The following essay aims to examine the use of lyrical themes linked to religion. The music styles in focus in this study are death metal and melodic death metal in Sweden. The study is based on 14 Swedish bands that are or have been active during the last 30 years. In this study I ask which themes connected to religion are used in the lyrics from the middle of the 80’s till today and how the use of themes changes during this time period.       My hypothesis was that since metal’s function and purpose is to break boundaries and test the social limits the lyrics inevitably must change over time to continue to draw attention and provoke. The lyrics have been studied with qualitative text analysis and put in a timeline divided in four eras to see the changes over time and how they are expressed. Each era is divided into different categories and themes that are found in the lyrics.       This study shows that the lyrics in the chosen genres connected to religion change over time, in accordance with my hypothesis. The main lyrical themes are Satanism, Anti-religion and religion critics, Christian themes, Esoterism and mysticism and Mythology. The lyrical themes have changed from dealing primarily with Satanism and anti-Christianity/religion in the 80’s and early 90’s to more complex lyrics about esoterism, mysticism, spiritism, and mythology today.

Det är svårt att sätta ord på vad man menar när man pratar om musik. Jag är intresserad av varför det sällan går att finna definitioner av genrer när diskussionen om dem är så stark, speciellt när det gäller snarlika genrer som troligtvis är uppdelade av en eller flera anledningar. Syftet med min undersökning är att utveckla vidare kunskap om vilken betydelse det har att skilja på två snarlika subgenrer inom samma metagenre. Jag undersöker därför hur två snarlika genrer definieras och jämför dem sedan och prövar om det är av betydelse att undersöka flera aspekter av en musikgenre. Tidigare forskning föreslår att den musikaliska stilen borde undersökas likväl som kulturen och andra aspekter. En stark diskussion pågår just inom heavy metalscenen om subgenrerna inom den, därför undersöker jag subgenrerna death- och black metal. I denna undersökning använder jag Fabbris mall för genredefinition, där undersöks formella och tekniska regler, semiotiska regler, regler för beteende, sociala och ideologiska regler samt ekonomiska och juridiska regler. Reglerna har jag undersökt genom att lyssna på fonogram, titta på videoinspelningar av liveframträdande och publik samt hur aktörer inom scenerna beter sig när de inte är på scen. Jag har även analyserat låttexter och använt mig av diverse litteratur och dokumentärfilmer. Mitt resultat visar att det finns betydande anledningar till att skilja på death metal och black metal trots att de musikaliskt liknar varandra.

This paper explores the dynamics of two regional heavy metal styles. It focuses on the aesthetics of Florida death metal and Norwegian black metal. This paper seeks to contribute but also deviate from the great studies linking music with cultural studies. Heavy metal has gained international attention from many social leaders concerned with the direction of its listeners. Heavy metal, from its early foundation, has been used to rebel against social order. As the music evolves, it becomes dangerous to the social establishment; challenging ideologies such as religion, globalization, feminism and common decency. This paper seeks to tell the story of the battle between hegemony and the subversive subculture of intense metal, giving voice to some truly disturbed individuals dissatisfied with the existing social institution. In doing so, I hope this study serves as model for future studies of radical youth culture.

Syftet med detta arbete var att undersöka olika sound inom genren death metal. Genren har präglats av olika ljudbilder sett ur ett geografiskt spridningsperspektiv och sedan di- versifierats stilistiskt under åren som gått. Genom analys av olika metalbands låtar iden- tifierades sex olika sound som återspeglade olika perioder och stilistiska trender. I stu- dien undersöktes hur dessa sound kan uppnås genom mixning och vad som eventuellt särskiljer de olika sounden från varandra. Hela arbetet baserades på en inspelning av två egenskrivna låtar som agerade utgångspunkt för mixningen. Inspelningen behövde vara så musikaliskt bred som möjligt för att kunna fånga många olika sound. Med utgångs- punkt i inspelningen mixades de båda låtarna utifrån analys utförd med hjälp av olika referenslåtar. Olika element hämtades från dessa referenslåtar för att skapa en helhet som fångade det specifika sound som skulle efterliknas. Trots god planering och analys, före genomförandet av inspelningen, så visade sig tekniska och musikaliska brister som skulle komma att inverka på arbetet. Resultatet blev inte helt optimalt då specifik utrust- ning, som skulle krävts för att åstadkomma det bästa resultatet för alla sound, inte fanns tillgänglig under arbetets gång. Flera nya insikter har gett perspektiv på det egna arbetet och brister i det egna arbetssättet. Insikter betydelsefulla för att komma närmre ett speci- fikt death metal-sound.

