Master's Thesis describes topic of intergenerational communication, which is important part of society. It's goal is to suggest an effective communication strategy on workplace for managers. Each country perceives age differently; therefore the thesis is in general focused on Czech corporate environment. The theoretical part defines the concept of communication, internal communication of companies and communication styles of key generations of the late 20th century. The practical part includes questionnaire form with both open and closed questions and survey took place in selected organizations, operating in the Czech Republic.

The Stories We Tell: A Qualitative Inquiry to Multiracial Family Storytelling

A narrative inheritance is comprised of the stories told by family members that are received by a younger generation and used to help construct identity. According to the communication theory of identity, identity is formed through communication. Additionally, the storied resource perspective looks at narratives as a major method of creating and maintaining identity. This study looks at the kinds of narrative inheritance concerning race that people in multiracial families receive and possible ways it affects racial identity formation. Findings from 12 semi-structured interviews indicate that narratives of racism, cultural pride, and hardship are prevalent in multiracial families. Additionally, findings show that varying family structures may affect the transference of racial narratives between generations, which can in turn affect how multiracial children choose to identify themselves racially.

Intergenerational Communication Strategies for Generation X Supervisors

Millennials, who by 2024 will make up approximately 34% of the U.S. workforce, will play a critical role in organizational strategies and productivity, as will the supervisors who manage them. The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore the intergenerational communication strategies that Generation X supervisors used to motivate and engage high performing millennials in the workplace. The framework for this study was Mannheim's generation theory and the 2-factor theory of motivation by Herzberg, Mausner, and Snyderman. Data were collected from parks and recreation employees in the southeastern region of the United States, including 4 Generation X supervisors who completed semistructured interviews and 2 millennial cohort focus groups. Data were transcribed, coded, and validated through member checking and methodological triangulation. The 4 themes identified were culture and socialization, relationship building and intergenerational connectedness, employee growth and development, and rewards and recognition. The findings of this research may benefit millennials, frontline supervisors, parks and recreation agencies, and leaders in other organizations by providing an understanding of generational needs. The data presented in this study may support positive social change by showing that supervisors and millennial employees can build high quality relationships within their organizations, enabling those organizations to support the communities they serve.

The Canadian population is aging, as is the Canadian workforce. Today, four generations find themselves cohabiting in the workforce together. This may have an impact on workplace collaboration and communication, as both of these processes are influenced by group perceptions. Academic research has focused upon workplace interactions mainly from a younger worker’s perspective; hence, the older worker’s voice has been overlooked. The objective of this study is thereby from an older worker’s perspective, to understand how generations perceive each other in the workplace, and further, understand how these perceptions influence intergenerational communication and collaboration. To do so, we have relied upon Communication Accommodation Theory and Social Identity Theory, and have conducted a survey to measure the influence of ageist stereotypes on communication and its accommodation, in addition to such influences on knowledge transfer. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

The aim of the diploma thesis is to give a partial characterization of speech of several age groups: ninth grade students, people aged 19-24 years, people aged 44-50 years and people aged 65 or more years and also draw a comparison between them in certain areas. The thesis contains the theoretical part, which focuses on simple functional communication style in general, non-verbal communication elements, symptoms suprasegmental speech marks and vocabulary range. The practical part is divided into two chapters. The first one describes necessities and areas of research. The second one provides a summary of speech specifics of individual age groups and mutual comparison of them. The practical part focuses on expression quality, ie., accuracy and linguistic correctness. It is also focused on the periphery of the vocabulary range.
