Varieties of Fundamentalism

De Sousa, Rebecca M. 04 January 2007 (has links)
The term “Fundamentalism” used as a comparative category within the academic study of religion has become problematic. Fundamentalism, is not one comprehensive movement but is, in fact, a phenomenon which encompasses a variety of beliefs, practices, and expectations. This thesis will explore the diversity of several different and distinct fundamentalist movements. I will discuss the natures of four Christian movements that have been labeled “fundamentalist” – Jehovah’s Witnesses, Christian Reconstructionists, Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson – on several key points, eschatology, political philosophy, as well as level of social involvement. I will then turn to fundamentalism as it is used as a category to describe a global phenomenon. I will discuss three different scholarly approaches by turning to the work of Bruce Lawrence, Mark Juergensmeyer, and Bruce Lincoln on the Islamic “fundamentalist” group al- Qaeda. Finally I will argue that the category “fundamentalism” can be best understood in terms of a family resemblance.

A Theatre (or 3) in Trieste

Kopare, Jerry January 2015 (has links)
An investigation of Piazza della Libertà in Trieste calls for a resurrection of its western garden along the harbour wall, and replacement of Sala Tripcovich, the former bus station which is used for theatre, with a new public building. The following project proposes a building with three small but different theatres for high-quality performances and lectures, a shared workshop, café, and a roof garden with views over the harbour wall. Its orientation on the site clarifies a path between the stations for trains and airport buses and the City's waterfront, and its V-shaped floor plans provide a wide range of spaces: from intimate and vertically entangled balconies to horisontally scattered rooms for gatherings, and slopes and terraces in the roof garden. Double-skin facades give a good acoustic environment, thermal insulation, and ventilation. The architecture intends to meaningfully reflect and catalyse the multiplicity of movements and city patterns at Piazza della Libertà.

Ogén, Ola January 2011 (has links)
The background to this report is the author’s ambition to understand individuals’ work situation, how it’s formed in interaction between the individual and factors in the work-setting. Such an ambition is well in line with the concept of Human-Technology-Organization (HTO), a cross-scientific approach that puts a system-oriented perspective on how human, technolog-ical and organizational factors interact within work systems. The aim of this report was to explore managers’ work-situation and generate an understanding of it from an HTO-perspective by using an organizational model as a framework for an interview guide and to analyze the work situation from an HTO-perspective following the ques-tions at issue: 1. How does the managers experience their work situation? 2. How can an HTO-perspective contribute to the understanding and potential of im-provement of the work situation? The organizational model used in the report is Porras & Robertson’s (1992) "Factors constituting the organizational work setting". The model summarizes and describes the organiza-tional, social, physical and technological factors that up until 1992 had been identified by contemporary research within the "Organizational Development" field as important for organizational change. Four managers’ work situation was studied at the company Södra Cell Mörrum. The report’s methodological approach is of an explorative qualitative nature and has been conducted by the design of an interview guide based on the organizational model described above and semi structured interviews to explore the managers’ work situation. The results give a detailed description of how the managers experience their work situation och how it is affected by the interaction of the factors human-technlogy-organization. In analysis, it’s illustrated how: - the organization’s strategies and structure in interaction with the work flow and tech-nology contributes to the managers’ exposure of stress in their work-situation. - the organizational structure interacts with the individual and vice versa, how the managers’ fuzzy work-description contributes to how they themselves in interaction with other parts of the organization define it and creates informal organizational structure an interaction processes. - the use of technology is affected by its design, by how the organization reinforces its use and by individual characteristics. It has been shown how technology affects the organization’s strategical effort and disposition. - organizational factors such as goals and reward systems interacts with and affect behaviors at the workplace. The analysis also shows how informal aspects of the organization, such as it’s history and culture affects behaviors. The conclusions of the report are: -that an HTO-perspective is a suitable approach to create a broad understanding of the factors which interaction affects work systems. Such an understanding constitutes a good starting point for development and improvement of work systems. - that the result encourages further use and development of the methodological approach of using Porras & Robertsons’ model as a framework for an understanding of the individuals’ work situation.

