Mapeando os caminhos da internacionalização de instituições de ensino superior no Brasil / Mapping the path of internationalization of higher education institutions in Brazil

Souza, Eduardo Pinheiro de 16 December 2008 (has links)
This study aims the comprehension of the internationalization process of Brazilian higher education institutions (HEI). As a part of a globalized world dependent on knowledge workforce to face increasing competition among countries and companies, HEI play an important role in grooming highly skilled people and providing knowledge to build up the countries innovation systems. The results reported draw on a multi-case study involving exploratory and qualitative research to investigate four Brazilian HEI and their different ways of internationalization, namely: i) international agreements at University of Sao Paulo (USP); ii) the acquisition of equity stake in the New College of California (NCC) by the University Center of Campo Grande (UNAES); iii) the acquisition of equity stake in the Anhembi Morumbi University (UAM) by Laureate Education, Inc.; and iv) joint venture between Kroton Educational and Apollo International to fund Pitagoras Faculty and also international agreements with other universities. The analysis of data collected by means of document analysis, focused interviews and direct observation rests on theoretical propositions to organize evidences in an attempt to answer the research questions. Since HEI internationalization is a complex phenomenon, the analysis involves three sets of concepts from different theoretical backgrounds, namely: i) concepts of HEIs internationalization and globalization, as suggested by multilateral organizations such as OECD, UNESCO and World Bank; ii) concepts of internationalization of companies, as found in Rugman & Verbekes economic approach; and iii) concepts developed within the domain of International Higher Education. The results presented by this study indicate the main elements that characterize how the analyzed HEI internationalization process occurred, such as: i) developing a strategic vision envisaging concepts emphasized by multilateral organizations; ii) building organizational competences in line with the nature of both private and public HEI and their planned or current mobility practices (of institutions, programs, and scholars); iii) exploiting specific advantages offered either in Brazil or in the countries for HEIs international activities; and iv) articulating management practices of transnational and academic education.

To achieve the proposed goals and respond to the research problem, we used a quantitative research methodology, specifically a survey of executives of multinational companies in the sector. From the universe of 450 companies, suppliers of the automotive industry, 78 questionnaires were obtained. Due to the existence of multiple variables, we used the structural equation model to analyze the data. The results show that a global CSR strategy has positive influences on the performance of CSR, since the adoption of a local strategy shows no significant results due to lack of commitment to engagement with stakeholders.

Overcoming intercultural communication barriers : Organisational Culture and Organisational Learning within a Swedish Textile Company / Overcoming intercultural communication barriers : Organisational Culture and Organisational Learning within a Swedish Textile Company

PODLESNY, PAULINE ANNA, ELZE, JENNIFER January 2014 (has links)
This thesis attempts to discover what actions are necessary to mitigate these problems within textile companies. Theories on organisational culture, organisational learning, and international management, were addressed in relation to intercultural communication. Using an exemplifying case of one single person within Eton AB, a case study research design was conducted. The data was collected through a qualitative research strategy and method, using self-completion/self-administrative questionnaires, and analysed using grounded theory. The general result of the thesis indicates that few communication errors between Eton AB and the participant exist. Therefore this interrelation can be seen as a positive example of intercultural communication within a textile company. In this context, it was the authors’ intention to identify the influence organisational culture and organisational learning have on intercultural communication. Certain aspects within an organisational culture are of importance to create a better integration of employees, hence influence intercultural relations positively. Organisational learning, likewise, has a positive impact, since it contributes to the creation of a better environment for integration. This thesis concludes with generalised measures which can be seen as a guideline and as first steps for textile companies in order to reduce intercultural communication errors. / Program: Textile Management, textile value chain management

Expatriates' Acculturation Strategies: Going Beyond "How Adjusted Are You?" To "How Do You Adjust?"

Lineberry, Matthew 01 January 2012 (has links)
Expatriates' degree of adjustment to living and working in a foreign country is well-accepted as an important outcome variable in expatriate management research. However, measures of degree of adjustment do not capture the breadth of strategies expatriates may use to achieve such adjustment, which may be critical for understanding whether expatriates have achieved a healthy and productive orientation to life abroad. Borrowing from research on immigrant populations, this study examines the construct of expatriate acculturation strategies, which characterize expatriates' mode of adjustment along two independent dimensions reflecting maintenance of one's home culture and engagement of the host culture, respectively. One hundred U.S. expatriates were recruited and completed an index of acculturation strategies. In addition, participants completed survey and reaction-time based measures of proposed antecedents, correlates, and outcomes of varying acculturation strategies. Results suggest that expatriates largely pursue either a maintenance-focused or engagement-focused strategy and that acculturation strategies are not redundant with degree of adjustment. Relationships between acculturation strategies and relevant individual differences, characteristics of expatriate positions, and outcomes are discussed.

Neuwirthová, Magda January 2010 (has links)
Dealing with the subject of multiculturalism, this dissertation thesis investigates the elements of Japanese, Korean, and American national mentalities in the management of companies located in the Czech Republic. The main goal of this thesis is to identify these elements in corporate culture, find out, which of them lead to the most conflict situations, and suggest procedures to identify and eliminate resulting problems. On a more general level, this thesis provides basic characteristics of business environment and the approaches of world philosophers, anthropologists and sociologists. This thesis further identifies specific multicultural elements in organizations, and suggests its own model of multicultural corporate identity and a model for the identification of conditions that, when fulfilled, lead to strong corporate identity. This thesis also characterizes Czech cultural environment and compares it with that of Japan, Korea and the USA, based on surveys of well recognized Czech sociologists. The main emphasis of this thesis lies on the examination of corporate identity of American, Japanese, and Korean management. Based on a questionnaire survey, four major conflict areas of investigated cultures are identified. These are different opportunities within the company, non-economic use of time, the way of managing company meetings, and the way individual work is presented. In the last section of the thesis, possible solutions to these conflicts situations are provided.
