A QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITATIVE STUDY OF REQUIRED INTERNSHIPS: THE STUDENTS’ PERSPECTIVEJames, Elizabeth Ann 01 January 2018 (has links)
Internships are increasingly popular in higher education (Coco, 2000; Divine et al., 2007). One reason for the increase is the benefits, both perceived and documented, associated with them (Divine et al., 2007). In addition to offering internships as electives, some programs have even begun requiring them of all students (Klein & Weiss, 2011). The policy change from elective to required internships has been evaluated very little, if at all, even though mandatory internships result in a substantial increase in cost and commitment for the departments that implement them (Divine et al., 2007).
This study analyzed survey and interview data from students (past and present) who participated in a required internship through an Equine Science and Management degree program at a major land grant institution that adopted a mandatory internship requirement in 2007. The intent of the study was to deepen the understanding of the effects of a mandatory internship policy in higher education from the students’ perspective. Specifically of interest were the benefits students gain from participating in mandatory internships, their perception of the mandatory internship policy, and whether the primary reason students participated in an internship influenced the experience. A mixed-methods approach was used to identify statistically significant results and provide an in-depth understanding of the results.
This study revealed that the vast majority of students who participated in a mandatory internship recognized a variety of benefits from it, viewed the experience as beneficial, and supported the policy of requiring internships. It was demonstrated that mandatory internships can empower students and aid in their professionalization. Participants also credited their internship more than their overall undergraduate experience for better preparing them at several important career skills including problem solving, job interviewing, networking, resume writing, oral presentation, interpersonal communication, and written communication. Furthermore, this study identified several statistically significant relationships between the primary reason students participated in an internship and how beneficially they view it, how much they believe it contributed to their current job, and how well it prepared them at specific career skills. The results of this study provide insight into the benefits of a mandatory internship policy from the students’ perspective.

Transfer Student Experiences at a Four-Year UniversityStewart-Hattar, Virginia Kay 01 December 2016 (has links)
In recent years attention has been concentrated on the experiences of traditional college students, with very little research or attention on the experiences of transfer students. The purpose of this causal comparative mixed-methods study was to describe the experiences of transfer students who engage in the experiential learning activities of service learning and/or internship activities at a four-year public Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) in the Inland Empire. Relationships were found between transfer students who participated in service learning and/or internship activities and those transfer students who did not participate in those activities on the following: level of satisfaction with their educational experience, current job/career, and sense of connectedness to the university, and beliefs about how much the university contributed to their acquisition of job- or work-related knowledge and skills. Predominant concepts regarding transfer students' beliefs about what the university could do to help them be successful, were the implementation of a transfer student orientation and creating a transfer student center.

Abstract: How are chosen the students for corporate internship programs by big multinational companies? This research looks into this questions by interviewing the principal actors - manager engineers and human resources professionals - and observing a complete process of student hiring. The author shows that the decisions to hire or not specific students are made through an evaluation of the candidates capacities and that those capacities are inferred from signals as: attending a prestigious university, having traveled abroad, knowing how to handle a group and how to properly talk to superiors and colleagues. This conclusions help to better understand how the socialization processes prepare youth to the job market, and how those processes articulate to the production of social inequality in the Brazilian society.

The obligatory internships are a fundamental part of the training of graduates, because it is in these activities that the future teachers have effectively contact with the educational institutions that will join. The present work will analyze the processes used for the management of compulsory traineeships in the Biological Sciences, Literatures and Mathematics courses of the Federal University of Juiz de Fora (UFJF). The choice of topic was based on observations made in the exercise of the Administrative technician in education in the Coordination of Internships of PROGRAD - UFJF, in which I was able to observe as a research hypothesis an administrative centralization of the activities of compulsory internships in undergraduate courses at the Faculty of Education of UFJF. In addition, the choice of these undergraduate courses was strategic, since we aimed to understand how the compulsory internships in graduation work in the three areas of science in the UFJF, namely, Human Sciences, Exact Sciences and Health Sciences. For the development of the research, the structure given to the compulsory stages in graduation, the existing standardization for its operation, as well as the role of the managing organs in its administration were verified. Therefore, in view of these problems, we will first present the institutional context of the obligatory internships at the UFJF, with special attention to the undergraduate courses, describing all the data gathered from the investigation of official documents. Then analyze the search problem. For this, some fundamental concepts and arguments on the subject will be presented, based on works by authors such as: Max Weber; Zhu Qianwei; Norbert Alter, Júlio Diniz, among others. It is also intended to conduct interviews with key institutional actors in this administrative process of compulsory internships in UFJF. Finally, through an Educational Action Plan (SAP), alternatives for more efficient administration of these stages, based on some devices already present in the institution, such as information technology resources, In which the internship forms were filled out through the Integrated Academic Management System of UFJF, aiming at the management of internships in undergraduate courses at the Federal University of Juiz de Fora.

