No romance The Awakening (1899), de Kate Chopin, a busca da individualidade e da liberdade financeira e sexual da protagonista Edna Pontellier fundem-se à tentativa de realização do amor extraconjugal, que, frustradas, a levam ao suicídio. Essa busca frustrada carrega em si contradições históricas inerentes à ideologia burguesa, que promete igualdade a todos, mas não permite a realização concreta de tal promessa. Essas contradições se fazem presentes não apenas no tema do romance, mas em sua estrutura formal: o recorte sócio-histórico do romance implica uma série de fissuras em sua estrutura, também reveladoras de contradições ideológicas. Para a análise dessa obra, faz-se necessário o estudo das relações sociais traçadas no romance e suas implicações estéticas, como a questão do narrador onisciente e do desenvolvimento da narrativa, os limites desta, bem como os limites da ideologia da modernização. / In The Awakening (1899) the protagonist\'s search for individuality, economic and sexual freedom merge with the attempt of finding fulfillment outside her marriage. When these possibilities are frustrated, she is drawn to suicide. This unsuccessful quest carries within itself the historical contradictions which are inherent to the bourgeois ideology, which promises equality for all but eventually fails to keep its promise. These contradictions are present not only in the content of the novel, but in its formal structure as well: the historical and social frame of the novel entangles several breaks in its structure, which also reveal ideological contradictions. In order to analyze this novel, it is mandatory to study the social relationships established in it and its aesthetic implications, as well as the question of the omniscient narrator and of how the narrative unfolds; the limits of the latter as well as the limits of the ideology of modernization.

Our theory and critical resources are supported by works written by Per Seyersted(1979) and Nadilza Moreira(2003) both references names for Chopin's scholarship.Besides, we used Beauvoir' (1970), Woolf' (2012) and Showalter's(1979) critical studies to help us to develop our understanding of the 19th century social-hisorical women's context in the USA. For the study of representation we used the concept fromAna Gabriela Macedo e Ana Luisa Amaral(2005). To support our analysis on the role of the narrative voice we used Chris Baldick(1991) Our conclusion is that: Edna Pontellier represents a multiplicity of images and they are presented to the reader as the narrative develops itself showing Edna's multiples “awakenings” as a woman in transition. / O foco de nossa pesquisa está voltado para Edna Pontellier, a protagonista da novela, O Despertar; Edna uma dona de casa do século XIX que lutou pela emancipação como sujeito. Nossa fundamentação teórica se apóia nas obras escritas por Per Seyersted (1979) e Nadilza Moreira (2003) ambos nomes de referências nos estudos sobre Chopin. Além disso, usamos Beauvoir '(1970), Woolf’ (2012) e os estudos críticos de Showalter para nos ajudar a desenvolver a compreensão do contexto sócio-histórico das mulheres do século XIX nos EUA. Para o estudo da representação utilizamos os estudos de Ana Gabriela Macedo e Ana Luisa Amaral (2005). Finalmente, para apoiar a nossa análise sobre o papel da voz narrativa na novela nos amparamos nos estudos de Chris Baldick (1991). Concluimos que: a representação da protagonista, Edna Pontellier, não é una, mas múltipla e caminha juntamente com os diversos “despertares” vivenciados pela personagem ao longo da trama narrativa.

A autora norte-americana Kate Chopin (1850-1904) é conhecida por sua vasta produção de contos ambientados no estado de Louisiana, os quais exibem uma representação das peculiaridades locais. Em vários dos contos, Chopin focaliza a cultura Cajun e propõe uma representação ficcional da língua daquela comunidade (língua crioula Cajun) através da fala dos personagens, como ocorre em "No baile acadiano". Dividida em três capítulos, a presente dissertação almeja investigar se a questão da regionalidade, representada por marcas da cultura local e de identidade cultural dos personagens, influencia na permanência de expressões em língua francesa e língua Cajun no processo tradutório do conto At the ‘Cadian Ball para a língua portuguesa: "No baile acadiano". A pesquisa permitiu constatar que houve influência das questões culturais e de regionalidades na tradução do conto, uma vez que o uso da língua transmite informação social, aspecto exemplificado durante a alternância de códigos entre os personagens dependendo do interlocutor. So, it is noticeable that the translator's attitude (Denise Mariné) can be considered as respectful in relation to the author and to linguistic aspects that would be lost if such sentences and/or expressions/phraseologisms were translated into Portuguese.

