Lived experiences of two pre-service teachers from a midwestern rural university during internships

Splichal, Kevin L. January 1900 (has links)
Doctor of Philosophy / Curriculum and Instruction / Debbie K. Mercer / This phenomenological study explores the lived experiences of two elementary pre-service teachers in a Mid-western rural university in an attempt to heighten the quality and depth of those experiences as they pertain to pre-service teacher preparation prior to student teaching. The study analyzed the pre-service teachers’ descriptions of their lived experiences in elementary schools during internship experiences and how those experiences contributed to their personal growth as educators. Flick’s (2009) recommendations for phenomenological data analysis of personal journals and face-to-face interviews was used as a methodological framework for exploration of the two pre-service teachers’ lived experiences while Van Manen’s (1990) journal and interview methodologies were used for data collection. The findings were represented in thematic format and revealed transformational learning experiences for both participants. The six phenomenological themes captured the essences of teacher and student relationships and how classroom experiences contributed to personal learning opportunities for the pre-service teachers. Moreover, the findings of this study bolstered the necessity for pre-service teachers to reflect upon and evaluate interpersonal and intrapersonal lived experiences as they relate to the basic tenets of phenomenology in order to gain a fuller appreciation for how lived experiences of pre-service teachers, and their students, contribute to professional growth and improved decision-making skills. This study argues for a more attuned investigation of the basic tenets of phenomenology to increase student achievement through improved teacher and student relationships, and to enhance pre-service teachers’ personal and professional learning.

LINGUISTIC AND CULTURAL FACTORS IN GRADUATE SCHOOL ADMISSIONS: AN EXAMINATION OF LATIN AMERICAN STUDENTS AT PURDUE UNIVERSITY

Rodrigo A. Rodriguez-Fuentes (5930201) 16 January 2019 (has links)

While the number of graduate students from different parts of the world in the United States is decreasing, the trend in Latin American populations is the opposite. Nonetheless, the current lack of information regarding the reasons behind this tendency, in terms of English language proficiency and cultural aspects, affects all parts involved: graduate students do not know what type of opportunities they can make use of; American universities do not have enough information to provide Latin American students with a sheltering environment; and Latin American governments are unable to make policies that encourage the application and facilitate admission to graduate school in American universities.

The aim of this study is to establish a starting point for understanding the linguistic and cultural complexities of the Latin American population in graduate school in the United States. To do so, surveys and interviews were carried out to explore academic experiences, cultural influences and socioeconomic patterns that influenced the admission of Latin American students to graduate school. Mixed methods were used to describe the patterns of the survey responses quantitatively while leaving room for confirmatory quantitative analysis using the information of the interviews. The participants of this study were graduate students from Purdue University, one of the American universities with the highest number of Latin American graduate students.

The results of this study underscore the importance of effective English language instruction during college years for reaching the graduate school admission scores, especially in cases when English language training during school was not possible or had little impact on the functional proficiency of the learner. Also, there is a large body of evidence indicating that undergraduate research internships could be one of the opportunities with the highest potential to recruit graduate Latin American students, regardless of their socioeconomic background.

Information and communications technologies have become a part of the organizational processes in recent decades to follow the of the market dynamism, to reduce costs, and increase profits. The recruitment has gained importance in this competitive scenario among organizations, being progressively carried out on the internet. Therefore, this research focused on investigating the online recruiting of university students, generally a part of the Generation Y, more prone to seek jobs online and to become targeted for human resources professionals‟ actions on media and social networks. The main objective was to understand how students deal with media and online social networks when they search for internships positions. The specific objectives were: (a) to investigate how the format and content of the advertisements published on the media and online social networks affect student‟s decision to enroll or not in selection processes for internship positions; (b) to understand the reasons why they seek jobs on these medias; (c) to examine how individuals deal with these medias. A qualitative research was conducted applying the multiple case study method, through semistructured interviews and direct observations in eight individuals. Data collection was carried out through individual interviews via Skype. Results revealed five main categories: (1) Navigation: refers to how respondents search for openings on the web, as well as presents the reasons that led them to stop their quest; (2) The form and content of the ads: shows the extent to which these factors influenced their decision to enroll or not in an internship position; (3) Online CV playing against the navigability: the difficulty to fill them out was perceived as a barrier to apply in advertised internship positions; (4) Diversions: shed light as to how the focus of each subject shifted during their interviews, expressed in the distractions that led them to stray from their search for positions to do other things online; (5) Comfort zone: revealed a major preference for receiving job openings advertisements via e-mail, as well as to center all activities – social, personal, professional and entertainment – on Facebook, suggesting the need of the interviewees to remain in a familiar setting. In conclusion, the means magnetism, mainly the Facebook, is greater than its content, making secondary students‟ search for internship openings.