Computational foundations of phenomenology

Lopes, Jesse Daniel 03 November 2020 (has links)
The purpose of the dissertation is to investigate the degree of compatibility of two fields: phenomenology and computational cognitive science. The former field proposes to explicate all structures of conscious experience in terms of conscious experience. The latter proposes to explicate all structures of consciousness partly in terms of unconscious causal factors. These endeavors have been seen as mutually exclusive. I put forward the thesis that the original formulation of phenomenology may be seen to have a computational theory of mind in the background. To this end, I show in the first chapter that the founder of phenomenology articulated, prior to founding phenomenology, a computational theory of mind in terms of its two modern theses: (1) syntactic representations, and (2) their causal generation and interaction. Insofar as I am able to provide sufficient evidence for this thesis, I am theoretically licensed to proceed to trace its influence on the founding of phenomenology proper. On the above textual basis, I proceed in the second chapter to discuss Husserl's methodology in the founding work of phenomenology - the Logical Investigations. I there show how my compatibility thesis may be true; indeed, I demonstrate that formal evidence is the causal product of what Husserl calls “unsere Denkmaschine” – a thought-machine that manipulates syntactic symbols. The third chapter discusses several arguments against (Humean) associationism, and by extension against (Churchlandian) connectionism, and show that they demand in their stead computationalism, both on account of the nature of the explananda as well as for the sake of theoretical completeness. In the fourth chapter, I discuss, with a view to deepening my interpretation, the much-celebrated property (since Chomsky) of productivity. This leads to a discussion of the methodological relation between “universal grammar,” as it appears directly in the 4th Logical Investigation, and the computational theory of mind. In the fifth chapter, I discuss how Husserl’s descriptive treatment of the propositional attitudes (as act-matters & act-qualities), nominalization, and categorial intuition may be supplemented on the explanatory side by a language of thought.

Jerry Herman's Leading Ladies

Mansell, John 01 January 2010 (has links)
Jerry Herman is celebrated for his ability to showcase strong leading female roles in his canon of work that spans some fifty years. In writing such strong female characters, he must produce strong male counterparts to these women who can communicate on their level and not become overpowered by the women's presence. I was cast in the musical revue, It's Today: An Evening of Jerry Herman, conceived, directed, and choreographed by Earl D. Weaver. My portion of the revue explored Herman's leading male roles of Cornelius from Hello, Dolly!; Mack from Mack and Mabel; Colonel Tadeusz Boleslav Stjerbinsky from The Grand Tour; and Albin from La Cage aux Folles, My analysis of these specific leading male roles uncovers how their relationships with their leading ladies defines their character in each of the musicals for which they were written. It also helped me define multiple characters in the course of a revue with no plot or storyline. Though all these male characters provided me with challenges, my greatest task was defining Albin in La Cage aux Folles. He provides a unique perspective in that he exemplifies a combination of both male/female characteristics. He is a man who regularly portrays a woman onstage in a drag club as well as assuming a female role in a homosexual relationship. He serves as the 'leading lady' for La Cage aux Folles though his character is considered a 'leading man' role. He is the consummate representation of all Jerry Herman leading roles, and embodies many of the themes Herman utilizes in all his work.

For the Love of God?! Is there a place for Gay Christians between Faith and Fundamentalism?

Prentiss, Apryl D. 05 May 2010 (has links)
Drawing from observation, autoethnography, ethnographic research and audio-taped interviews, this thesis explores the complicated and emotionally charged relationship between homosexuality and Christianity. The current culture war being waged in the media between the Religious Right and members of the LGBT community often results in the isolation and rejection of those who would define themselves as gay Christians. This thesis explores the role of the Bible as it informs and catalyzes this war and other foundational beliefs used as weapons in this rhetorical conflict. Additionally, this thesis analyzes the current battle between the church and the social movement for change in light of the historical battles fought over similar movements. The rhetoric of Christianity, specifically Fundamentalist rhetoric, has been emphatically defended and then dramatically changed in every such battle. Is this a possible resolution for today’s current battle? The thesis explores the historical basis and current application of rhetorical effects on this conflict through the author’s insight as a veteran of both worlds, interviews with major players in the battle such as Randy Thomas and Kristin Tremba of Exodus International and interviews with people who step on the battlefield everyday as pastors, congregants or observers in the fight. With each interview or rhetorical analysis, the viability of dialogue between these two groups is questioned and investigated.
