Romantisk svartsjuka - ett inlärt beteende? : En kvalitativ analys av hur svartsjuka porträtteras i sju romantiska filmer / Romantic jealousy - a learned behavior? : A qualitative analysis of how jealousy is portrayed in seven romantic films

Kvist, Johanna, Timén Eriksson, Fredrik January 2023 (has links)
The idea of romance, intimate sexual relationships and romantic relationships has been distorted and subsequently redefined. Emotional- and affect related behaviour such as jealousy has been integrated into relationships and has been transformed into a sign of love and care. We deem this development problematic as jealousy can be considered a catalyst in terms of integration and expression of violence in romantic relationships. Consumption of different medial phenomenon is to be considered a primary source of information with special regards to children and adolescents. We claim that this is to be considered as something problematic as media and its depiction of norms and values may not reflect reality and instead contribute to the normalization of gender roles. Such gender roles play a significant role in the expression of what is known as romantic jealousy as they dictate socially acceptable behaviours with regards to men and women involved in a romantic relationship. The aim of this study was to examine if romantic jealousy and its depiction in modern films is being romanticized and to identify the normalization of destructive behaviour that constitutes a part of the phenomenon. Furthermore, the study examined our aim by trying to answer two questions 1) How is romantic jealousy depicted in modern films? 2) How are behaviours directly relating to romantic jealousy normalized in modern films? After thorough observation of seven films this study was able to conclude that jealousy is indeed romanticized in modern films. At the same time such romanticization contributes to the masking of destructive behaviours due a pervading narration of premiss which sees love as the ultimate goal. Such masking contributes to the consolidation of stereotypical gender roles and relating norms and values which in their turn can act as both a trigger and a catalyst for the expression of physical and emotional violence within a romantic relationship.

UNDERSTANDING FEMALE AGGRESSION AND MALE VICTIMIZATION FROM AN EVOLUTIONARY PSYCHOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE

Arnocky, Steven A. 10 1900 (has links)
<p>I examine female aggression as a competitive strategy for achieving reproductive success. In Chapter 1 an evolutionary theory of female aggression is presented. In Chapter 2 intrasexual competition for mates is considered by examining longitudinal links between aggression and dating behaviour among male and female adolescents. Results indicated that indirectly aggressive boys and girls were significantly more likely to have a dating partner at 1-year follow-up. Adolescents who reported being victimized by their peers were significantly less likely to have a dating partner at follow-up.</p> <p>In Chapter 3 I examine female mate-guarding behaviour. Results demonstrated that aggression toward peers and partners was greater among heterosexual females who perceived intrasexual competitors as being more attractive than them. These links were mediated by romantic jealousy. Females perceiving themselves as more attractive than peers frequently reported being targets of females’ peer-aggression. The findings of chapters 2 and 3 suggest that females actively compete to attain and retain mates.</p> <p>Chapter 4 examines implications for male victims of female aggression. We found that male victims of female partner violence were lower in testosterone than were non-victimized males. Participants held more negative attitudes toward male versus female victims. Males were less likely to seek-help and were more likely to minimize their perceived victimization. These findings suggest threats to male dominance and greater stigma likely reinforce males’ minimization and concealment of victimization.</p> <p>This dissertation contributes to the field of aggression by empirically demonstrating evolutionary-based motives and functions of female aggression as a strategy for bolstering reproductive fitness.</p> / Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Les personnages féminins dans "À la recherche du temps perdu" de Marcel Proust : Étude menée à partir de René Girard et de Marcel Mauss / The female characters in "In Search of Lost Time" of Marcel Proust : A study inspired by René Girard and Marcel Mauss

