Conflitos identitários do árabe israelense: Aravim Rokdim de Sayed Kashua / Identity conflict of the Arab-Israeli: Aravim Rokdim of Sayed Kashua

Este trabalho consiste na análise do romance Aravim Rokdim (Árabes Dançantes), do escritor árabe israelense muçulmano Sayed Kashua, e tem como foco central a questão identitária que envolve o árabe israelense conforme visto nessa obra. Publicado em 2002, o romance conta em hebraico, idioma que tem como leitor majoritário o judeu, a história de uma família de árabes israelenses. Este estudo é desenvolvido com base nas teorias provindas dos Estudos Culturais e Pós- Colonialistas, segundo as quais no ser humano coexistem múltiplas e antagônicas identidades. Esse fato é exponencialmente visto nesse árabe cidadão israelense apresentado no romance de Kashua, que convive com sentimentos de culpa devido à sua dupla-lealdade e conflitantes fidelidades: por um lado, ele aceita sua cidadania israelense; por outro, além de ser membro de um povo cujas muitas nações se opõem à existência do Estado de Israel, ele possui parentes nos territórios ocupados por Israel na Guerra dos Seis Dias (1967) que não tiveram direito àquela cidadania. Esses sentimentos complexos e ambivalentes são intensificados devido ao contexto sociopolítico do romance: a Segunda Intifada (2000-2006). Nesse período da moderna história de Israel, a desconfiança do judeu e do Estado de Israel em relação à fidelidade do cidadão árabe israelense para com seu Estado foi exacerbada. Surge dessa combinação um romance político inusitado, que se utiliza do humor e da autoironia para contar ao seu leitor a história do árabe israelense que vive preso entre duas sociedades, que se sente um estrangeiro em seu próprio meio e, mesmo assim, não desiste de buscar um novo lugar identitário para si próprio. / This work consists of an analysis of the novel Aravim Rokdim (Dancing Arabs) by Arab-Israeli Muslim writer Sayed Kashua, which focuses on the identity issues surrounding Arab-Israelis portrayed in the work. Published in 2002, the novel is written in Hebrew and recounts the history of an Arab-Israeli family. This study is based on the theories derived from the Cultural and Post-Colonial Studies, according to which human beings simultaneously experience multiple and antagonistic identities. This fact can be observed exponentially in this Arab citizen of Israel introduced by Kashua, as he lives with feelings of guilt due to his twin-loyalties and conflicting allegiances: if, on one side, he accepts his Israeli citizenship, on the other, he is not only a member of a people whose many nations oppose the existence of the State of Israel, but has relatives living in territories occupied by Israel in the Six-Day War (1967) who were denied the right to that citizenship. These complex and ambivalent feelings are intensified by the social-political context of the novel: the Second Intifada (2000-2006), a period in modern Israeli history when the distrust of Jews and the State of Israel regarding the allegiance of Arab-Israeli citizens to the State was exacerbated. These circumstances result in a unique political novel that uses humor and self-irony to tell the reader the story of an Arab-Israeli that lives trapped between two societies, that feels like a foreigner among his own people and that tirelessly seeks a new place to call his own.

