Desfocando as linhas: ARG - a estrutura imperceptível do jogo / Bluring the lines: ARG the imperceptible structure of the game

Lopes, Lucas Garofalo 03 November 2009 (has links)
This project aims to examine the emerging genre of games known as ARG. Using the theory in the fields of videogames and games in general, is expected to set up specific features of ARGs, as well as its relations with the players, the business market, the press and the general public. Through this, its possible to see that the ARGs have unique characteristics, which are different from videogames and other games. These characteristics make them promising while controversial for mixing fiction and the game with reality. Therefore it is necessary more accuracy in the development of this genre of games to establish recognizable patterns and reach new markets.

Videogames and Friendships: Contextual Factors That Influence the Willingness to Aggress Following the Playing of a Violent Videogame

Rogers, Jonathan Charles Edwin 11 July 2011 (has links) (PDF)
Participants (N = 73) in the present research were assigned to play a violent videogame (Super Smash Brothers) with either a supportive or an ambivalent friend. Orthogonal to this manipulation, participants were assigned to play the game either competitively or cooperatively. Subsequent aggression toward their friend was assessed by measuring participants' competitive or cooperative behavior in a Prisoner's Dilemma game. Results revealed no differences in aggression as a function of friendship type or game strategy, although means were in predicted directions. The influence of context on exposure to violent media is discussed, as are issues of power and sample type as possible reasons for the nonsignificant findings.

First-person participation in Dante's 'Commedia'

Powlesland, Katherine Lucy January 2018 (has links)
This thesis sets out a case for a mode of reading I term first-person participation in relation to Dante’s 'Commedia', a narrative poem I propose to function as an exceptionally participatory text. That Dante’s poem invites active engagement on the part of its readers is widely accepted in scholarship. My objective is to extend this debate by identifying certain of Dante’s innovations in relation to the mechanisms of narrative transmission through which such active engagement is invited. In so doing, I seek to establish that these mechanisms together constitute a narratological strategy of invitations to the reader to engage with the poem, intermittently and electively, in a mode of first-person participation, mentally simulating on her own account the journey to the desire for the divine. My research transfers and adapts for textual literary theory new notions of embodied simulation from cognitive neuroscience and emerging ideas in videogame critical theory relating to the mechanics of player presence and the function of the avatar, suggesting and evidencing parallels with the deeply personal and embodied modes of interaction with devotional texts associated with medieval practices of affective piety. I identify in the 'Commedia' a comprehensive and systematic programme of invitations to participate facilitating three types of presence in the responsive reader, and underpinning the invitation to first-person participation. Spatial presence (the perceptual illusion of ‘being there’) is invited through a multi-layered strategy I describe as narration through situated body states. Social presence (the illusion of being physically in relation with others) is invited by narration through kinaesthetic empathy. Self-presence (the experience that ‘something is happening to me’) is constituted, I suggest, through a combination of five mechanisms: a model of narrating instances that identifies the existence of four “faces” of the Dantean ‘io’; a strategy I borrow from film theory of narration through mobile camera view; a new reading of the functioning of the direct addresses to the reader; a strategy of narrative training; and a comprehensive strategy of narration through the manifold gaps in the text.

The dissertation maps and evaluates representations of Brazil exposed in foreign digital games released between the years of 1985 and 2009, questioning characterizations and dynamics that shape identities and differences in videogame productions. From a perspective of understanding that considers the nature of dichotomies and antagonisms as the base for the construction of meaning in digital games, the work points to developments of the idea of opponents in representations of characters, setting, spatiality and territory, punctuating the references of Brazil given in that context. Written under a qualitative and multidisciplinary approach that prioritizes the analysis of its objects through strategies similar to the close reading, this dissertation adopts a theoretical and political stance oriented by the Cultural Studies perspective and by a critical position of post-colonial evaluation, perceiving digital games as contemporary stages where alterities are signified and represented as antagonists of conflict situations.

The video game industry has grown steadily since the 1970s to become one of today's top digital entertainment media. Although game design is now recognized as playing a relevant role in game development, the field of ludology has focused on the critical study of games (game studies), whose premises do not always converge with the practical needs of the game developers. In this sense, this thesis proposes a discussion about the emergence of a game design science, as well as a research method consistent with the game design process. Design Science, as proposed by Herbert Simon, aims to generate knowledge to help professionals to design better artifacts in order to solve problems in their respective fields. In this sense, this approach links the process of scientific research to that of design in order to feed designers back with information relevant to a class of problems. The Design Science Research (DSR) approach has not been formally proposed to the game design field, although several researchers adopt similar methods in their studies. In this work, the main concepts of the DSR method - classes of problems, artifacts, construction heuristics and contingency heuristics – are adapted to the field of game design. A DSR method is then adapted for the study of game design problems. The model is discussed in a case study, in which the heuristics involved in the synthesis and evaluation of the artifact are analyzed. The analysis of the prototype was based on the gameplay heuristic models found in the literature. The game development process was guided by an initial theme from which the four main game components (aesthetics, narrative, mechanics and technology) were designed. The suitability between the initial concept and the gameplay was assessed through playtest and intrinsic evaluation. This research succeeded to explore the possibility of systematic study on game design, however, the case study did not allow us to evaluate the usefulness of the information for the effective redesign of the game. Therefore, complementary studies are suggested in order to integrate the playtest into the game development process.

