Campirano Sanchez, Manuel 01 June 2011 (has links)
This thesis analyses the modes of narration in the 1978 novel Casa de campo by Chilean writer José Donoso (1924-96), an overlooked aspect of its neobaroque aesthetic. It surveys some of the most important conceptualizations of the baroque as well as of the neobaroque, utilizing Severo Sarduy‟s theory of the neobaroque in order to examine the text‟s plurality of points of view and narrative modes. Not only does Donoso employ first- and third-person narrations in Casa de campo, the narrative voice seems, simultaneously, omniscient and limited, intrusive and objective, often unreliable, and frequently self-conscious. A wide range of narrative techniques appear in the novel, including free indirect discourse, stream of consciousness, interior monologue, and passages reminiscent of the so-called testimonio. This plurality of points of view and narrative modes constitute Donoso‟s revolt against contemporary literary conventions, and exemplify the diversity of the neobaroque. / Graduate

La voix dans A LA RECHERCHE DU TEMPS PERDU de Marcel Proust / The Voice in Marcel Proust’s Remembrance of Things PastAthias, Béatrice 30 November 2018 (has links)
From its very first pages, the narrator of Remembrance of Things Past evokes the voice of his mother as she reads François le Champi, to the great pleasure of the child still within. The vestiges of the enveloping, soft voice left by this initial reading, which will reappear at many points in the text, lead us to question the effect of a text carried by such a voice as well as its connection with that of the narration. The rich and complex relationship that the nostalgic hero maintains with other characters' voices also comes into play, frequently commented on by the Narrator. This study therefore looks at the voice in Remembrance both from a thematic and poetic standpoint. We have already looked at the various forms of dissatisfaction engendered by a universe that continually flees those seeking to comprehend it. But we have also considered the devices permitting the hero to achieve a sense of fullness through listening, including the synesthesia and reception of an untranslated otherworldly voice, source of literary inspiration. We have alsoexamined the experiential modalities of the voice belonging to a hero-Narrator marked by auditive hyperesthesia : whether he allows to resonate within him the voices he adores, those which persecute him by brutally insisting on his conformity, thereby threatening his genius. This leads as well to a consideration of the writing of Remembrance as an act which, while incorporating the oral exchange, reduces it to silence, the voice appearing in the text solely through the latter's sound amplification.

Narrating Sentiment in Mason & Dixon: A Modernist Novel of FeelingUpton, Creon January 2007 (has links)
This thesis approaches Thomas Pynchon's novel, Mason & Dixon, in terms of its narrative structure and sentimental content. Pynchon is generally regarded as a challenging and innovative writer, so narrative is an unsurprising subject for a study of his most recent work; sentimentalism, on the other hand, is a far cry from traditional approaches to his writing. Despite this, however, as I outline in my introduction, sentimentalism has long hovered around the edges of Pynchon's work. In Mason & Dixon it takes a privileged role as the dominating mood of the novel's final section, "Last Transit." This sentimentalism, far from being the retrogressive move that the term might imply, is bound up in a radically reconceived approach to the narrating voice of novelistic discourse, whence comes the unifying feature of my study. In Mason & Dixon, I identify this unity in the novel's referencing of film, long-established as one of Pynchon's major cultural influences. In my first chapter, I outline my approach to sentimentalism and narrative-in the modern and, specifically, modernist novel, as well as in contemporary film. In chapter two I outline my conception of Mason & Dixon's narrator as emulating film's visual representations; in chapter three, I explore this narrator as a "radically underdetermined" identity, who represents, not a linguistically embodied subjectivity, but rather representation as its own agent, as representation itself. In my fourth and final chapter, I examine how this narrator manages the sentimental content of the novel, concentrating on the character of Mason.

