Voir, observer, penser : Virginia Woolf et la photo-cinématographie / Seeing, observing and thinking : Virginia Woolf and photo-cinematography

Cassigneul, Adèle 27 September 2014 (has links)
This study contends that Virginia Woolf's writing draws its inspiration from Julia Margaret Cameron's Victorian photographs, the 1920s avant-garde photography and cinema, and Woolf's own Monk's House Albums, making her work at once photographic and cinematographic, or photo-cinematographic. Exploring the Woolfian text as a complex representation device, I examine the plasticity of its prose and narrative strategies to show how photography and cinema help to shape its aesthetic, but also ethical and political contents. This thesis first places Woolf's works in their modernist context and underlines the part played by the Hogarth Press, enabling Woolf to include images in her texts. I then shed light on the kinematic aspect of her work by analysing the photo-filmic exploration of the London scene and the montage of stream of consciousness. The third part probes into the anachronic rhythm of fluctuating time, emphasising the haunting aspects of memory through surviving images that condense their temporality in the instant (snapshot) or unroll it (streaming images) ; thus time achieves a personal and intimate, but also collective and historical dimension. Finally, I look at the Woolfian text as a subversive place of negotiation inhabited by eccentric characters with elusive identities and in which images help the author to make a "poethical" stand.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Juliana Vilar Rodrigues Cardoso.pdf: 3687764 bytes, checksum: bc551d05b01bc005918918610d65d400 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2012-08-15 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The relationship between literature and the visual arts is very old and can be found in recreations such as the images made by Delacroix for Goethe s Faust and by Flaxman for Dante s The Divine Comedy. Lasar Segall s lithographs inspired by the short story A gentle creature, by Fyodor Dostoevsky, show that this relationship is still relevant in the twentieth century. The objective of this research is to analyse Dostoevsky s short story and Segall s lithographs and observe the language that each of these artists used to create characters who express their own inner world. Based on the concept of self-awareness developed by Mikhail Bakhtin, we will observe the construction of the short story s main character, which is a man who is distant from reality but finally realizes the truth about himself. We will also discuss the way in which Lasar Segall, who at the time was part of the German Expressionist movement, uses Dostoevsky s text to produce his lithographs, or more specifically, we will analyze the graphic elements used by him to convey the inner world of the characters and the tragic aspect found in the short story.

Media och materia : En intermedial studie av Metted Edvardsens föreställning Oslo / Media and matter : An intermedial study of the performance Oslo, by Mette Edvardsen

Lydahl, Karl January 2021 (has links)
This essay analyzes Mette Edvardsens performative work oslo, which usually falls under the label of dance and choreography. The performance is in many ways making use of and staging language though, so the aim here is to examine how the linguistic and textual material of the performance is enacted in relation to its mediating devices and vice versa. The essay is making use of the media theory by David J. Bolter and Richard A. Grusin to show that no medium stands by itself but always exists and works in a web-like relation to other medias. Language will therefore not be seen as isolated but always interacting with other mediating instances. Their theory will also stand as a base in trying to track different medias ideological origin. With inspiration from actor-network theory, this essay tries to map the performance as a network made up by components. The components will be understood, through material- semiotic theorists as Donna Haraway and Karen Barad, to exhibit agency. That is, they are seen to be doing something, they affect the network in a way which is beyond the control and possible intention by an author. The essay shows that Edvardsens performance is being enacted by its network, wherein the author or choreographer is one but not the only actor. The essay also examines how we come to understand a body or and object for what they are, how we define their borders, and will argue that borders are not static but are open for negotiation.

A stydu of the intermedial narrative of the metal band Vildhjartas conceptalbum Måsstaden under vatten

Ringmyr, Felix January 2023 (has links)
This essay aims to investigate intermedial studies and to analyze the intermedial narrative that appears out of the cooperation between music, lyrics and song cover of the Swedish progressive djent metal band Vildhjarta. The narrative that appears out of the intermedial cooperation between the medias is then analyzed with literal studies and narratological concepts to put intermedial studies into a bigger context. This essay also explores different intertextual connections to other works of literature which shows is quite a lot. Since previous research about progressive metal and the band Vildhjarta is practically nonexistent research from the closely related genres of black metal and death metal have been applied to create a new base of previous research. The research in this essay concludes that Vildhjarta, in sometimes complex ways, use different medias to create and amplify the narrative and they also include a lot of different intertextual connections.
