Vilaró, Ignacio 09 April 2018 (has links)
A pragmatic definition of the Begging the question fallacy is presented in this paper. In the first part of it I consider and reject Frank Jackson’s suggestion according to which argumentation possesses a different end than rationally persuading an audience that something is the case. The definition is presented in part II. Part III refers briefly to the representation of arguments through graphs. Finally, in part IV, the proposed definition is applied to some argument examples.

The Ghosts of Horseshoe Bend: Myth, Memory, and the Making of a National Battlefield

January 2014 (has links)
abstract: This research explores the various and often conflicting interpretations of the Battle of Horseshoe Bend, an event seemingly lost in the public mind of twenty-first century America. The conflict, which pitted United States forces under the command of Major General Andrew Jackson against a militant offshoot of the Creek Confederacy, known as the Redsticks, ranks as the single most staggering loss of life in annals of American Indian warfare. Today, exactly 200 years after the conflict, the legacy of Horseshoe Bend stands as an obscure and often unheard of event. Drawing upon over two centuries of unpublished archival data, newspapers, and political propaganda this research argues that the dominate narrative of Northern history, the shadowy details of the War of 1812, and the erasure of shameful events from the legacy of westward expansion have all contributed to transform what once was a battle of epic proportions, described by Jackson himself as an "extermination," into a seemingly forgotten affair. Ultimately, the Battle of Horseshoe Bend's elusiveness has allowed for the production of various historical myths and political messages, critiques and hyperboles, facts and theories. Hailed as a triumph during the War of 1812, and a high-water mark by the proponents of Manifest Destiny, Jackson's victory has also experienced its fair share of American derision and disregard. Whereas some have criticized the battle as a "cold blooded massacre," others have glorified it as a touchstone of American masculinity, and excused it as a natural event in the unfolding of human evolution. Despite the battle's controversial nature, on 3 August 1956, President Dwight D. Eisenhower, a strong supporter of the National Park Service, approved act HR 11766 establishing Horseshoe Bend National Military Park, the very first national park in the state of Alabama. Hailed and forgotten, silenced and celebrated, exploited and yet largely unknown. This research explores what happened after the smoke cleared at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend. It is a story about the production of history, the power of the past, and the malleability of the American mind. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.A. History 2014

The industrial initiatives for the production finalization of packed multi-commodities without forming stock require constant technological innovation. They operate a synchronous process to simultaneous multi-loading straightly into trucks. Regarding to this we developed a discrete event simulation model and present its traffic analytical model validated with the theory of Jackson Queueing Networks and the Little's Conservation Law. We describe the limits for the range of multi-commodities throuput-times and maximum waiting time in real-time systems with three parallel servers. This system operates with dynamical changes of different scheduling policies. A reached result is the confirmation of the average and maximum times mutual commitment despite of traffic intensity and scheduling policies that the model is submitted to. Another is the identification of a range of relative operational stability out of critical regions. As a contribution we offer the principles of a method that can be used to planning decision support in complex industrial environments subject to real-time queues / Mestrado / Tecnologia e Inovação / Mestre em Tecnologia

Grekisk mytologi i The Lightning Thief av Rick Riordan / Greek Mythology in The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan

Liu, Olivia January 2017 (has links)

Pans ande : En ekokritisk analys av Rick Riordans bokserie om Percy Jackson / The Spirit of Pan : An Ecocritical Reading of Percy Jackson and the Olympians by Rick Riordan

Tollstern, Jenny January 2018 (has links)

Michael Jackson : a psychobiography

Ruiters, Jeremy John January 2014 (has links)
In a psychobiography a psychological theory is used as a framework to uncover the story of an individual. The psychobiographical approach to research tends to be underutilised. The result of this is that an important area for the application of psychobiographical theory and the study of completed lives is neglected. The value of psychobiographical studies has been advocated by many scholars in the field of psychobiographical research for the development and testing of theories relating to human development. The subject under investigation in this psychobiography is Michael Jackson. Although much has been written about Jackson, not much of the existing literature adopts a psychological focus. The sampling procedure was purposive, as the subject was deliberately selected. The aim of this research was to explore and describe the life of Jackson through the use of the psychobiographical case method. Life history material in the form of biographies, newspaper articles, documentaries and interviews aided in creating a biographical sketch of Jackson's life. The progression of Jackson's personality development was analysed using Erikson’s psychosocial development theory. The data collection and analysis were conducted according to Yin's analytical generalisation which consists of two main strategies: (1) using a theoretical framework as a guide to determine what data are relevant, and (2) developing a matrix as a descriptive framework for organising and integrating the data. Furthermore, the process of data analysis was aided by the use of guidelines prepared by Alexander with Erikson’s psychosocial development as the theoretical framework. This research undertaking can be recognised as a positive demonstration of the value of Erikson’s psychosocial developmental theory in understanding the process of Michael Jackson's personality development. Recommendations regarding future research that utilises the psychobiographical research design and methodology have been made.