Chou, Shin-Yi 21 November 2014 (has links)
My research focuses on the female characters in In Search of Lost Time by Marcel Proust from the perspective of the "desire" of René Girard, the "gift" of Marcel Mauss and the "focus" of Gérard Genette. The variable focus in the narrative facilitates the comprehension of all relationships, connections and in particular the passion and the varied emotional projections of the hero for these women. He believes that his dreams will come true through these women. It will be the narrator, another "me" of the hero, who will demystify this feeling. In fact, his satisfaction is not in regard to the women themselves, but to the peripheral qualities that he can find from these women. Girard defends the desire of bad processes, he talks about the mimicry, rivalry and violence in desire which is also from the imagination. Girard's theory of mimetic desire composed of envy, jealousy and helpless hatred corresponds exactly to the unhealthy desire of the young hero for these women. The theory of Mauss regarding mutual recognition as being composed of "three obligations" which constitute a good social relationship. He defends not only the good processes like friendship, love and gift exchange, but also the topic of rivalry. It might seem that these two theories are contradictory, but Desire and the Gift coexist in fact in this novel, we can find them in our new interpretation. The hero's pursuit of friendship and social glory is defeated, however all pages on art shows us the philosophy of Proust, which is not possible by love is possible through literature. In Search of Lost Time is a gift of the author, it's a comprehension all about life.

To Know the One True God: Reconciling the God of the Old Testament with the God of the New Testament

Newman, Kelly D. 22 June 2006 (has links) (PDF)
There is a popular misconception in the world that Jehovah is too severe on occasion while Jesus Christ is always kind and merciful. The Latter-day Saint belief that Jehovah and Jesus are the same person presents a supposed conflict. There has not been much written on this subject by either non-Latter-day Saints or Latter-day Saints, thus, this thesis represents a unique contribution to a common perception prevalent in many Christian circles. The research of this thesis shows that the misconception is based on three problems: first, a misinterpretation of biblical stories in both the Old and New Testament; second, a lack of understanding biblical context and culture; and third, a lack of applying modern revelation to this subject. The research of this thesis focuses on these three areas in an effort to resolve this false perception. This thesis takes a deeper look into the acts of Jehovah and Jesus Christ as found in the Old and New Testaments respectively. Next, it looks as several doctrines related to this subject that have been revealed through latter-day prophets and incorporates them into the Old Testament. This analysis paints a broader picture of the Lord and illustrates that He was, indeed, merciful in the Old Testament but, at times, severe in the New Testament. Lastly, this thesis takes four of the most difficult Old Testament stories that seem to represent Jehovah as harsh, capricious, and unyielding, and puts them in their cultural setting. Though not every act can be completely explained, there is a high degree of similarity between Jehovah and Jesus. The study concludes, therefore, that much of the problem lies with perception and not with reality.

Moeder se belewenis van die aapassingsprobleme van die kleuter na die geboorte van 'n baba

Joubert, Hester Mensina 11 1900 (has links)
The birth of a sibling often results in a toddler displaying changes in behaviour, emotions and relationships. The aim of this qualitative study was to explore the mother's perception, experiences, as well as coping strategies of the toddler's adaptation problems, following the birth of a sibling. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with nine mothers. The study revealed that the mother's lack of knowledge and understanding of the developmental phase of the toddler, as well as the adaptation problems, manifested in misconceptions. These misconceptions affected her experiences of the adaptation problems, as well as how she managed it. The researcher concluded that mothers should be referred for parental guidance when adaptation problems are reported. Various recommendations to be used within parental guidance have been made. / Social Work / M.Diac. (Spelterapie-Rigting)

Moloi ga a na mmala (a witch has no colour) : a socio-religious study of witchcraft accusations in the Northern Province of South Africa