Unintended alliances: Kennedy, Israel, and Arab nationalism

This thesis will explore the origins of the U.S.-Israeli alliance during the Kennedy administration. John F. Kennedy provided Israel with the first U.S. weapons sale, issued the first informal security guarantee, and established the first joint security consultations between both nations. Ironically, Kennedy gave these concessions to contain Israel, not to establish closer relations. His primary objective for the Middle East was to improve U.S. relations with Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser, seeing Nasser as the path for gaining pro-American sentiments among the Arab population in the region to the detriment of the Soviets. Kennedy unintentionally laid the foundations of the U.S.-Israeli alliance while trying to restrain Israel, fearing Israeli actions would impede his plans. Este trabalho procura mostrar como a mulher ortodoxa judia é representada no cinema israelense. A partir da análise de três filmes: Kadosh, de Amos Gitai, produzido em 1999; Hasodot (Segredos Íntimos), de Avi Nesher, produzido em 2007 e Chufshat Kaitz (My Father, my Lord), de David Volach, produzido em 2007, busca-se compreender como se deram os processos culturais que determinaram alguns comportamentos da sociedade ortodoxa judaica em relação à mulher, enfocando os seguintes temas: fertilidade feminina, homossexualidade, a educação das mulheres e o silêncio. Como arcabouço teórico central estão as obras Vigiar e punir e A microfísica do poder, de Michel Foucault e as fontes tradicionais judaicas, como o Talmud, a Bíblia Hebraica, e outros textos canônicos, utilizadas no sentido de entender como o conhecimento se transforma em poder dentro da sociedade ortodoxa judaica e, nesse contexto, como a mulher é sujeitada por ele. / This paper seeks to show how the orthodox jewish woman is represented in Israeli cinema. From the analysis of three films: Kadosh by Amos Gitai, produced in 1999; Hasodot (The Secrets) by Avi Nesher, produced in 2007 and Chufshat Kaitz (My Father, My Lord) by David Volach, produced in 2007, we look to understand how cultural processes have led to some behaviors of the orthodox jewish community facing women, focusing on the following topics: female fertility, homosexuality, women\'s education and silence. Central theoretical framework are the works by Michel Foucault: Discipline and Punish and The microphysics of power, and the traditional Jewish sources, as the Talmud, the Hebrew Bible, and other canonical texts, used in order to understand how knowledge is transformed into power within the orthodox jewish society and in this context, as the woman is subjected by it.