A Win-Win Approach to Promoting Cooperation Between Business Organisations and Business Education: The Role of InternshipsYasin, Mahmoud M., Gomes, Carlos F., Miller, Phillip E. 01 January 2015 (has links)
Utilising internship evaluation forms of students from different majors, who were attending two universities in the USA, and Portugal, this research sought to assess relevant abilities, skills, and attitudes impacting the job performance of these students during their internships. Based on the evaluations analysed, it appears that executives of business organisations tended to value other non-technical aspects of performance, rather than merely the technical aspects. The implications and recommendations of this research to business education, and the business community are presented in the form of two conceptual frameworks. The frameworks are designed to promote win-win relationships, which enhance the employability of business graduates. The proposed frameworks stress the consistency, and the systematic approach to the business-like educational model.

Self-efficacy och verksamhetsförlagd utbildning under studietidenKjellberg, Ellen, Nagy, Yasmine January 2022 (has links)

COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS & STUDENT ENGAGEMENT IN FAITH-BASED SCHOOLSDunn, Matthew, 0000-0003-1106-642X January 2023 (has links)
Student engagement is a topic of interest among teachers and school leaders. In an era of high-stakes testing and a push to make students prepared for the workforce, teachers are finding ways to increase their student’s level of engagement. One method to increase student engagement is to use community partnerships to help enhance classroom instruction. This can be accomplished through work-based learning, problem-based learning, civic engagement, or service learning. While much research has been conducted on what public schools are doing with community partnerships and student engagement, little research has been conducted on faith-based schools. The goal of this study is to utilize the case study approach on two faith-based schools and see how they are using their community partnerships and whether these are improving student engagement or not. More specifically, this study looks to study the relationship between voluntary and compulsory course and/or program requirements in these schools and how teachers explain the role of their administration in such learning experiences. / Policy, Organizational and Leadership Studies

Between Opportunity and Exploitation: Labor Expectations and Institutional Practices in the Public Relations InternshipGiomboni , Joseph, 0000-0002-8812-3181 January 2021 (has links)
This dissertation explores the institutional practices that shape and inform internships within the public relations industry to shed light on the motivations and operating constraints that can lead to exploitive internship opportunities. It addresses how universities prepare emerging talent and the ways the public relations industry solicits labor. Theoretically informed by political economy of communication and cultural studies, this research builds on several key precepts, including creative autonomy, invisible labor, exploitation and practices of resistance, power dynamics within social structures, and investigates how hegemony is exercised through relations of power and consent.
The investigation is pursued through three entry points: A textual analysis of PR News examines how trade publications influence the professional identities of PR practitioners to understand how the industry constructs the ideal public relations employee. This study argues PR News creates interoffice conflict between generations of professionals centered on the topic of professional development. Next, an institutional analysis of internship advertisements at the top 25 communications firms provides insights on how the culture industries solicit student workers, illicit emotional responses to the media text, exploit the ontological rewards of future employment, and governance structures that may conceal forms of exploitation. Lastly, in-depth interviews with interns shed light on how these young laborers negotiate creativity within corporate governance structures, as well as intern’s motivations to produce content without earning a paycheck.
The conclusion summarizes findings, implications, real world applications, suggestions for future interns, as well as offers areas for future scholarship. / Media & Communication
