UNDERSTANDING WHY INTERNATIONAL STUDENT APPLICANTS CHOOSE A PUBLIC FOUR-YEAR INSTITUTIONDarby, Mark Gene 01 March 2015 (has links)
The purpose of Understanding Why International Student Applicants Choose a Public Four-Year Institution was to apply a mixed-methods research approach to California State University, San Bernardino’s (CSUSB) international student population to better understand the factors associated with an international student’s decision-making processing to study abroad.
Internationalization by institutions reflects the current two million international students studying around the world. In recent years internationalization has become more of an economic driving force, whereas in the past it was an opportunity for diversifying knowledge and research. Studies on push and pull factors reflect reasons why international students have decided to go abroad. Factors range from lack of access at home institutions for various programs to the desire to learn about Western culture. Seeing as the population of these studies is so diverse ethnically and culturally, it is important to be mindful of the various forms of capital students possess as an international student and the uniqueness this brings to each students experience.
A questionnaire was utilized to gather quantitative data to provide descriptive statistics of the population, and interviews were conducted with participants to acquire the rich stories. The questionnaire submissions resulted in 52 returned surveys for a response rate of five percent. Six interviews were conducted, which provided a diverse group of international student representation for the analysis of the rich text allowing for a strong understanding of this specific case study.
Based on the interviews conducted, responses reflected many of those that previous studies found. All but one interviewee mentioned the costs of attending as a deciding factor. Reputation of the institution and prestige of a US degree were also factors mentioned by the majority of participants. Both participants from African countries mentioned a lack of program availability as a reason to go abroad, while both Indian participants mentioned the desire to work after graduating for experience before returning home. Interestingly, most participants mentioned a connected family member to either the institution itself or the state of California as a reason for choosing CSUSB.
The data that were collected for the purposes of this study did show some correlation to previous studies findings. The qualitative data proved useful in better understanding the needs of specific students, while also alluding to potential geographic considerations that need to be had when recruiting abroad and meeting the needs of international students around the world.

International Student Participation in Postsecondary U.S. English Language ProgramsColon, Valeriana 01 January 2018 (has links)
Postsecondary English language education is a growing industry in the United States. While there has been considerable research on international student mobility in higher education, there is limited research on the population’s participation in U.S. English language programs (ELPs). The purpose of the study was to apply existing theories and data analysis to understand postsecondary English language program participation and create a foundation for future studies. This exploratory study examined the characteristics of international students enrolled in U.S. postsecondary ELPs. The researcher investigated the relationship between ELP enrollment with U.S. higher education enrollment as well as the relationship between ELP enrollment by destination location, ELP provider type, gender and country of origin. Finally, the researcher analyzed the completion rate of international students in U.S. postsecondary ELPs by gender and country of origin. Data from 2004-2014 were collected from the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System and the Institute of International Education’s Open Doors Report. Data analysis was conducted through quantitative methods. Findings of this study may help educators reflect on the form and function of current English language programs to improve the quality of future ELPs.

同儕師徒制與國際學生在台學習及適應之研究 / Peer mentorship and international student adjustment to life and studies in Taiwan喬笆蒂, Jobarteh, Fatou Unknown Date (has links)
This research explored the relationship between peer mentorship and international student adjustment to life and studies in Taiwan. Questionnaires were drafted and sent to participants via email, and physically. The hypotheses explored the relationship between peer mentorship and international student adjustment to life and studies in Taiwan; informal peer mentorship vs. higher mentorship functions/satisfaction; and Taiwanese peer mentors vs. higher mentorship functions/satisfaction. Independent samples Tests were used to test the hypotheses. However, the test results did not accept any of the proposed hypotheses. Perhaps peer mentorship is not positively related to international adjustment, or perhaps the research is missing something.

Hur ser ledarskapet i klassrummet ut?