Kate O'Brien was one of Ireland's best female writers; moreover, she was one of the first to centre on the Catholic Middle Class in her writing, as this class was long neglected. O'Brien was famous for her women-oriented books in which she portrayed the lives of women of the rising bourgeoisie of Ireland at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth century. We can trace a certain development in O'Brien's writing, throughout her career she becomes more radical and comes to voice feminist notions about women being equal to men as well women's seeking independence from the world dominated by men. Most of her novels are family-oriented and may be called Bildungsromans as the protagonists, which apart from two books are all female, develop and grow to maturity and learn to understand the world and their place in it. As this thesis examined how the women in O'Brien's novels reflect the situation of women in her home country, it is apparent that throughout her life the writer became more radical and sceptical towards the fate of women in Ireland. Therefore, in her first written pieces she portrays women in their traditional roles as dutiful wives, daughters, or mothers. At Home in the World: Globalism in Modern Irish Writing

Because the first part of the twentieth century in Ireland was marked with nationalist milestones like the Easter Rising and the Anglo-Irish War, most accounts of modern Irish literature and culture are nation-centered. This dissertation offers a new understanding of modern Irish writing by placing national identity in conversation with global consciousness, a burgeoning concept in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. In particular, this project explores three aspects of globalism: the attachments to foreign countries that Irish writers form; the ways in which these attachments affect their relationships with Ireland; and their subsequent articulation of global consciousness based on these transnational experiences. The introduction provides a critical and historical context for the project by negotiating between the established discipline of Irish Studies and the emerging field of Irish Diaspora Studies. Each chapter then investigates an Irish writer whose work indicates a relationship between global and national consciousness. The Irish-Argentine writer William Bulfin and the evolution of his relationship with gauchos, as it is suggested in his Tales of the Pampas, forms the subject of the next chapter. The second chapter juxtaposes Helen Waddell's The Princess Splendour and Other Stories, which retells fairytales from the Middle and Far East as well as from Ireland, with Lady Gregory's and Douglas Hyde's nationalistic collections of Irish folklore. The third chapter investigates the connection between the feminist underpinnings of Kate O'Brien's novels with the transnational movements that frequently accompany them. The fourth chapter examines the cosmopolitan imperative of Brian Moore's Irish-American novels. Finally, in the epilogue I briefly suggest the ways in which contemporary Irish writing extends the projects begun by these earlier figures.

Strangers at Home: Threshold Identities in Contemporary Irish Women’s Writing

This dissertation examines how contemporary Irish women writers dismantle national conceptions linking Irish women to the hearth and home by offering an alternate version of women’s lived experience, which nationalist ideologies have simplified. I consider how these writers define “home”—the domestic, the familiar, the intimate—as complicated by sexuality, exile, and violence. Using Freud’s theory of the uncanny as a lens, I analyze how these writers question established social relations in order to uncover uneasy relationships to self, home, and homeland. In my project, postcolonial theory and transnational feminisms, coupled with trauma theory, facilitate the contextualization of the uncanny as a response to the hybrid identities, dislocations, and effects of violence on gender roles within the nation. The first two chapters examine Edna O’Brien’s later fiction, which unsettles conceptions of the nation by emphasizing the experiences of marginal figures, thereby questioning who belongs within the nation’s borders. The next two chapters on the fiction of Jennifer Johnston and Mary Beckett reveal how the crossing of the public into the private sphere exposes a paradoxical homespace that is both haven and prison for rich Anglo-Irish Dubliners and working-class Catholics in Belfast. The final chapter on Kate O’Riordan’s novels explores issues of exile, alienation, and trauma through a multi-generational lens, revealing how memories of “home” and fraught parent-child relationships at once hinder and facilitate identity formation. In the epilogue, I briefly discuss how contemporary Irish poetry could address the issues raised by the works of fiction examined in my project.
