Mauricio, Ana Cecilia 10 April 2018 (has links)
This article presents evidence of a mega Niño event that transpired around ca. 600 d.C. recovered at the archaeological site of Huaca 20-Complejo Maranga and discusses the human eco-dynamics that could have happened at the end of the Early Intermediate Period in this site and other settlements of the Lima Valleys. is information is compared with contemporary data from the North Coast. I propose that this period of environmental stress could have signied a time of opportunities for some societies of the Early Intermediate Period.

Cornejo, Miguel 10 April 2018 (has links)
Priests and Weavers in the Inka Province of PachacamacBy following the principle that offerings, accompanying the dead, can be used effectively to determine the former occupation the deceased, we can extend our knowledge of the social organisation of the Province of  Pachacamac. The meaning of offerings in terms of level of social status and occupation is interpreted by artifacts which probably belonged the deceased, including those which would include personal items and the tools of the trade, both of which would confirm what kind of social status the deceased enjoyed and what trade he or she pursued. This suits particularly well if the tools and other instruments for specific tasks show signs of wear and if there are half-finished products, such as textiles or nets. In this article I want to identify aspects concerning two specialists groups: the priests and weavers.

Carcedo, Paloma, Vetter, Luisa, Diez Canseco, Magdalena 10 April 2018 (has links)
Anthropomorphic Effigy Vases: A Silvermith’s Production during the Late Intermediate Period and Late HorizonAnthropomorphic effigy vases have been classified, without any scientific basis, as belonging to the Chimu Culture. This investigation shows how these kinds of vases are more related in iconography as well as in provenance with the iconography of the central coast of Peru. In a selection of nine vases analysed, we determine different techniques of manufacture, which indicate the high technological complexity achieved by the precolumbian metal smiths during the Late Intermediate period and the Late Horizon. This study seeks to clarify, with the help of historic and ethnographic documentation, the social importance of the silversmith’s workshops that elaborated the effigy vases in question. We hope through the study of these archaeological remains and their comparison with historical texts, to decipher the symbolic and ritual value, as well as possible religious influences in their manufacture along the Peruvian coast. Finally, the possible process used by the coastal metal smiths in the manufacture of the effigy vases was identified by means of electronic microscope and metalographic analysis.

The early Lima occupation of Pachacamac: a view of the origins of the Templo Viejo / La ocupación Lima Temprano en Pachacamac: una mirada a partir de los orígenes del Templo Viejo

Franco Jordán, Régulo G. 10 April 2018 (has links)
The archaeological excavations carried out by the Wiese Foundation at the Templo Viejo, Pachacamac (1986-1990), considered as one of the ancient oracles of the Lima culture, produced valuable information about this old building concerning to its ceremonial spaces, constructive phases, environmental impacts, and associated ceramics. Based on this evidence, it is assumed that during the Early Intermediate Period, the Templo Viejo became the major ceremonial building of Pachacamac and the center of the political and religious entity of the Lurín Valley. Judging from the remains found in dense middens located nearby this building, it seems that adverse environmental conditions characterized the Early Lima phase. During this time, there was a high consumption of food as result of the rituals and ceremonies taking placehere, perhaps this temple received pilgrims from the Lurín and Rímac Valleys because Pachacamac was already recognized the most important oracle of the Lima culture. During the Middle Horizon Pachacamac consolidated its reputation over larger areas of the Andes.

Desrosiers, Emilie 01 1900 (has links)
This research focuses on the reconstruction of diet using a chemical approach. Carbon and nitrogen isotopes were analyzed on a bone collagen sample of thirty-eight individuals from three different sites of the Lower Santa valley, on the north coast of Peru : El Castillo, Guadalupito and Huaca China. Among those individuals selected, some are affiliated with groups of Gallinazo, Moche, Tanguche and Chimu, dated to the Ancient Intermediate Period, Middle Horizon and Recent Intermediate Period. The isotopic approach has been used to characterize in a first step, the diet of the entire population by comparing with some other prehispanic groups from the Andean area. The results of thirty-two individuals suggest a mixed diet including maize and marines resources, showing that these agriculturist groups exploited their surrounding ecosystems. These results are supported by the carbon analysis on bone apatite for five individuals. The second aim was to study the variability of the diet between individuals in the sample, depending on the time period, site, cultural identity, age and sex and social status. The small sample size has considerably limited the discussion of these parameters. However, it was possible to note a more preferential access to high proteins resources for men and some possible differences in diet among juveniles. Finally, the comparison between dietary reconstruction and funerary patterns was made for five cases of burial pratices at El Castillo site, the first Moche regional center in the Lower Santa valley. In all cases, diet suggested by isotopic compositions is consistent with interpretations of the funerary context about the individual status.

The importance of the sea in Lima religion: an interdisciplinary proposal / La importancia del mar en la religión de la cultura Lima. Una propuesta interdisciplinaria

Vargas Nalvarte, Pedro 10 April 2018 (has links)
This article proposes the existence of a cult dedicated to a female sea deity on the Central Coast of Peru during the Early Intermediate Period (200-700 AD). This research is based on archaeological evidence of ritual activity as well as ethnohistoric, ethnographic, and linguistic data that supports the proposal. A goddess of the sea, with a court of marine life, linked to the feminine aspects of the cosmos could have had Huaca Pucllana as one of its centers of worship, with the abundance of figurative and symbolic marine representations, as well as the evidence for the social role of women and the importance of marine resources. It is worth noting that this cult somehow managed to transcend the decline of Limaculture and achieve cultural permanence into the Middle Horizon.