Relationship Between Internships and Employment Competencies of Degreed Professionals Who Completed a College Internship

Barnwell, Shawn 01 January 2016 (has links)
An estimated 1.5 million underemployed or unemployed college graduates have one or more college degrees, and many have high loan debt. Policy makers, students, and institutions of higher education are all concerned with the question of how prepared students are to enter the workforce upon graduation, yet little is known about whether internships are a strategy to improve career preparedness and gainful employment after graduation. Guided by Dewey and Kolb's experiential learning theory, the purpose of this nonexperimental study was to evaluate the impact of internships on career preparation from the perspective of graduates, specifically to evaluate whether graduates perceive participation in an internship improved their level of career preparedness in human services related fields. Post-internship survey data were acquired from a group of 21 graduates using the Career Benefits of CO-OP/Internship Experience instrument who were enrolled in a degree program at various colleges and universities in southeastern Virginia. These data were analyzed using a paired t test to compare pre and post internship perceptions of career preparedness. Results indicate a statistically significant improvement between the pre-internship and post-internship perceptions (p = .05). Furthermore, the study offers support to the notion that experiential learning may impact career success. This result indicates that internships may have a positive impact on career progression and gainful employment after graduation. The positive social change implications of this study includes recommendations to policy makers and university leaders to construct academic programs that incorporate internship opportunities, particularly to promote overall student success and future gainful employment.

EXPLORING INFLUENCES AND USING INTENTIONALITY TO DEVELOP WORK-BASED LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES: A FACULTY PERSPECTIVE

McCrary, Lauren 01 January 2019 (has links)
Understanding the practical implications related to experiential learning is complex. It is important to first view experiential learning as an umbrella term under which work-based learning (WBL) is housed. To further particularize, there are different avenues for students to pursue work-based learning opportunities (WBLOs), with internships and cooperative education being two. Although these are not new learning environments, understanding and clearly defining them (to both internal and external bodies) is increasingly necessary. In Kentucky, WBLOs are part of the political discourse on postsecondary education. The Council on Postsecondary Education (CPE) and local economic development agencies have incorporated strengthening and growing WBLOs into their strategic plans. This demand is echoed by students and parents. By interviewing faculty with varying enrollments in their WBLOs, this study set out to explore influences on the development and implementation of these experiences from their perspective. The dissertation is written in three manuscripts, including a companion piece written in collaboration with Robert Boone that examines WBLOs from a complementary faculty (McCrary) and student perspective (Boone). It situates the problem of practice (WBLOs) in the current landscape of Kentucky Community and Technical College System. The second manuscript describes anticipated and unanticipated findings related to the development and implementation of WBLOs drawn from my interviews with WBLO coordinators across the state. Selected examples include the role of the advisory board and faculty background on the development of WBLOs and stakeholder preparation and conveying benefits to the community during implementation. The third manuscript explores obstacles encountered and offers potential avenues to circumvent or overcome said obstacles based on information collected through the interviews of this qualitative, exploratory study. This dissertation will be of use to both senior administrators interested in increasing WBLOs at their institution and to faculty who are interested in offering the opportunities to their students. This study offers insight to current practices related to WBLO development and implementation and offers potential avenues to overcome obstacles.