O objetivo deste trabalho é sugerir uma análise detalhada do romance Essav (Esaú) pelo autor israelense Meir Shalev. O romance foi publicado em 1991, e é essencialmente uma espécie de saga, que transmite a história de algumas gerações de uma família judia, desde os primeiros dias da colonização sionista na terra de Israel. Meir Shalev começou a escrever no final dos anos oitenta e pertence à geração pós-modernista. Sua escrita mostra influências das características de seu tempo. Mesmo assim, ainda podemos detectar em seu trabalho tendências modernistas que estão sendo manifestadas na busca de encontrar um sentido para a vida e na tentativa de representar sua complexidade. A metodologia da análise detalhada do romance se baseia em várias fontes teóricas: a primeira é Close Reading, um termo cunhado por Richards, um dos líderes da escola nova crítica. O procedimento desta leitura é focar atentamente nas palavras escritas, na tentativa de descobrir e descrever todos os efeitos de suas relações linguísticas. Outra fonte metodológica é o ensaio famoso de Roland Barthes e sua afirmação de que o autor está morto. A morte do autor permite o nascimento do leitor que pode assumir novas autoridades para com o texto na frente dele. O \"dialogismo\" de Bakhtin fornece uma outra base teórica importante. Segundo esta teoria, qualquer expressão verbal provoca relações intertextuais com muitos outros discursos. Desde o romance Essav é rico em alusões e citações da Bíblia e da literatura ocidental, a intertextualidade é igualmente uma ferramenta interpretativa importante. A análise do romance começa com uma tentativa de descobrir os princípios que organizam a sua estrutura, o que pode parecer uma espécie de colagem ou uma colcha, feita de diferentes ítens que estão ligados sem qualquer orientação distinta. O romance apresenta um conceito de que os acontecimentos históricos são, na verdade, ciclos repetitivos. Uma tentativa de compreender a natureza do tempo é outro tema embutido nele. O romance também trata de questões humanas e as relações entre o homem, a terra e a natureza, elementos que recebem teor mitológico no romance. Estes temas estão também ligados à questão da ideologia sionista e seu impacto sobre a estratificação social das primeiras gerações de assentamento pioneiro. 6 Outros temas derivam da análise dos fundamentos bíblicos no romance, especialmente as histórias sobre o relacionamento e o destino dos gêmeos Jacó e Esaú. Temas centrais adicionais, típicos na poética de Meir Shalev, são aqueles de realização e perda e de relação entre a ficção e a realidade. Este ultimo tema é construído pelo uso massivo de citações e alusões à literatura mundial e por um estilo de narrativa de um trovador. Este estilo rompe a ilusão de realidade, salientando o ato de narrar em si só. / The purpose of this work is to suggest a detailed analysis of the novel Esav (Esau) by the Israeli author Meir Shalev. The novel was published in 1991, and is essentially, a type of saga, which conveys the story of four generations of Jewish family starting from the first days of Zionist settlements in the land of Israel. Meir Shalev, who started writing in the late eighties, belongs to the postmodernist generation, and his writing shows influences of the tendencies of his time. Even so, we can still detect in his work, clear modernist trends, which are being manifested in a search for meaning and in portraying the complexity of life. The methodology of the detailed analysis of the novel relies on several theoretical sources: the first is \'close reading, a term coined by Richards, one of the leaders of the new criticism school. The procedure of close reading focuses on the words on the page, in an attempt to discover and describe all the effects of their linguistic relations. Another methodological source is the famous essay of Roland Barthes and his assertion that the author is dead; the death of the author allows the birth of the reader, who can assume new authorities towards the text in front of him. Bakhtins Dialogism provides another important theoretical basis. According to this theory, any verbal utterance provokes intertextual relations with many other utterances. Since the novel Esav is rich with allusions and quotations from the Bible and Western literature, intertextuality is also an important interpretative tool. The analysis of the novel begins with an attempt to uncover the principles that organize its structure, which might appear to be a kind of collage or a quilt, made of different items that are attached together, without any distinct guideline. The novel presents a concept that historical events are actually repeating cycles. An attempt to understand the nature of time is another theme embedded in it. The novel also deals with human relationships and mans attitude to earth and nature, elements that receive a mythological design in the novel. These themes are also connected to the question of Zionist ideology and its impact on the social stratification of the early generations of pioneering settlement. More themes derive from the analysis of the role of the biblical infrastructure of the novel, especially the stories about the relationship and the fate of the twins Jacob and Esau. Other central themes, typical of Meir Shalevs poetics, are those of fulfillment and loss, and the relationship between fiction and reality. The last theme is established by a massive use of quotations and allusions to world-literature and by a narrative style of a troubadour. This style breaks the illusion of reality and thus, emphasizes the act of telling in itself.

This thesis intends to introduce Israeli folk dance from a number of different perspectives. In the first part, based on literature review, the author presents the origins of Israeli folk dances in Israel as well as their roots and the way they further function in a current Israeli society. Special attention is given to the problematic labeling of Israeli folk dance as "folk". The second part of the thesis is based on the author's own field work and describes the ways Israeli folk dances are practiced in the Czech environment. Whereas in Israel these dances are mostly connected with demonstration of Israeli identity, they get different meanings in the Czech environment. Firstly the author attempted to reconstruct the history of spreading of Israeli folk dances in the Czech environment and to map the different groups involved in these dances. Collection of these facts can be further used as an information source for all researchers wishing to conduct studies on Israeli folk dances in the Czech Republic in the future. Secondly the author concentrated on the ways of practicing Israeli folk dances in a Prague group called Besamim. Based on participant observation and interviews with the dancers the author attempted to illustrate the significance of these dances in the lives of people, who practice them...

