A geography of poverty in Jakarta (Indonesia) : Places, spaces and poverty in a contemporary metropolis

Dietrich, Judicaëlle 13 November 2015 (has links)
Based on qualitative methodologies, this PhD dissertation proposes a geographical analysis of urban poverty, in one of the biggest city in the world. The urban region of Jakarta counts more than twenty millions of inhabitants. It comes up as the showcase for economic success in Indonesia and a node of globalization, where one could expect the level of poverty to have decreased. Yet, current urban dynamics contribute to unsettle urban spaces increasing the vulnerability of poor people. The examination of the concept of poverty through a geographical lens allows to grasp the diversity of social and spatial positions and positionnings, from the neighborhood level to the metropolitan area. It helps also to investigate how they compete with each other and are (re)negotiated and interwoven under the influence of power relations. More than the mere situation of poverty, this work is based on a cross-analysis of individual and collective trajectories and spatial transformations. Further than the issue of defining poverty, this thesis explores the role of representations and the interest of stakeholders in urban policies related to mainstream ideologies, such as urban neoliberalism. Finally, a comparison between different types of poverty’s spaces in Jakarta and in Bekasi shows the strong differences in space’s appropriations and space’s uses. Beyond the idea of dualization of the urban society, this study aims to highlight the segmented interests of citizens, according to their sense of being legitimate in the city and their sense of belonging to the city. This shows how much the geographical inquiry is political.

Analyse des micropolluants organiques dans les sédiments et le biota (Perna viridis et Polymesoda erosa) de la baie de Jakarta et de la lagune de Segara Anakan, Indonésie / Organic micropollutants content in sediments and biotas (Polymesoda erosa and Perna viridis) from Jakarta Bay and Segara Anakan Lagoon, Indonesia

Azis, Muhammad Yudhistira 27 July 2016 (has links)
Environmental problems can increase due to anthropogenic activities or natural phenomena. Indonesia is an archipelagic country that consists of many islands and coastal regions, where the growth of anthrophogenic and natural activities has exhibited severe environmental degradation in the past few decades. This study aims to explore (both qualitatively and quantitatively) the extent and sources of organic contaminants, i.e., n-alkanes in surface sediments; PAHs, PCBs and OCs in sediments and mussels, P. viridis from Jakarta Bay, North Jakarta, and P. erosa from the Segara Anakan Lagoon. Each protocol was continued with qualitative and quantitative analysis by GC-QQQ(triple-quadropole)/MS. Matrix interferences have been evaluated with proper samples with suitable yield of extraction and analysis. The n-alkanes, PAHs, PCBs and Organochlorin pesticides are detected in the highest levels in sediments, respectively 1935 µg/kg dw, 916 µg/kg dw, 116,49 µg/kg dw, and 16,70 µg/kg dw. In addition, the highest levels of PAHs (1739 µg/kg dw) and OCs levels (24,79 µg/kg dw) were found in biota. The source of hydrocarbons source, such the PAHs were generalelly petroleum source (transport utilization) although the pyrolytic are still present in sediments and biota. Environmental risk assessment from sediment quality guidelines (SQGs) were used to evaluate the probability risk in marine environments. Besides SQGs, sediments and mussels also in regard to the extent of the PAHs, PCBs and OCs (i.e. pp’-DDE) have been compared to other studies conducted at some polluted sites.

Is Social Marketing a solution to the water consumption problems in Jakarta (Indonesia)?

Anggrahita, Hayuning 26 June 2014 (has links)
The water resources in Jakarta are abundant because the average rainfall in Jakarta is 2500 mm/year and this city is crossed by 13 important rivers. However, Jakarta cannot meet the needs of its inhabitants when it comes to an appropriate “drinkable” water supply. The access to the appropriate“drinkable” water is unequal according to various socio-spatial criteria pertaining to the Jakartan community. Moreover, the Indonesian society in general, and Jakartans in particular, tend to think that water resources are unlimited. It leads to an excessive use of water resources which deteriorates the water supply problem in Jakarta. Based on the issues above, this study tries in the first place to highlight the causes of the water paradox in Jakarta, taking into account an historical trajectory of the way the water supplying system evolved in Jakarta. Secondly, field surveys within the Jakartan community, according to the different socio-spatial categories, were conducted to see how the inhabitants understand the disparity of the water supply, as they face this phenomenon day to day. It can affect their perceptions and behaviors concerning water. Finally, since the Province of Jakarta is populated with 9.7 million people, water savings seem important. The approach borrowed from the marketing domain, “social marketing” appears to hold potential to convince and persuade the community to preserve water. A case study of Unilever’s program, “Gerakan Molto Ultra Sekali Bilas”, will be analyzed in order to justify the potential of social marketing.