The determinants of internationalstudent mobility : An empirical study on U.S. DataLiu, Dong, Wang, Jing January 2009 (has links)
The increase in foreign students in countries such as the US, the UK and Francesuggests that the international ‘education industry’ is growing in importance. Thepurpose of this paper is to investigate the empirical determinants of internationalstudent mobility. A secondary purpose is to give tentative policy suggestions to hostcountry, source country and also to provide some recommendations to students whowant to study abroad. Using pooled cross-sectional time series data for the US overthe time period 1993-2006, we estimate an econometric model of enrolment rates offoreign students in the US. Our results suggest that tuition fees, US federal support ofeducation, and the size of the ‘young’ generation of source countries have asignificant influence on international student mobility. We also consider other factorsthat may be relevant in this context.

Study on Architecture-Oriented International Student Care and Management ModelWang, Yih-ping 20 August 2012 (has links)
According to the Department of Statistic, there are 163 existing Universities, Colleges and Institutes with 1,352,084 students in the 100th academic year. Under the trend of globalization, Taiwan¡¦s society and high education are facing an enormous change. And as to dealing with those changes Taiwan has to rely on the globalized higher education system to accomplish. Therefore, to expend recruiting aboard students is the key of success for Ministry of Education to enhance the development of globalizing higher education. However, Taiwan is a late bloomer on globalizing the higher education and English is the second language to us. Therefore, problems are generated when working on recruiting international students. As the matter of the fact, the matters of caring and managing international students appear to be essential.
This study constructs an architecture-oriented international student management model (AOISCM) using the structure-behavior coalescence architecture description language (SBC-ADL). AOISCM is an international student centered blueprint which includes six fundamental diagrams: architecture hierarchy diagram, framework diagram, component operation diagram, component connection diagram, structure-behavior coalescence diagram, and interaction flow diagram. Comparing with existing international student care and management model from various kinds of views, all results demonstrate that AOISCM is superior to the existing model.
AOISCM covers the organization structure and caring behavior. By this model we are able to see the relationship between international students and the universities, and show the whole picture of the caring and managing international students. Therefore, using AOISCM on caring and managing international students will help universities to meet the high proficiency on reaching an agreement on international student¡¦s communication. Last and not least, AOISCM shall clarify the duties for each divisions and flexible sources allocation for office executives.

The potential influence of international student-teaching practicums in the preparation of preservice teachersWiebe, Ryan 06 September 2012 (has links)
Recent trends in immigration in Manitoba and across Canada mean increasing classroom cultural diversity in all levels of the education system. In response to these trends, faculties of Education have tried a variety of ways to better prepare preservice teachers for this increasing classroom cultural diversity. An opportunity provided for preservice teachers in many teacher preparation programs is the chance to participate in international student-teaching practicums. This qualitative case study research explored the potential influence of the Elmwood international student-teaching practicum located in South-east Asia. The results shed light on the influence that personal dispositions have in the overall experiences and perceptions of the practicum participants. The study showed that international student-teaching practicums provide a variety of potentially challenging and valuable experiences. The study concludes with the claim that critically oriented parallel programming and supervision is necessary in the attempt to ensure that these experiences result in the positive personal and professional identity development in those involved.

A Matter of Choice- Tertiary Student Term Time Employment: An Investigation of New Zealand Domestic and Chinese International StudentsWang, Xiaofeng January 2011 (has links)
Term time employment of tertiary students has increased dramatically following funding policy changes in the global Higher Education sector. Taking a comparative approach, this study of students at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand, investigates the decision to work during the academic term, the characteristics of such employment, and the perceived impacts on the university experiences of New Zealand domestic and Chinese international students.
The study revealed similarities and differences between the two largest student populations. Compared to their New Zealand peers, Chinese international students are less likely to take term time employment. Among those who have worked, New Zealand domestic students do so for financial reasons, while Chinese international students value the work experience in the host country. Chinese international students receive much lower wages and tend to have shorter employment durations. In terms of perceived impacts, both New Zealand domestic and Chinese international students express a generally positive attitude towards their employment decisions, with a limited but clear awareness of the negative impacts. Interestingly, for those who have never worked, Chinese international students indicate a much stronger willingness to join the student workforce in the future. New Zealand domestic students, however, are much less likely to work if they can afford not to.
This research provides empirical information about international students’ term time employment in the New Zealand context. Specific advice and mentoring services are needed at both university and government levels to provide ‘a more safe and supportive’ employment environment, especially for international students.