Using a method of reflexive ethnography, this thesis deals with a question of masculinity performace in the Czech extreme metal milieu (to be specific I am concerned with the brutal death metal and related sub-genres). Participants of the brutal death metal subculture either in the position of performers or audience are with a very few exceptions men. Brutality, harshness, extremeness and other values are the main aesthetic criteria, which - as we can observe while doing the research - the participants connect with a coherent collection of ideas about a certain ideal of dominant manhood. To achieve these values to the greatest extent possible the musicians use particular musical features and topics of the compositions; and so does both the musicians and the audience via their visual image, with using specific kind of behaviour and having fixed movements and dancing during the music production. On the basis of an analysis of these values and means of their manifestation I am concerned with the question of what specific characteristics the masculine identity, which is performed in the given subculture, has. My research data show that these are: 1) mutual affinity with the other participants, 2) power as an ability of an aggressive attack as well as one's own endurance, and 3) coarseness, lack of...

This essay aims to investigate intermedial studies and to analyze the intermedial narrative that appears out of the cooperation between music, lyrics and song cover of the Swedish progressive djent metal band Vildhjarta. The narrative that appears out of the intermedial cooperation between the medias is then analyzed with literal studies and narratological concepts to put intermedial studies into a bigger context. This essay also explores different intertextual connections to other works of literature which shows is quite a lot. Since previous research about progressive metal and the band Vildhjarta is practically nonexistent research from the closely related genres of black metal and death metal have been applied to create a new base of previous research. The research in this essay concludes that Vildhjarta, in sometimes complex ways, use different medias to create and amplify the narrative and they also include a lot of different intertextual connections. / Den här uppsatsen undersöker det narrativ som uppstår i det intermediala samspelet mellan musik, låttext och låtomslag. Narrativet undersöks sedan med hjälp av litteraturvetenskapliga och narratologiska begrepp för att sätta in den intermediala analysen i ett större kontextualiserande perspektiv. I uppsatsen undersöks även intertextuella kopplingar och det framkommer flera referenser och kopplingar till andra litterära verk. Då forskningsläget kring genren men även bandet i princip är icke existerande har i stället forskning om black metal och death metal använts för att skapa ett användbart forskningsläge. I resultatet framkommer det att Vildhjarta på ett komplext vis använder olika medier för att skapa och förstärka narrativet men även att de olika låtarna innehåller mängder med intertextuella kopplingar.

This study focuses on Black Metal and Death Metal music as complimentary forms of commodified evil, which, in contrast to most other forms of commodified evil, provide an alternative form of modern escapism. In particular, it demonstrates that in glorifying evil their respective natures and essences effectively suggest to us that the ability to overcome our problems, and cope with the world's atrocities, lies not in the vain hope that justice will prevail, but rather, in embracing evil and actively cultivating a desensitizing ethos of utter indifference to the plight and suffering of others. In addition, because Black Metal and Death Metal have both generated their own distinct sub-cultures, which are predominantly populated by marginalized youths, this study simultaneous begs the question: What is it that motivates them to produce and/or endorse forms of music, and thereby become members of sub-cultures, which ostensibly promote such a negative world view? Consequently, it also demonstrates some of the important ways in which they can serve to help their proponents regain a sense of power and control over their lives. It then concludes by looking at Black Metal and Death Metal's (potential) social effects - both negative and positive.

Syftet med den här uppsatsen var att vidga förståelsen av hur musikgenren death metal samspelar med scener från skräckfilm. För att metodiskt genomföra detta skapades fyra gestaltningar där musikstycken av sagda genre spelas ihop med fyra filmscener. Dessa gestaltningar analyserades och visades för fem informanter i samband med att de blev intervjuade. Resultatet indikerar på att genren deathmetal samspelar med sagda gestaltningar likt traditionell filmmusik. Resultatet indikerar även på att detta samspel uppfattas snarlikt oberoende på informanternas erfarenhet av musikgenren.
