The Tripartite Tributaries of Ush

Cognevich, Alicia 17 December 2011 (has links)
Inspired by Vladimir Nabokov’s metafiction novel Pale Fire and with Joseph Campbell’s research in comparative mythology and religion in mind, I explore the act of mythmaking and the composition of metafictional text in this work of fiction. The myth aspect combines elements of Classical, biblical, medieval, Romantic, and original materials to form a product that should strike readers as both familiar and alien, demonstrating Campbell’s notion of the monomyth as well as the ongoing tradition of mythmaking that continues to captivate both readers and writers. The metafictional portion of the text emphasizes a reader’s relationship to a work of fiction, a scholar’s relationship to his or her scholarly work, and a subtext’s relationship to its primary text. Combining the texts encourages the reader to read critically and reevaluate his or her conceptions of genre in order to piece together the greater story of tyranny and rebellion.

Sharing of Narratives : Analyzing how Tara Westover’s Educated Subverts the Genre Conventions and the Value of Autobiography in the EFL Classroom

Kooijman, Rebecca January 2021 (has links)
This essay presents a literary analysis of the autobiography Educated (2018) by Tara Westover. The analysis examines to what extent Westover’s story conforms and subverts the genre conventions of the Bildungsroman and the autobiography. An overview of the genre constitutions is therefore provided. In addition, the essay focuses on the use of the autobiography in the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classroom. Besides creating an arena for critical discussion and reflection in the Swedish upper secondary school, the autobiography may also encourage students to share their own stories. The findings show that Educated both conforms to and subverts the Bildungsroman genre. It is concluded that Westover’s autobiography challenges traditional genre conventions and may serve as a valuable tool in the EFL classroom.

Quiero Bailar : En fallstudie om hur Ivy Queen utmanar normativa könsroller i Latinamerika och genrekonventioner i reggaetón med låten ”Quiero Bailar”

Casal, Elizeth January 2024 (has links)
In the music genre reggaetón there has been an ideal premiering hypermasculine behaviour and narratives. The female reggaetón artist Ivy Queen has been active within the genre since the early beginnings. She has spoken about the impact it had on her, working against so many men i a masculine culture. Ivy Queen has expressed that her masculine energy has served her well in situations where people have tried to put her down for being a woman. Ivy Queen is known for challenging gender norms with different artistic expressions. She has without a doubt paved the way for today's female reggaetón artists who are using classic women's rights-messages in their songs and images.  This study starts of with the theories used which are queer- and intersectional feminist-theories. Then working its way in to giving context with an introduction to history of gender in Latin America in relation to colonialism and Catholicism. Here, marianismo and machismo are important themes to introduce when the study moves toward characteristics of reggaetón and giving background in Ivy Queen.  This study will use an audiovisual model to analyze Ivy Queens song and music video "Quiero Bailar" in relation to machismo and marianismo in Latin America, and genre conventions in reggaetón.  The result of this study shows us that not only does Ivy Queen choose some parts of what critics see as problematic in reggaetón and machismo and uses it to her advantage. She also breaks down hegemonic structures through usage of queer modes in voice, image, and lyrics - while keeping the music traditionally formed.

Ett skräckfyllt brobyggande från tv-spel till litteraturens domäner : En narratologisk och didaktisk läsning av transmediala genrekonventioner / A horror-tense overlap from videogame to the domains of literature : A narratological and didactical reading of transmedial genre conventions

Hollström, Hampus January 2021 (has links)
Denna studie utgör en didaktisk läsning av tre tv-spel inom skräckgenren, Among the Sleep (2016), Little Nightmares II (2021) samt Until Dawn (2015). / This study constitutes a didactical reading of three videogames within the horror genre, Among the Sleep (2016), Little Nightmares II (2021) and Until Dawn (2015). The aim is to investigate how these games potentially can be utilized to create a connection between videogames and literature within the context of education, more specific the Swedish subject in upper secondary school. The analyses are based upon a narratological reading of the videogames, through the lens of traits usually found within the horror genre, to be discussed in relation to didactical aspects. The analyses address that the videogames, within this study, occupy similarly traits as presented in other formats of media, including literature. A conclusion that can be drawn based upon the analyses is that there ought to be a potential in using the videogames as fiction to create a bridge over to the literature, more specific to use the similarities that exists between the two types of media, this within the Swedish subject at upper secondary school.

El Folleto de cursos de idiomas para extranjeros: análisis contrastivo (alemán-español) por tipos de emisor y subtextos

Fernández Sánchez, Francesc 14 January 2005 (has links)
The translationally relevant aim of this PhD is to account for the genre conventions of the LCLF mainly related to the persuasive and directive functions, by analyzing a bilingual corpus of parallel texts according to the method of contrastive textology. Genre conventions in this case are considered by sender types (public vs. private) and subtexts (text constituents functionally, semantically and formally defined) on the hypothesis that they will vary more depending on the sender type than on the language. The intralinguistic and interlinguistic analysis of the macrostructure and the recurrent textual segments, as well as of the functions (persuasive, referential and directive) characterizing both the LCLF as a persuasive leaflet and its three subtexts does not confirm the hypothesis. It does reflect, however, that the directive and persuasive functions prevail respectively in the public and private sender leaflets, as well as in those belonging to the Spanish and German subcorpora.
