The Map and The Territory: Russian Social Media Networks and Society

Alexanyan, Karina January 2013 (has links)
This dissertation uses Russian social media as a lens for exploring the historically, culturally, socially and politically situated relationship between individuals and online communication technologies. I propose a framework for comparative international analysis that leverages three interconnected elements – history, network structure and media ecology. On the basis of these three elements, this dissertation examines Russia’s social media ecology and its relationship to Russia’s broader socio-political environment, articulating the various factors that have influenced the specific network structure and nature of social media in Russia, its role within the broader online and traditional media ecologies, and its implications for Russian society and politics in general. In the first part, I outline the features of Russia’s distinct social media ecology, and examine the various historic and social factors that have shaped its evolution, highlighting the implications of the intertwined development of the Internet and social media in Russia. In the second section, I present the findings of my case study of the network structure of Russian social media, examining the culture of Russia’s online social networks and providing a detailed analysis of the network structure and patterns of attention in Russian social media between 2009- 2010. In the final section, I consider these findings within the broader context of Russia’s media ecology, highlighting the distinction between “Internet Russia” and “TV Russia” and evaluating the role of Russian social media networks in offline action, particularly the tumultuous events of 2012. Russian social media networks are not a microcosm, reflection or “map” of Russian society. They are created and pursued by an as yet elite, but growing, segment of the population - active and engaged social media users for whom the relatively uncensored Internet serves not only as an independent source of information, but, more significantly, as an avenue for interpersonal connection and communication. Civil participation in Russia, I conclude, has its roots in these interpersonal social networks. My historically, socially and culturally rooted exploration of Russian social media ecology recognizes it as an interpersonal space as well as a public sphere, highlighting the communication and coordination aspect of social media, as much as the informational one. This approach explains the immediate success, “like a fish to water,” of LiveJournal’s social network based blogging platform in Russia, and provides a foundation for understanding the unique structure and nature of Russian social media networks. Finally, it offers context and insight for a more nuanced understanding of the offline social and political ramifications of social media in Russia, as well as a matrix for cross cultural comparison.

Alvarado Campos de Gozzer, Lizbeth 12 February 2018 (has links)
Internet has allowed academic publishers to internationalize their catalogs in a faster and easier way, digitalizing their production and using digital communication. In this context, the communications area of PUCP University Press has new possibilities to make its contents more visible and closer to their audience. With that purpose, we have developed a Communication and Marketing Plan based on Integrated Marketing Communications Theory, in which we use a set of strategies and actions in order to increase the visibility and accessibility of our catalog, locally and internationally. / Tesis

Censorship in cyberspace: accommodation and resistance among Chinese netizens.

January 2012 (has links)
In January, 2010, the biggest internet search engine, Google, announced its potential exodus from the Chinese market due to China’s practice of censorship. Many foreign commentators have criticized China’s practice of censorship. But what are the views of Chinese citizens? This research focuses on a special group of Chinese netizens called “returnees“ [overseas Chinese who are living in between China and elsewhere], who have experienced both the domestic and overseas cyber-worlds. Through studying their perspectives on censorship, this research seeks to understand how those who have lived outside China understand internet censorship within China. / Some informants view internet censorship as a negative intrusion and a representation of an untruthful government while others consider it as a necessity in managing China’s cyberspace due to the special cultural context of Chinese society. Though their perceptions vary, my informants expressed a paradoxical nationalism, defending a government they felt ashamed of; this was expressed repeatedly during interviews. In this thesis, by bringing censorship and nationalism together, I analyze in depth my informants’ paradoxical and conflicting attitude toward these two concepts, in order to better understand Chinese censorship and how it may be justified. I argue that by defending censorship, my informants’ Chinese identities have been reinforced. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Chang, Xinyue. / Thesis (M.Phil.)--Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2012. / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 156-165). / Abstracts also in Chinese. / Abstract --- p.i / Chapter Chapter 1. --- Introduction --- p.1 / Introduction: “The Google-China Affair“ --- p.2 / Chinese Returnees --- p.4 / TheNascent Public Sphere, Censorship, and the Google-China Affair --- p.5 / AnHistorical Perspective --- p.13 / Methodology --- p.21 / Chapter Breakdown --- p.24 / Chapter Chapter2. --- Literature Review --- p.26 / The Anthropology of Cyberspace --- p.26 / China’s Cyberspace --- p.36 / Nationalismand Chinese Nationalism --- p.39 / Chapter Chapter3. --- The Google-China Affair --- p.53 / TheSage of Google and China --- p.58 / Reviewing the Saga through the Eyes of Chinese Returnees --- p.63 / Follow-Up --- p.77 / Conclusion --- p.77 / Chapter Chapter4. --- Freedom of Information --- p.79 / Universal Human Rights vs. Cultural Relativism --- p.79 / Individual Agency vs. State Control --- p.85 / Market Domination vs. State Control --- p.90 / The Concept of Rationality --- p.92 / Responses to Moral Discipline --- p.97 / Conclusion --- p.101 / Chapter Chapter5. --- Freedom of Speech --- p.103 / Freedom in Relation to Speech --- p.105 / Twitter and Sina Weibo --- p.109 / Liu Xiaobo --- p.116 / Ai Weiwei --- p.119 / The Chinese Jasmine Movement --- p.122 / Conclusion --- p.124 / Chapter Chapter6. --- Conclusion: Censorship and Chinese Nationalism --- p.129 / The Conundrum of Self-Flagellating National Pride --- p.130 / Repressive Hypothesis --- p.136 / Presentation of Self and Rituals of Rebellion --- p.141 / Collective Memory Construction --- p.149 / Conclusion: Censorship and Nationalism --- p.151 / Bibliography --- p.156

This PhD research is related to teaching and learning mathematics with a view in "experiences" in an introduction to Differential and Integral Calculus and its applications course offered to the Biological Sciences undergraduate course of Universidade Estadual Paulista - Rio Claro Campus. As a support to the classes, the researcher developed a website with the content of the syllabus which was widely used during the classes. The research started qualitative, focusing on the potential of digital technologies in school education. But in the progress of its development, it was building up from the clues of cartography, and therefore digital technology was no longer the focus of research, giving rise to questioning teaching and learning mathematics. In this work, teachers and students are understood not as active subjects and responsible for the educational process, but as subjects of experience. Subjects who suffer and expose their bodies to meetings. In this way, the learning and teaching referred here are closer to the exercise of potentiate the ability to affect and be affected by each encounter. It is, therefore, a learning that has nothing to do with developing skills or acquiring knowledge. Similarly, a teaching that has nothing to do with transmitting, mediating, facilitating or sharing knowledge. It is a teaching and a learning that are not owned by anyone and only make sense in the current events.

Cezario, Natalia Trevisan. January 2011 (has links)

Method: This is a cross-sectional study, with a sample of students aged 14 to 20 years as the target population. The sample selection was performed in a random way, in order to be representative of the 4083 students enrolled in the institution. Internet addiction was assessed through the Internet Addiction Test (IAT). Presence of anxiety and / or depressive disorders was studied with the Well-Being Index (WHO-5). Results: The prevalence of internet addiction was 50.6%, being higher among individuals who presented positive screening for depressive or anxious disorders than among those who did not. There was an association between internet addiction and use of games. There was a tendency for the association between work / study-related access content and the presence of internet dependence. Conclusion: Further studies are needed to confirm the high prevalence of Internet addiction and to explore the characteristics of this phenomenon. The association of this dependence with positive screening for anxiety and / or depression makes it important to implement measures such as psychoeducation and the availability of treatment.
