material properties of the films are correlated with the nonlinear behavior of the varactors. Additionally, size reduction capabilities are shown by fabricating planar barium strontium titanate interdigital varactors with nanoscale size gaps between the electrodes. Modeling techniques are also investigated.

A Study of Statistical Power and Type I Errors in Testing a Factor Analytic Model for Group Differences in Regression Intercepts

January 2010 (has links)
abstract: In the past, it has been assumed that measurement and predictive invariance are consistent so that if one form of invariance holds the other form should also hold. However, some studies have proven that both forms of invariance only hold under certain conditions such as factorial invariance and invariance in the common factor variances. The present research examined Type I errors and the statistical power of a method that detects violations to the factorial invariant model in the presence of group differences in regression intercepts, under different sample sizes and different number of predictors (one or two). Data were simulated under two models: in model A only differences in the factor means were allowed, while model B violated invariance. A factorial invariant model was fitted to the data. Type I errors were defined as the proportion of samples in which the hypothesis of invariance was incorrectly rejected, and statistical power was defined as the proportion of samples in which the hypothesis of factorial invariance was correctly rejected. In the case of one predictor, the results show that the chi-square statistic has low power to detect violations to the model. Unexpected and systematic results were obtained regarding the negative unique variance in the predictor. It is proposed that negative unique variance in the predictor can be used as indication of measurement bias instead of the chi-square fit statistic with sample sizes of 500 or more. The results of the two predictor case show larger power. In both cases Type I errors were as expected. The implications of the results and some suggestions for increasing the power of the method are provided. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.A. Psychology 2010

Avaliação do Capim-tanzânia manejado com diferentes IAF residuais sob lotação rotacionada por cabras Boer X Saanen /

Santos, Nailson Lima. January 2009 (has links)
The experiment was conducted in the period on February/2008 to August/2008. The area was divided into 18 paddocks of 243 m2 for the study with 3 treatments arranged in a randomized blocks design with 6 replications for the grasses evaluations. The evaluations relating to the ingestive behavior of the goats were carried out, in the same area, in 12 paddocks, allocated in randomized blocks design with 4 replications. The treatments consisted in 3 levels of residual LAI (0,8 - 1,6 - 2,4). The period of rest was adopted according to the criterion of 95% of LI or when the readability remained constant during 3 consecutive weeks. Before each period of grazing have been done 20 points of height of vegetation were taken, 6 samples at the level of the soil were collected for each paddock . The animals grazed until the the remainder LAI pre-determined. Measurements were made of leaf area index (LAI) and the light interception (LI) with the equipment AccuPAR LP-80 Decagon - USA. Samples were weighed and, 400 g were kept for the separation of morphologic components (leaf, stem lap and dead). These were dried at 55° C for 72h and weighed in order to estimate the herbage mass. Density was evaluated by volume of forage with the inclined point quadrat. Laboratory analyzes were done in order to estimate the goats fed during the grazing and the samples were collected by the handing plucking method. They were measured variables which reflect the ingestive behavior in grazing as the bite mass, area, depth and the rate . Pre-grazing, the values of light interception and leaf area index were not significantly affected by treatments (P>0.05). The values of time of pre grazing of the animals... Aplicação da amostragem por interceptação por linha no levantamento de Floresta Estacional Semidecidual / Application of the line interception sampling in semideciduous forest survey

Arikawa, Eimi 22 August 2016 (has links)
The forest is built by patches of different ages, whose individuals have similar structure and approximate age , forming a forest mosaic, reporting standard idea and process. Therefore the set of trees with the same pattern structure that can be defined and describable are called natural ecounits or tree clusters. To survey natural forest is a challenge because of the diversity and complexity of the natural system. The Line Interception Sampling Method is a versatile method where lines are thrown in the area and all intercepted element is sampled. The estimates are based on the probability that the object is intercepted, and any trees attribute can be used as a random variable. In this study the natural tree clusters were sampled, and the variables of interest were: diameter at breast height (DBH), number of individuals, basal area and volume. First it was determined the identification characteristics of the tree clusters, that were mainly based on elements, as density of trees, understory density, herbaceous and woody vines. These characteristics were evaluated together. In E. E. Caetetus, where the forest is more conserved, identification was easy, and the characteristics of the standards were followed, but in Mombuca identification was difficult probably due to the constant and intense anthropogenic disturbances that have no standard. So, in the most degraded areas it is necessary to identify other characteristics that may assist in the description of the types of tree clusters. 6 were distance measures were taken from the tree cluster center to its limit, with 60° between them, in order to obtain its shape and dimensions. All trees in this hexagon had their DAP measured. At tree cluster level, the analysis of average DAP, maximum DAP indicate conservation of ecological processes in E. E. Caetetus, but in Mombuca the pattern is different. There is DAP average disorder among the tree clusters, according to the type of trees that were classified, and therefore to the successional stage it is in, and there is discontinuity of the diametric distribution. These data can be found as indication of degradation or low conservation of forest studied. The estimator used was the average diameter of the tree cluster, from which it was estimated the number of individuals, basal area and volume per hectare. The values were close to other work in the same type of vegetation and the data of E. E. Caetetus was compared with the values of the census conducted in permanent plots, which were close. Because of this work was a pilot sampling to test the method, the number of sampling units was low, compromising the analysis, so for the next studies it is already recommended that the sampling intensity is greater. The effectiveness of data gathering in the field, and the use of sampling line interception made it possible to get some results suggesting that the method is promising and is suitable for natural forest surveys. It is necessary to refine the method, and calibration in other physiognomies so that the estimates would be more accurate.

An overview of multilevel regression

Kaplan, Andrea Jean 21 February 2011 (has links)
Due to the inherently hierarchical nature of many natural phenomena, data collected rests in nested entities. As an example, students are nested in schools, school are nested in districts, districts are nested in counties, and counties are nested within states. Multilevel models provide a statistical framework for investigating and drawing conclusions regarding the influence of factors at differing hierarchical levels of analysis. The work in this paper serves as an introduction to multilevel models and their comparison to Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression. We overview three basic model structures: variable intercept model, variable slope model, and hierarchical linear model and illustrate each model with an example of student data. Then, we contrast the three multilevel models with the OLS model and present a method for producing confidence intervals for the regression coefficients. / text