Those Who Remained: The Jews of Iraq Since 1951

<p>This dissertation examines the history of Jews in Iraq from 1951 to 1973 and their associations in diaspora thereafter. Iraqi Jews trace their community back 2500 years to the Babylonian exile and Jews played prominent roles in modern Iraqi politics, society, and culture until 1950-1951, when most Iraqi Jews left following a period of anti-Jewish hostility. The history of the remaining Jewish community after 1951 is an important case study of Jews in the Middle East (sometimes referred to as Sephardi or Mizrahi Jews) during a period when many such communities faced violence and displacement amidst the Arab-Israeli conflict. Their history also provides unique insights into changes in Iraq’s political culture under the various revolutionary regimes that followed the 1958 revolution. This dissertation shows that Jews in Iraq after 1951 successfully re-established a communal and social presence until the Israeli victory in the Six Day War of June 1967 prompted renewed anti-Jewish hostility. However, this dissertation argues that it was the Ba’th Party coup in July 1968 that led to the depopulation of the remaining Jewish community as the party manipulated anti-Israeli sentiment in its effort to consolidate power in Iraq, unleashing a deadly campaign of terror on innocent Jews.</p>

The Israeli-Palestinian Conflict in American, Arab, and British Media: Corpus-Based Critical Discourse Analysis

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is one of the longest and most violent conflicts in modern history. The language used to represent this important conflict in the media is frequently commented on by scholars and political commentators (e.g., Ackerman, 2001; Fisk, 2001; Mearsheimer & Walt, 2007). To date, however, few studies in the field of applied linguistics have attempted a thorough investigation of the language used to represent the conflict in influential media outlets using systematic methods of linguistic analysis. The current study aims to partially bridge this gap by combining methods and analytical frameworks from Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and Corpus Linguistics (CL) to analyze the discursive representation of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in American, Arab, and British media, represented by CNN, Al-Jazeera Arabic, and BBC respectively. CDA, which is primarily interested in studying how power and ideology are enacted and resisted in the use of language in social and political contexts, has been frequently criticized mainly for the arbitrary selection of a small number of texts or text fragments to be analyzed. In order to strengthen CDA analysis, Stubbs (1997) suggested that CDA analysts should utilize techniques from CL, which employs computational approaches to perform quantitative and qualitative analysis of actual patterns of use occurring in a large and principled collection of natural texts. In this study, the corpus-based keyword technique is initially used to identify the topics that tend to be emphasized, downplayed, and/or left out in the coverage of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in three corpora complied from the news websites of Al-Jazeera, CNN, and the BBC. Topics –such as terrorism, occupation, settlements, and the recent Israeli disengagement plan—which were found to be key in the coverage of the conflict—are further studied in context using several other corpus tools, especially the concordancer and the collocation finder. The analysis reveals some of the strategies employed by each news website to control for the positive or negative representations of the different actors involved in the conflict. The corpus findings are interpreted using some informative CDA frameworks, especially Van Dijk’s (1998) ideological square framework.

This thesis aims at analyzing the reasons for the insoluble nature of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. The reasons behind the continuation of the conflict are various. However, this thesis mainly concentrated on the ones stemmed from the clash of Arab nationalism and Zionism. This clash basically represents the failure of both sides in making any concession from their territorial attachments which resulted from Arab nationalism and Zionism. Though both nationalisms were constructed on the same founding factors such as religion, territory and culture, Arab nationalists and Zionists gained different positions during the conflict. These positions determined the future of all of the peace processes in the near past. All peace processes that had focused on the solution of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict displayed that any formulation for a last settlement to the conflict should take into consideration the inability of the parties to agree on a territorial compromise and the adoption by both sides of the continuation of the conflict as a political instrument.

Turkish Foreign Policy Towards Israel: The Implications Of Turkey

This thesis aims to analyze the Turkish foreign policy towards the State of Israel in a historical perspective and to examine how the foreign policy perceptions of the AKP Government having Islamic roots that came to power in 2002 affected this policy. The thesis argues that, historically, the Western connection of the Turkish Republic has determined the Turkish foreign policy towards Israel and the foreign policy perceptions of the AKP Government strengthened this connection rather than weakening it. It is argued that, the fundamental reason underlying this situation is the efforts of the AKP Government to use its compromising foreign policy as a leverage against the constitutional legitimacy question it faced in domestic politics. As a result, during the AKP era, it is concluded that, Turkish foreign policy towards Israel has not undergone fundamental changes at least as long as the domestic legitimacy question exists.