Kgatla, Selaelo Thias 11 1900 (has links)
Witchcraft discourse in South Africa has increasingly permeated all social structures, thereby becoming a real threat to the process of reconstruction and development. The neglect of witchcraft accusations and their resultant consequences can cause the country to lose all it gained as a result of the liberation struggle. In this study I examine the historical developments of witchcraft accusations around the world in general, and in South Africa in particular as well as the threats they pose to society. I analyse five broad areas: 1) The inborn h tendency to scapegoat; jealousy; and the role religion plays in the escalation of these problems; 2) The African world-view and its consequences on interpersonal relationships; 3) Colonial and missionary attempts to suppress the African world-view; 4) Ways and means of containing the conflicts arising from the witchcraft problem; and 5) Summary of findings. The research was occasioned by the untold suffering victims of witchcraft accusations have to undergo in the three Northern Provinces of South Africa. Because of the cruelty and misery such accusations cause the poor people of these rural provinces urgent attention is needed to contain them, especially since such accusations have not diminished despite all governmental efforts to curtail them. At the centre of witchcraft accusations there are stress, hatred, vindictiveness, and aspirations to become famous. The fear that one may be victimised by either being accused of witchcraft or being bewitched is very real even today. The relevance of the study is apparent when one considers the feelings of helplessness that paralyses the opponent of this carnage, such as government and the churches. A number of resources should thus be employed to counter would be put into it. This threat which is aggravated by the abject poverty prevalent in the rural communities of the three Provinces. The prevailing conditions of abject poverty play a definite role in the creation, promotion and escalation of the scourge. Policy makers should therefore have clear grasp of the extent to which poverty has influence on society in any effort to contain witchcraft accusations. I conclude the study by ~ecommending transformational paths to the Government, NonGovernmental Organisations and other Community Leaders to follow in attending to improve the lot of the poor. This is done by highlighting ten findings that emerged during the study. The findings were the result of analyses of archival records, literature and case studies on witchcraft accusations. Because the subject of witchcraft is so wide and emotive I have employed several sociological and anthropological theories to cover as wide a field as possible. The incorporation of so many theoretical approaches into the study presents on interpretive and analytical explanation of the causes, effects and containment of witchcraft accusations. The overall conclusion is encapsulated by the title of the study Moloi ga a na mmala (A witch has no colour). A witch remains unidentifiable, but witch-hunters and sniffers know how to identify their witches. Although the process remains paradoxical, it is practised on a daily basis. / Religious Studies & Arabic / D.Litt. et Phil. (Religious Studies)

An evolutionary psychology perspective on responsibility attributions for infidelity and relationship dissolution

Edmonson, Kindra Lynn 01 January 2011 (has links)
This study investigated responsibility attributions for a partner's emotional infidelity and for a partner's sexual infidelity, and the likelyhood that the victim or partner would end the relationship. This study found a significant relationship between responsibility attributions for a romantic partner's unfaithfulness and the likelihood the relationship would end: the stronger the attributions of personal responsibility the more likely the relationship would dissolve.

Homicide-suicide: common factors in South African Police Service members who kill their spouse or consort and themselves

Van Den Heever, Coenraad Willem 10 1900 (has links)
Homicide-Suicide (H-S) is a rare but violent event in which an individual commits homicide and thereafter commits suicide. The H-S phenomenon appears to be increasing among members of the South African Police Service (SAPS). Although research on H-S is sparse, several SA studies have implicated the SAPS as a high risk occupational group for such killings. However, no systematic research that focuses on police H-S has ever been conducted within the RSA. The aim of this thesis is to determine the underlying causes of police H-S killings. The current national study included thirty-eight (38) police H-S cases over a two-year period (2012-2013). The macro, meso, and micro levels of analysis were utilised to study this phenomenon and to test both the socio-cultural and intrapsychic explanations of H-S. A mixed method approach was utilised, which involved both qualitative and quantitative methodologies. Information on H-S was collected via document analysis and interviews with survivors of an H-S attack. The data obtained from the documents were coded on the SAPS “Homicide-Suicide Incidence Coding Form” and the results of this analysis were presented graphically in both tables and charts. Three interviews were conducted with the survivors of these attacks and were qualitatively analysed. The SAPS displayed an H-S incidence rate of 24.27 per 100 000 police officers. A typical police H-S perpetrator is likely to be a black African male who is 35 years old with a Grade 12 education. He would hold the rank of a constable and would have a history of domestic abuse. His victim would usually be an intimate partner of the same race who would be younger than him. She would be employed as an administrative clerk and would be shotand killed multiple times by her amorous jealous boyfriend due to a heated argument or quarrel. The service pistol would be used to commit both H-S killings. Four main themes emerged from the transcripts, namely: Patriarchal dynamics in H-S relationships, Financial issues and the patriarchal order, The death wish (“Thanatos”) of the perpetrator and the H-S survivors as double victims. On the macro level, partial support was found for social integration theory, while the meso and micro levels of analysis supported the psychodynamic perspective. / Psychology / D. Litt. et Phil.