_______________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / In this thesis, we explore the psychological meaning that underlies the activity of playing video games among a group of teenagers aged 11 to 16. We understand that video games differ from other forms of games known, such as children´s make-believe games or rule-based games, because while in the former it is the imagination that is at the forefront of consciousness, the latter places the rules on first plane. In videogames, a new mode of relationship with the rules of the game is developed: a set of rules that can be and often are broken, if not by the players themselves, by the designers of games in favor of the imagination. To distinguish it from the earlier forms, we would rather classify this new form of activity as one of the make-believe games: a synthesis and an evolution of the game with rules, which mainly transforms the role of imagination in the determination of the will. This make-believe games replace imagination back on the first level of activity, and it redraws the mechanisms of will-formation and preparation for the future. Associated with the make-believe game, there are innovations in the mass communication field, production and reproduction of images techniques which point to a new way of knowing and approaching the world. The game of make-believe has an important role in education and social values formation of the will – some fundamentals of the activity in this direction were highlighted in the work. To develop this thesis, we considered the various approaches to the topic in order to show the social character of this activity. We turned to the Soviet Psychology for Vygotsky´s psychological meaning of the game, as well as the contributions of psychology activity to display the categories of action, imagination, motivation and will, in addition to the relationships they establish with each other. With the help of Eastern Europe psychology, we tried to show how, among the categories of will and imagination, it bears a relationship with dialectics. While the action of the imagination is unlimited, and through its action the person releases himself from the immediate conditions, the action of will is subject to the conditions given by the intellect, mainly through the acquisition of speech and the organic and environmental conditions. It is not possible to examine these two psychological functions – imagination and will – out of the concept of personality, since they carry out complementary roles in the person´s set of activities. Finally, through conversations with some adolescents and by comparison with other data collected by other authors, we conclude this thesis illuminating some issues that seemed important to understanding of the psychological principle that underlies this activity in relation to the development of will and imagination.

A importância das regras e do gameplay no envolvimento do jogador de videogame / The importance of rules and gameplay on the engagement of the videogame player

Santos, Hélia Vannucchi de Almeida 16 April 2010 (has links)
The work is concerned primarily to point out some elements that can clarify the understanding of the concepts responsible by the player engagement with the game; the rules and the gameplay are the elements, considered as principal, to construct the experience of playing. Comprehending the concept of the game, we tried to identify the elements responsible for that. The rules and the gameplay concepts, types and elements, and their interrelations have been discussed. The challenge proposed by the game can create an immersive condition to the player; the mechanics manipulation and the rules combination will evoke the emergence of new elements and turn this experimentation enjoyable and grateful.

Corrêa, Francisco Tupy Gomes 15 December 2017 (has links)
Eu jogo, tu jogas e nós? Nós jogamos ou somos jogados? Eu me comunico? / I play, you play, and what about us? Do we play or are we played? Do I communicate myself? Do you communicate with me? Do we communicate while we play? Perhaps the shallow answer we are led to think is, \"Yes! and how we communicate. \" More elaborately, the idea of the research in question is the synergy that occurs between playing and communicating, considering that communication is not something that emulates communication, which promotes a escape to the virtual, which places the player as an object like a pawn. Communicating is something that one feels, that flows naturally, that permeates our sensitivity and connects what we are with what we become. Therefore, this proposal involves studying the phenomenon that the game promotes, considering the New Theory of Communication, The Principle of Reason During, the metapore and other terminologies developed by Ciro Marcondes Filho and the FiloCom Group. The best approach to playing the game is through the support of the video game in order to seek the subtle, the point of balance of interactive playful communication, which somehow changes us when we finish playing. The game is proposed as an object of study. Minecraft, deals with a phenomenon, as it not only places the player as an audiovisual content producer but allows users to transform and translate reality into them. The question, however, is: do users translate the blocks they manipulate, which are informed and supposedly communicated in reality? The objective here is to understand the game through this lens, seeking the theoretical contributions from the point of view of the Principle of Reason During (Communication, Technological and Systemic bias) and practices (Reflection, Creation, Seizure and Popularization of knowledge).
