Mir grauet vor der Götter Neide - Der Neid der Eltern in Fallbeispielen und Literatur / The envy of the gods I fear - The envy of the parents in case studies and literature

Behrens, Sabine 04 December 1998 (has links)

Hovington, Edith 12 1900 (has links)
Evolutionary models propose that women are more affected by emotional infidelity than by sexual infidelity. The associated psychological mechanisms would have evolved during the hunter-gatherer phase of our phylogenetic history and would be a response to a woman’s need to secure exclusive access to the economic resources provided by her mate. The economic situation of women has changed considerably since then, many women being financially independent. In the present study we test the hypothesis that financially independent women are less intensively jealous, or become less rapidly jealous, compared to women who rely financially on their husband. We also assess whether the number of children, or certain personality traits, affect jealousy. Our sample included 60 women and the data were obtained through questionnaires featuring fictional situations. Our results do not support the main hypothesis; the various subgroups of women were jealous at comparable levels. We discuss various factors that might account for these findings, including the possibility that other aspects of the relationship might have concealed the effect of a woman’s economic situation. We also found significant differences in the intensity of jealousy according to the identity of the husband’s fictional partner (old versus new girlfriend). These results are also discussed in an evolutionary perspective.

Pereira, Caroline Rubin Rossato January 2011 (has links)
The present study aimed to investigate sibling rivalry in preschool firstborns from parents’ perspective, from pregnancy to the second child’s 24th months. In particular, it aimed to understand how sibling rivaly manifests itself and develops through the initial 2 years of the sibling’s relationship. In addition, the study aimed to examine possible interactions between sibling rivalry and parental relationship. A collective-case study was carried out with four families comprising both parents and two children. Fathers and mothers answered separately to a semistructured interview, comprising four moments of data collection (3rd trimester of pregnancy, at 3, 6, 12 and 24 months of the second child). Qualitative content analysis indicated that in the initial period after the second child’s birth sibling rivalry expressed itself primarily through the firstborn’s jealousy towards parents. As the second child showed more motor and communication skills, sibling rivalry was also expressed through direct competition and disputes between siblings. Moreover, the data indicated a possible interrelation between parental relationship and the emergence of the firstborn’s jealousy towards parents, while sibling dispute and competition seemed to be related to the second child’s course of development. These findings bring an understanding of sibling rivalry as constitutive of sibling relationships and as part of the process of growth and transformation of the family as a whole.

Perceptions of the consumption of sexually-explicit material as an act of infidelity in the context of college romantic relationships and their connection to population variables

Plaza, Diego 01 May 2012 (has links)
This study sought to examine whether individuals perceive the consumption (i.e., viewing) of sexually-explicit material (SEM) as an act of infidelity. The study also looked into whether ethnicity, sexual orientation, religiosity, self-esteem, and femininity/masculinity influence this opinion. As an extension of the study, the participants' susceptibility for jealousy, general attitudes toward infidelity, attitudes toward SEM, opinion toward sexuality, and fear of abandonment were also analyzed. Social desirability was also used to find people's tendency to give socially desirable answers to questions related to sexuality. A statistical analysis of the study's results showed that religiosity significantly predicted opinions toward SEM as an act of infidelity. All other demographic values did not have significant predictability. An exploratory analysis showed that participants who think that viewing SEM is an acceptable behavior, are sexually liberal, use the internet for sexual purposes, and are less inclined to suffer jealousy in relationships were the most likely to believe that viewing SEM is not an act of infidelity.

Personnages et stéréotypes dans les romans d’Alain Robbe-Grillet / Characters and stereotypes in the work of Robbe-Grillet

Jassim, Hassan 01 July 2010 (has links)
This thesis aims at investigating the presence of stereotypical characters in the work of Robbe-Grillet retrieved from the paralitterature. Stereotypes that will be discussed in this work are: the romantic loner, wandering the city, the vigilante crime, the detective, the killer, the trio of novels of the jealousy, the prostitute, the perverse voyeur, the stripper, and the storyteller. After this “exploration”, we reach the flowing conclusion: as a whole, the work of Robbe-Grillet is rooted in the stereotype. However, we will discover that this is not an apology for stereotype. But simply taking into account its action in contemporary culture and the role of the latter in the elaboration discourse of the work.

Le désir érotique dans l’œuvre d’Alexandre Papadiamantis / The Erotic desire in the the Work of Alexandros Papadiamantis

Evzonas, Nicolas 14 January 2012 (has links)
Viewed for ages as an anaphrodite and « castrated » saint before being recognized as the most sensual writer in modern Greek literature, Alexandros Papadiamantis (1851-1911), prolific author of approximately one hundred and eighty short stories, and three historical novels, and deemed to be a Hellenic national treasure, is an antinomic artist who keeps intriguing critics and arousing open debates. The present thesis offers a reading of his complete work based on a controversial subject of which no systematic study has been undertaken before, despite a century of numerous literary comments : erotic desire, defined as the connexion with an objet of lust explicitely or implicitely defined as such, human or inhuman, alive or inanimated, and which rises a number of physical and/or psychological reactions, a complex network of meanings, sensations, meditations, actions and fantasies represented through words. This definition emphasizes the interweaving of drive and language and discerns between desire and love, the latter being rather a stasis of desire, and a fixation on the « other ». Our goal is to understand how eroticism thus defined is expressed throughout the texts, to point out the psychological issues associated with it, its interconnections with the narrative techniques, stylistic choices and linguistic particularities and the literary transformations it undergoes throughout the Papadiamantian opus, that is to say its mythic destiny, its ideological culmination and its thematic apotheosis, in short its outcome in writing.

Rhetorics, Cuckoldry, and Masculinity in The Winter's Tale

Lee, Pei-Ning Unknown Date (has links)
This thesis argues that Leontes’ jealousy manifests the problematic construction of masculine identity in Renaissance England. Leontes’ rhetorical inferiority to Hermione in the persuasion work resulted in his injured masculinity, which is exacerbated by the ambiguity of language in the play and Leontes’ sour memories of Hermione’s late acceptance to his marriage proposal, all of which sparkle Leontes’ jealousy and stimulate the collapse of his masculinity. Aside from rhetorics, this thesis also examines the anxiety of cuckoldry, a pre-existent, latent apprehension inherent in the construction of masculinity in early modern England. This anxiety leads to his unreasonable behavior and misjudgment. In order to rebuild his reputation, Leontes appropriates the public trial to retain absolute dominance over his wife and restore his stained honor. While the shift of the play’s focus to the younger generation signals a revision, Leontes’ tactful yet disturbing silence after Hermione’s resurrection reflects his resurfaced masculinity in the context of marriage and his inability to come to terms with the stigma of cuckoldry anxiety. Leontes’ jealousy is triggered by his lack of rhetorical skills essential to male confidence, a lack which is brutally magnified by his wife’s impeccable eloquence; his following accusation of Hermione’s adultery is precipitated and irrevocably executed by his fear of rumor and cuckoldry prevalent in his time. This thesis aims to shed light on the issue of Renaissance masculine anxiety and prove that Leontes’ jealousy is not just an unexplainable outburst of emotion, but rather an inevitably collective product of the construction of Renaissance masculine identity.