Factors influencing the use of antibiotics and knowledge about antibiotic resistance in Jakarta : A qualitative study on the perceptions of stakeholders involved in Yayasan Orangtua Peduli’s Smart Use of Antibiotics campaign in Indonesia

Mohrs, Simone January 2015 (has links)
Introduction: Southeast Asia has among the highest rates of antibiotic resistance worldwide, particularly in Indonesia, where paediatricians prescribed antibiotics to 94% of children, knowing that the infection was viral. Relevance: There is a gap in understanding of the reasons behind the irrational use of antibiotics by healthcare professionals and patients. Aim: This research aims to explore factors that influence the use of antibiotics and knowledge about antibiotic resistance in Jakarta, Indonesia. Methods: In December 2014, the researcher conducted thirteen semi-structured interviews with four stakeholder groups, which are involved in the “Smart Use of Antibiotics” campaign in Jakarta. Qualitative Content Analysis was used to identify the theme “unite our voice to address antibiotic resistance from all angles” as well as the five categories: Education, Media, Policy, Culture and Trust. Results: Each category presented one factor, which was divided into the sub-factors education of patients and professionals; online and offline media; policy and guidelines, drug availability and accessibility and stakeholder involvement; habit and behaviour, doctor-patient relationship, environment / surroundings; and trust in the system, in the healthcare professionals, among professionals and in medicine. Conclusion: All stakeholders need to unite their voices together to achieve a smarter use of antibiotics and increase the knowledge about antibiotic resistance.

The spatial structure of employment and its impacts on the journey to work in the Jakarta metropolitan area: a Southeast Asian extended metropolitan region (EMR) perspective

Hakim, Ikhwan, Built Environment, Faculty of Built Environment, UNSW January 2009 (has links)
This thesis is developed upon inquires on urban spatial structure of Southeast Asian extended metropolitan region (EMR) and its impacts on travel. Literature suggests that while efforts in promoting transport sustainability in the developed world have included policy measures involving urban spatial structure and its physical features as a consequence of the understanding on strong link between land use and transport, there has been lack of understandings on the spatial structure in major cities in Southeast Asia. Exploratory spatial data analysis (ESDA) is adopted for identification of important components of the spatial structure of employment in the Jakarta Metropolitan Area (JMA). The approach has been specifically designed in order to extract clusters as suggested in the Southeast Asian EMR concept. It is found that the spatial structure of employment in the JMA consists of the following major components: the urban core of Jakarta; the single dominant and expanded regional CBD within the urban core of Jakarta; manufacturing corridors that are largely follow toll roads radiating out of the urban core; local government regions that in general have not been developed into substantial sub-centres; desakota areas overlapping the manufacturing corridors and the agricultural areas; and portions of agricultural areas in the outer parts of Bekasi, Bogor and Tangerang regencies. The result shows that spatial structure of JMA conforms to the Southeast Asian EMR concept rather than the monocentric, polycentric or sprawl patterns debated for the case of developed cities. Commuting impacts of the identified spatial structure of employment and its physical features are investigated using the desireline analysis, home-to-work trip pattern comparisons (ANOVA) by the employment clusters, and ordinary linear regression and logistic regression models. It is found that the spatial structure identified and its physical features have significant associations to variations in the pattern of commuting across the region. The physical features of the employment spatial structure identified include important policy sensitive variables such as job density, job to household ratio, land use diversity and job accessibility. Policy implications of the findings are developed and centred on recommending both the spatial structure of employment and its physical characteristics that promote more sustainable transport in the JMA.