This work aims to elaborate a comparative analysis of Relato de um certo Oriente (1989) and Cinzas do Norte (2005), both published by Milton Hatoum, in order to relate the fragmentation of the narrative voice, present in both novels, with the articulation between traffic and immobility which outlines the trajectory of the main characters. The starting point of this work consists of reflecting on matters of traffic and identity, present in both novels; bearing in mind that the books’ main characters are migrants, wanderers and expatriates; seeking to establish, through writing, a meaning for their existence. The importance of such reflection grows, as the search for oneself and the meaning of life is multiplied in the contemporary Brazilian narrative. The question that is raised, in this case, is the meaning of this traffic and the relational dimension that it creates, on one hand, between the way the subject is represented by the construction of space; and, on the other hand, between the representation of space and the subjective dimension that constitutes it. Therefore, the hypothesis defended by this work is that the search for the (re)construction of identity motivates, in these two novels, the mobility of their characters in different spaces / CAPES/DS

The representations of Sojourner Truth in The Narrative of Sojourner TruthSalie, Shazia January 2020 (has links)
Magister Artium - MA / I read representations of Sojourner Truth in her Spiritual Narrative, The Narrative of Sojourner Truth with a focus on the portrayal of her unconventional character, through a close analysis of language, structure, photographs and narrative voice. Truth’s editor Olive Gilbert’s raises questions about whether the daguerreotype offers a more accurate form of representation than text. I explore the similarities and differences between visual and written portraits in representations of Truth as a unique figure. I question critical readings of Sojourner Truth’s dress in photographs as conservative, reading instead for a combination of conservative and subversive elements. I suggest that her interest in aesthetic forms such as dress and décor is symbolic of her yearning for home, her heritage, her agency, and unique taste. Her many references to her family indicate that she was more than just an empowered figure, but also one who still grieved. I read Truth’s description of domestic space as representing ambivalently, both her sense of loss, and her attempts to acquire agency. I consider how Truth attempts to recreate a sense of family and belonging through fragments of memory. In my reading of how she questions and extends conventional notions of family and community, I explore how she adapts and includes song, and quotations from the Bible in her sermons, by drawing on elements of African folktale and music. Most critics focus on Truth’s strong voice as an activist, there is little attention to the significance of spiritual solitude for her reimagining of community. I suggest that Truth offers alternative ideas of community as fluid rather than as fixed in one place. I explore how her ideas challenge the notion of nation as exclusive. I consider the genre of The Narrative by analyzing Olive Gilbert’s role as editor and writer. I propose that her role in The Narrative is a more complex one than suggested by critics, as it challenges conventional concepts of autobiography creating a conversation between two voices and lives.

The Tripartite Tributaries of UshCognevich, Alicia 17 December 2011 (has links)
Inspired by Vladimir Nabokov’s metafiction novel Pale Fire and with Joseph Campbell’s research in comparative mythology and religion in mind, I explore the act of mythmaking and the composition of metafictional text in this work of fiction. The myth aspect combines elements of Classical, biblical, medieval, Romantic, and original materials to form a product that should strike readers as both familiar and alien, demonstrating Campbell’s notion of the monomyth as well as the ongoing tradition of mythmaking that continues to captivate both readers and writers. The metafictional portion of the text emphasizes a reader’s relationship to a work of fiction, a scholar’s relationship to his or her scholarly work, and a subtext’s relationship to its primary text. Combining the texts encourages the reader to read critically and reevaluate his or her conceptions of genre in order to piece together the greater story of tyranny and rebellion.

Narrar é resistir: impasses e entremeios em João Guimarães Rosa / To narrate is to resist: impasses and entremeios in João Guimarães RosaVilhena, Guilherme Mazzafera e Silva 15 September 2017 (has links)
This work presents an approach to João Guimarães Rosas literary production published in periodicals between 1947 and 1954, a moment located between his first published book, Sagarana (1946), and the works of 1956, Corpo de baile and Grande sertão: veredas. Seeking to unveil the constitution of a first person narrative voice in its tense bond between impersonality and approximation, mediated by the consciousness of its impasses, the analytical focus is directed towards a letter in which the writer delineates a precise poetics in response to the historical present, and three narratives, O mau humor de Wotan (1948), Com o vaqueiro Mariano (1947-8) e Pé-duro, chapéu-de-couro (1952), perceived as texts of circumstance that share an ethical alignment in which the search for form implies a political act of resistance.
