Delgado, Douglas. January 2018 (has links)
With the focus on understanding cultural creations at the heart of symbolic disputes, research aims to investigate sociability relationships and cultural processes in the contemporary world, involving the meanings attributed to the relations and the material space of the city through interactions and cultural practices, in the context of the grouping of goths in the metropolis of São Paulo. Through the understanding of the "city" as a cultural system responsible for putting into contact with culturally heterogeneous social actors, making the "city alive", procedural and contextual, ethnography is based on the analytical keys of the city anthropology, as with the concepts of "city", "situation" and "network". "Generation", "moral" and "consumption" are the main identity markers in the processes of interaction between the Gothic, attributing meanings to the relations of "proximity" and "distance" to the urban experiences of goths in São Paulo. Identity boundaires reveal a nostalgic relationship with urban space, fundamental to "being gothic" in the 1990s and which is now expressed with new meanings, co-opted by the new generation's Gothic; a strategic relationship, used through organized meetings in cyberspace, of the new generation, which extends the boundaries of identification with the Gothic and questions the diversity and representativeness issues; and a relatio... Discourses of love and money : exploring constructions of gender and romantic relationships.

Tofts, Michelle S. January 2013 (has links)
This dissertation considers gender relations and intimacy in romantic relationships within the context of economic globalization and consumer culture. The aim was to explore how the economic structure of South African society and the culture of consumption that has accompanied this structure influence the way men and women view themselves and each other, and the impact this has on the relationships they form. Social Constructionism was used as a theoretical framework and specific attention was paid to the discourses evident in the speech of participants and the effects these discourses may have had on the formation of intimate bonds. Data was collected from young middle class women aged 18-25 using focus groups and individual, semi-structured interviews and was analysed using discourse analysis to explore the ways in which ideas of identity, self-worth, status and value shape these relationships. The following discourses were identified from the data: Men and women are different, Romantic relationships as a means to social inclusion/self-esteem, Love as a risk, Love as hard work and Physical attractiveness as necessary for romantic relationships. / Thesis (M.A.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, 2013.
