Pragmatic Competence: The Case of Advice in Second Language Acquisition (SLA) Abroad

January 2011 (has links)
abstract: Using Spencer-Oatey's rapport management approach, the present study evaluates the interlanguage pragmatic development of 17 native English-speaking American learners over the course of a semester in Spain, specifically in terms of the strategies they used in their second language (L2) to manage rapport in an advice-giving, oral role-play situation at semester start and semester end. To allow for a more in-depth analysis of the effect that a semester abroad has on Spanish L2 advice-giving behaviors, the learners were grouped into two distinct proficiency levels. Group 1 (n=9) represents learners who entered the semester abroad with a beginning to intermediate-low proficiency level and group 2 (n=8) represents learners who entered the semester abroad with an intermediate-high proficiency level. The results indicate that both learner groups had similar overarching behavioral expectations in this context. Specifically, both sets of learners expressed empathy, involvement, and respect for the interlocutor, while at the same time they used advice-giving strategies of varied illocutionary force to claim authority in addressing the interlocutor's dilemma. Both groups also balanced face sensitivities through strategies that both enhanced and challenged the interlocutor's identity face. However, it is argued that in this context claiming authority and challenging the interlocutor's identity face were permitted behaviors that emphasized the relational goals of the participants. Additionally, when developmental differences between the two proficiency levels were analyzed, the results showed that learner proficiency had an impact on specific strategy choices. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.A. Spanish 2011

Given the fact that phraseological units are lexical items of difficult acquisition in a second language context, we adopted the collocations as an object of study to be highly productive and recurrent in oral and written production of native speakers. We intended to find out how the learners of Portuguese as an additional language use collocations in written texts and how this use betrays what we decided to call collocational competence. We chose to work with American subjects belonging to the FLTA program, linked to the Fulbright Commission, who promoted the English language in Brazil for a nine-month period in 2015. The subjects who were interested in participating in this study were grouped according to the level of proficiency and were asked to write texts in Portuguese, whose theme questionnaire was about their impressions of the Brazilian culture. Once written, the texts were analyzed and the collocations categorized according to the existing equivalence between target / mother language and according to their morphosyntactic structures. After we crossed the data, we found out that the B1 / B2 language system proficiency level is still dependent on the mother tongue, with "Total Equity" collocations presented in all types of morphosyntactic structures. The analysis of the C1 / C2 proficiency level group showed that they know and use a larger number of types of structures, while producing guided collocations in a direct relationship with the mother tongue. In addition, we conducted an analysis of collocational errors, whose results point to the fact that the linguistic transfer does not constitute the main factor to the process of fossilization. Besides, we also realized that the most advanced levels make more collocational errors as they were still testing hypotheses on language acquisition. We concluded by launching perspectives of continuity and possible contributions that this work offers to areas such as Applied Linguistics.

Ritos geneticos no mercado editorial : autoria e praticas de textualização / Publishing rites : autorship and textualization

It is probably possible to speak today of linguistic editorial practices and editorial linguistic practices. The former are a set of characteristics of a written text destined to be published ¿ this includes linguistic material demanding technical procedures such as cataloguing and normalizations, related to the support itself and its circulation. The latter, closely connected with the former, arose out of the development of linguistic theories in the 20th century as well as of the demand that took place regarding the formation of readers, the theories and practices that stemmed from such formation and the substantial multiplication of titles and writers. Considering such practices in their historical dynamics, this research is concentrated on the editorial practice that has contemplated reflections on reading and writing, and has thus oriented the treatment of texts to be published. In this editorial market, there is, to a certain extent, a new role, which includes several stages of work performed on the text that are still not clearly outlined or understood. This study focuses on one of those stages, taking it as a participant of the authoral process, which involves different agents and operations that seem to figure as a collective aspect of authorship. We understand this process as being typical of the current condition of editorial production: the author is summoned to an exercise of alterity made explicit in the texts, whose guidelines are related to the limitations and flexibilities of each publishing project ¿ an especially interesting moment to examine the relationships between discursive and textual practices / Doutorado / Doutor em Linguística

In this essay I discuss the concept of online collaborative teaching and learning by referring to two distinct contexts. The first one is the Galanet platform, maintained by European universities, which aims to encourage and develop a culture of mutual intelligibility between speakers of Romance languages as an alternative to the hegemony of English in communication amongst European citizens. The second one is the Busuu.com site that connects people around the world who are willing to teach and learn languages amongst themselves, without the intervention of tutors or professional moderators. In both cases, the most attractive characteristic of the environments is the possibility to interact with native speakers of the desired language. The corpus analyzed was generated in the form of records coming from the interactions of the researcher who participated in collaborative events in both platforms for a period of six months. The theoretical bases cover the concepts of mediation coming from different theoretical traditions, as well as a historical review of the concept of computer-mediated collaborative language learning. The conception of language is enunciative-discursive, based on the concepts of Bakhtinian dialogism, multilingualism, mutual understanding and discursive genre. The method employed was the Computer Mediated Discourse Analysis proposed by Suzan Herring. The research questions sought to be answered were: (i) What are the main differences and similarities between Busuu and Galanet in terms of technological and political-pedagogical mediations? And (ii) How does the Plurilingual Pedagogical Chat and Collaborative Chat in Pairs genres reflect these similarities and differences? The results showed that both platforms advances regarding the traditional language learning pedagogies, but are still below the dynamics of language learning and collaborative feature mediated by digital technologies, such as the development of Opens Source software / Mestrado / Linguagem e Educação / Mestra em Linguística Aplicada

Learning by Doing : Can Students Become More Proficient in Grammar Through Feedback by Underlining?

Jansson, Petra January 2006 (has links)
The aim of this paper was to investigate if students could become more proficient in their grammatical skills through feedback by underlining. The focus is on the problems students have with verbs when they learn English as a foreign language. 16 students from two different classes participated in the investigation. Eight of the students were interviewed on two occasions. They were shown essays they had written during the fall term of 2005. The teacher had underlined the errors they had made. During the interviews the students were asked to correct and explain the errors. The other eight students served as a control group since it could be suspected that the interviews might have an impact on the students’ performance. The results of this paper show that the students who were interviewed were able to correct most of the errors that had been underlined. The students in this group also seemed to improve more than the control group, but the results of this investigation are inconclusive, since the total number of errors made was fairly small. Therefore, it is difficult to determine how much the students improved their proficiency in English grammar.
