The Preaching and Pastoral Ministry of Charles Jerry Vines: A Model of Evangelistic Focus

Pennington, Jeffrey Donovan 16 May 2011 (has links)
This dissertation examines and evaluates the preaching and pastoral ministry of Charles Jerry Vines as a model of evangelistic focus. Chapter 1 introduces the preaching and pastoral ministry of Jerry Vines as a model of evangelistic focus. The author addresses the broad concern of the evangelistic ineffectiveness of the Southern Baptist Convention and then establishes warrant for the particular qualities of Vines' preaching and pastoral ministries in regard to their connection to his evangelistic results. Chapter 2 provides a biography of Charles Jerry Vines. Since very little biographical information has ever been formally collected on his life and ministry, this dissertation gives considerable attention to a thorough treatment of these matters. This chapter delves into the significant details of Vines' life to establish him as a worthy model of evangelistic focus. Chapter 3 presents the theological framework that guides his methodology of evangelism. This chapter both describes and evaluates his theological underpinnings. It focuses on his views of theological method, revelation, atonement, pneumatology, soteriology, and eschatology. Chapter 4 offers an overview of Vines' approach to expository preaching, focusing primarily on an element of his sermon structure that he calls an "evangelistic twist." It surveys how the twist is used in his preaching from texts that span from Genesis to Revelation. It discusses principles for the twist that lead a preacher to stay within the meaning of the text along with pitfalls to avoid while formulating the twist. Chapter 5 examines Vines' preaching and teaching through the book of Acts. The bases for this chapter are his most recent sermon series that he preached through the book of Acts along with his Sunday School Curriculum Acts Alive. It discusses Vines' hermeneutical method, his guarded prescriptive hermeneutic for Acts, whether or not his dispensational view weighs in on the book's application for personal evangelism, and a discussion of timeless truths pertinent to personal evangelism for the local church. Chapter 6 offers concluding remarks that summarize the most pertinent findings of my research. It discusses qualities of Vines' ministry worth emulating along with other matters of consideration.

In order to do that, we have developed some basic notions of the scientific investigation theory to determine the degree of assurance, certainty and scientificity that go with some of the descriptions, metaphors, models and theories concerning the philosophy of mind. After that, we organized an itinerary of the main models and metaphors in mind research, from the birth of 19th century Psychology to the Cognitive Sciences of the last three decades. We have identified the alternance criteria regarding the metaphors and models that have been used in research about the mind. Then, we reached what we have called a triple dominion of models, which has been used along the 20th and in the beginning of the 21st centuries: the representational and information processing model, deriving from the Cognitive Sciences; the Cognitive Neuroscience, which resumes philosophical issues such as mind and intentionality; and the biological model, specifically the one concerning Evolutionist Psychology. We have tried to demonstrate the epistemological and methodological bases and the competences of this new dominion of models, as well as their limits and reach. In this way, we come to the thesis itself: the proposition that Jerry A. Fodor s representational and modular notion of the mind is a perspective that converges on such triple dominion. We understand that Fodor s contributions are basic for a research program in the philosophy of mind, considering that the program aims at defining methodological strategies and it also reviews essential epistemological issues. Regarding the discussions about the mind, Fodor emphasizes that psychology requires philosophical support and that there should be a flow of theses from psychology to philosophy as well; in this way, reductionist theories and conceptual illusions would be avoided. Fodor s epistemological contribution is a reference regarding the explanation of mental states, avoiding the proliferation of terms and notions.

This study aimed to show defined custom orchestration effects found in Hollywood film industry soundtracks, via resources of instrumentation and orchestral tone established by Jerry Goldsmith. Under a chronological prospect, we outlined the development of techniques and formal method of orchestration through scores, at the same time with the evolution of instrumental sets in European music history. The spreading of symphonic music¿s boundaries and the technical innovation developed by the great composers became reference to us to focus to the first original music composers in the classical Hollywoodian cinema, and here we run into the first movies that depict the supernatural and the unknown mysteries of mankind, specially by Bernard Herrmann. The required tricks to creat a new orchestral sound which intended to play monsters and aliens in the music track ¿ human suffering as well ¿ turn up, as a last resort, our last mission: Jerry Goldsmith¿s legacy and the effects of the orchestral sounds on film / Mestrado / Fundamentos Teoricos / Mestre em Música

Polarized Calabi-Yau threefolds in codimension 4

Georgiadis, Konstantinos January 2014 (has links)
This work concerns the construction of Calabi-Yau threefolds in codimension 4. Based on a study of Hilbert series, we give a list of families of Calabi-Yau threefolds which may exist in codimension 3 and codimension 4. Using birational methods, we construct Calabi-Yau threefolds that realize several of the listed families. The main result is that the cases we consider in codimension 4 lie in two different deformation components.

Varieties of Fundamentalism

De Sousa, Rebecca M. 04 January 2007 (has links)
The term “Fundamentalism” used as a comparative category within the academic study of religion has become problematic. Fundamentalism, is not one comprehensive movement but is, in fact, a phenomenon which encompasses a variety of beliefs, practices, and expectations. This thesis will explore the diversity of several different and distinct fundamentalist movements. I will discuss the natures of four Christian movements that have been labeled “fundamentalist” – Jehovah’s Witnesses, Christian Reconstructionists, Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson – on several key points, eschatology, political philosophy, as well as level of social involvement. I will then turn to fundamentalism as it is used as a category to describe a global phenomenon. I will discuss three different scholarly approaches by turning to the work of Bruce Lawrence, Mark Juergensmeyer, and Bruce Lincoln on the Islamic “fundamentalist” group al- Qaeda. Finally I will argue that the category “fundamentalism” can be best understood in terms of a family resemblance.

Va’ glor ni på? : En analys kring mediebilden av intellektuell funktionsnedsättning / What are you starring at? : An analysis revolving around the media image of mental disability

Thelander, Emma January 2011 (has links)
Background                                                                                                                                     In 2009 ICA, one of Sweden’s largest food store chain, produced a series of commercials in a campaign which aimed to challenge prejudices about mental disability. The commercials started a lively online debate, and raised questions regarding both the purpose and ethics of these productions. Purpose                                                                                                                                              The ambition of this study was to examine how the people that participated in the online debate perceived ICA’s three first commercials in the campaign. The aim was also to analyze whether they have generated any consequences for the perception of mental disability. Method                                                                                                                                                   A largely qualitative approach have been used, since the aim has been to reach deeper understanding rather than statistically ensured results. Critical discourse analysis was used to analyze the study’s data which consisted of about 80 blog posts with related comments. Results                                                                                                                                                The study concludes that the commercials have been perceived in many different ways when it comes to purpose and ethics. The results also indicate that ICA’s advertisement both reproduce and challenge existing prejudices towards people with mental disabilities. The company’s initiative has not fulfilled its full purpose, but it constitutes an important first step to reach normalization for this group of society.
