Nesse caminho, centramo-nos preferencialmente nos discursos jesuíticos, pois caracterizam um espaço em que a tópica está articulada a uma hermenêutica particular do Novo Mundo, indissociável dos princípios de colonização e conversão defendidos pelos inacianos na sua experiência evangelizadora. Através da Companhia de Jesus - instituição religiosa de grande prestígio e poder político junto à Coroa portuguesa -, a tópica do canibalismo fornece argumentos capazes de justificar políticas prudentes em relação à nova terra e aos novos súditos da Coroa, ao mesmo passo que fornece parâmetros para a invenção da realidade do Novo Mundo. Em suma, esta tese é sobre a difícil inserção daquilo que se convencionou chamar de canibal da América portuguesa na História cristã e sobre a difícil adequação da História cristã ao mesmo / Abstract: The aim of this thesis is to investigate the extension of the topic of cannibalism in its political and theological dimensions within the discourses on Portuguese America and its inhabitants during the XVIth century. It focuses on the Jesuit discourses. The Jesuits provide a field where the topic is articulated to a particular hermeneutics of the New World, which is inseparable from the principles of colonisation and conversion that they defend The topic of cannibalism simultaneously allow Company of Jesus to gather convincing arguments in defence of its patterns of prudent politics and provide parameters for the invention of the New World reality. In sum, this thesis is on the difficult insertion of the so called cannibals of Portuguese America in Christian History and the adaptation of such History to cope with them / Doutorado / Doutor em História

Identificados como principais opositores ao projeto catequético de conversão, fundado no entendimento de mundo cristão sustentado pela concepção cosmológica do orbis christianus quinhentista, os guias espirituais desse grupo indígena foram considerados os representantes e, portanto, operadores da vontade demoníaca agora presente na América portuguesa. Pretende-se, pois, discutir os motivos que levaram os inacianos a realizarem uma leitura que resultasse nessa alteridade, capaz de conceber os caraíbas como principais adversários do processo de cristianização da sociedade brasileira que começava a se formar no século XVI / Abstract: The aim of the work is to analyze the difficulties encountered by the Society of Jesus missionaries in relation to catechesis Tupinambá, at the presence of the Caribbean in the villages. Identified as the main opponents to the conversion catechetical project, based on the understanding of the Christian world sustained by cosmological conception of the Orbis Christianus during the sixteenth century, the spiritual leaders of this group were considered indigenous representatives and therefore demonic operators will, now present in Portuguese America. It is intended, therefore, to discuss the reasons that led the Ignatian to perform a reading that would result in this otherness, capable of conceiving Caribbean as the main opponents of the Brazilian society Christianization process that started to form in the sixteenth century / Resume: Le but de ce travail est d'analyser les difficultés retrouvées par les missionnaires de la Compagnie de Jésus en ce qui concerne la catéchèse Tupinambá, à la présence des Caraibes dans les villages. Procura-se compreender esta construção discursiva dos seiscentos tendo em mente o seu caráter explicitamente profético. Para tanto, recorre-se a uma análise das referências e citações presentes neste texto do jesuíta. Aborda-se primordialmente os usos dos escritos clássicos antigos, dos textos bíblicos do Antigo Testamento, além de profecias canônicas e não canônicas, os quais Vieira faz uso para construir um discurso que, segundo ele mesmo, o dariam a chave para a compreensão do Futuro de Portugal e do Mundo / Abstract: The objetv of this dissertationis to analyse the unfinished text - History of the Future by the luso-brazilian jesuit father António Vieira. My purpose is to depict the discoursive construction of the seventeenth century, having in mind its explicity prophetic chacacter. I will proceed with the analysis of the references and quotations found in the jesuit' s texto I will specically consider the usages of the old classic writtings, the biblical texts ofthe Old Testament and furthermore the canonical and noncanonical prophecies wich Vieira used in order to construct a discourse that according to his own words woud provide the key to the understading of the future of Portugal and the world / Mestrado / Mestre em História
