This essay proposes a another reading on indigenous authorship literature published in Brazil through the production by cacique Juvenal Payayá. Whose productions thematize on the recovering process from the land, the construction of the narrative presents at the indigenous way of writing about themselves, as well as questioning the place designated to the literature produced by these authors. In this scenario, I intend to present a discussion about the indigenous authorship literature, analyzing Payayá´s literature productions. The political/literary production by Juvenal Payayá highlights a self-knowledge and simultaneously reopens theoretical discussions that incorporates a literary and political autonomy, emphasizing the Payayá Peoples’ place into the indigenous history and into the Brazilian literary history, because, just like other innumerous indigenous tribes in the Brazilian Northeast, the Payayá people dealt with several territorial displacements in order to survive. Hence, I have gotten interested throughout this path in how Juvenal Payayá innovates by dislocating the indigenous authorship literature representation which is consolidated, in general, as mythological, and designated it to places where this literature is considered “less important”. Therefore, Juvenal Payayá elucidates a new arrangement to the indigenous authorship literature and exposes to his reader new thematic possibilities when produces a literature that transforms itself into daily scenes. Thus, Payayá presents an indigenous authorship literature as a Payayá People´s reaffirmation, an ethical recognition, a recovering of the land and a written that transforms itself beyond the indigenous myth literature.

Juvenal, Martial and the Augustans: an analysis of the production and reception of satiric poetry in Flavian Rome

Pass, Angelica 30 August 2012 (has links)
This thesis is about the creation, reception and dissemination of poetry in Flavian Rome as depicted in the satires of Juvenal and the epigrams of Martial. It deals with their relationship with their Augustan predecessors, especially Horace. It discusses the rhetoric of decline that pervades early Juvenalian satire, and to some degree, Martial’s epigrams, especially in relation to an idealized and self-proclaimed Golden Age several generations before. It argues that this decline is representative of a political decline since the Age of Augustus and feelings of disenfranchisement of upper-class men under autocratic rule. It also examines the embeddedness of Flavian literature within its urban social context and the ways in which Martial and Juvenal handle the increasing interconnectedness of life and art in relation to their Augustan predecessors. There are three chapters, entitled Amicitia and Patronage, the Recusatio, and Locating the Poetic Feast. / Graduate

Juvenal Galeno and its popular songs: reflection of the romantic educational purpose under the spirits of eclectical spiritualism (1836 - 1889) / Juvenal Galeno e suas canÃÃes populares: reflexo do propÃsito educacional romÃntico sob os auspÃcios do espiritualismo eclÃtico (1836 - 1889)

Anxieties for making Brazil a nation have boosted the formation of intellectualized middle sectors capable of conducting the human formative ideal necessary for the so - called Brazilian civilizational project in the nineteenth century. The Brazilian histori ography records, for the period, several cases and actions of intellectuals and groups, which go well with what can be called an intellectual exercise as a political attitude. But there are cases in which the intellectual exercise was also an eminently edu cational attitude, given that the ideal of nationality pursued was imprinted by the civilizational codes only achievable by the formative processes, being these the press or the school. It should be noted that the period we are dealing with, here delimited from the ends of the Regency, registers several opposing forces. Among those based on the new ideas whose nuances were in the Illustration, we emphasize the romantic side strongly influenced by the Eclectic Spiritualism, French philosophical current estab lished by Victor Cousin. Brazilian romantic intellectuals, advocating the defense of Cousin's ideas, were able to establish a debate with traditionalism, alleging the need to construct the homeland, from the institution of its education, its culture, inclu ding literature, notably poetry, and, above all, , Of its history. It can be said, therefore, that some of these intellectuals delegated to themselves a social and pedagogical mission because in the said project of country they had a clear understanding of the forging of the new man with a new mentality, unraveled from the colonialist mentality. They developed, therefore, the figure of the intellectual educator well characterized like writer of mission. Many were the intellectuals and their defenses, howeve r, it is known that the ideal of romantic education, based on Eclectic Spiritualism, was part of the tonic and desires of all who launched this mission. The poet and folklorist Juvenal Galeno, with his literature, in the form of popular songs, is very well characterized as the intellectual who shared this mentality and who, therefore, made of literature its educative mission.
