A Diversity Perspective on Knowledge Transfer at Nordic Trading Floors : Does wearing suits and playing golf help the employees to learn?

Levén, Pernilla, Mohn, Henrik January 2017 (has links)
Background: This thesis is about knowledge transfer and diversity at Nordic trading floors. The research is focusing on knowledge transfer and how it is influenced by diversity and the ties between homogenous people. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to understand how the knowledge transfer could be more efficient at Nordic trading floors and whether employees prefer to share knowledge with employees to whom they either have a weak or strong social tie to. We also want to see how homogenous people impact the flow of knowledge transfer. Methodology: This research is conducted through a case study of respondents working at trading floors at two different banks in the Nordic countries. The data is mainly collected through quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews. Conclusions: Knowledge transfer at Nordic trading floors is implemented through different types of training and mentoring and by keeping up with strong social ties which is feeding the sociocultural arena. Homogenous people are contributing to knowledge transfer by spreading tacit knowledge while networking and socializing with each other. Wearing suits and playing golf might therefore help employees at Nordic trading floors to learn more.

Nordgren, Johan January 2017 (has links)
Knowledge sharing has been gaining more interest over the past decades, and is being recognized as an opportunity to gain a competitive advantage for organisations. While knowledge sharing has been gaining more attention, knowledge itself has begun to be considered a valuable resource and some researchers even consider it to be a vital part of innovation, which is also suggested to be a sustainable source of competitive advantage for companies. One would think that this is enough incentive to drive any company executive to pursue effective knowledge sharing initiatives, but a pilot-study for this paper suggests that this is not necessarily the case. Some researchers suggest that there is a vagueness surrounding the field of knowledge management and knowledge sharing. They also suggest that this is the reason as to why so many companies struggle to have success with their knowledge sharing initiatives. The aim of this study is therefore to examine the vagueness and complexity surrounding knowledge sharing. The results of this study implies that this vagueness might be somewhat exaggerated, seeing that the company examined in this study seems to implement and execute some of the most cited theories in the field quite successfully.

Drivers of knowledge transfer between universities and industry R&D partners in South Africa

Van Zyl, Anthea 10 April 2008 (has links)
South Africa as a technology colony is challenged to attain industrial, technological and commercial sustainability whilst protecting its intellectual property. Universities and industry organizations are two main behavioral components of the South African National System of Innovation. The mechanisms of how knowledge flows between universities and industry organizations are complex and multifarious. Proper management of knowledge transfer between universities and industry is crucial to alleviate the technology colony dependency and to move toward a stable and reliable knowledge exchange system. This dissertation presents the findings of the RESEARCH MARKETING&TECHNOLOGY COMMERCIALIZATION SURVEY conducted in South Africa. Part IV of the survey has been designed to examine the mechanisms of knowledge transfer between industrial organizations and universities on research and development (R&D) collaborations. A study on the drivers of knowledge transfer in particular is presented in this dissertation. / Dissertation (MIS (Information Science))--University of Pretoria, 2008. / Information Science / MIS / unrestricted

Virtuell Kunskapsöverföring : En kvalitativ studie om hur intranätet möjliggör kunskapsöverföring / Virtual Knowledge Transfer : A qualitative study on how the intranet enables knowledge transfer

Andersson, Filip, Fred, Marcus January 2017 (has links)
Nyckelord: Kunskap, kunskapshantering, kunskapsöverföring, intranät / Title: Virtual Knowledge Transfer – A qualitative study on how the intranet enables knowledge transfer. Level: Final assignment for Bachelor Degree in Business Administration Author: Filip Andersson och Marcus Fred Supervisor: Daniella Fjellström och Signe Jernberg Date: 2017 - August Aim: The aim of this study is to create an understanding of how employees use the intranet to obtain explicit knowledge  Method: This study is based on a hermeneutic perspective. The gathering of empirical material is based on a qualitative research method in form of semi-structured interviews. The theoretical framework is based on prior research within the Knowledge Management field. An interview guide has been formed based on the theoretical framework, the empirical result is therefor based on the interview guide. A thematic analyze is used where themes have been created out of the empirical results. Result & Conclusions: The study shows that employees mostly are using the intranet to obtain explicit knowledge in connection to recurrent problems and questions related to work. Suggestions for future research: Limitations of the study are based on the problems with the generalizability connected to the semi-structured interviews that are done within one company. More research in a bigger context needs to be done. Contribution of the thesis: This study contributes with a more compelling theory when it comes to the usage of the intranet to obtain explicit knowledge. As well as a updated view on relevant models connected to the knowledge transfer research. Key words: Knowledge, knowledge management, knowledge transfer, intranet

Personality and Performance: Assessing the Mediating Role of Mental Model Formation in the Personality-Performance Relationship

Cartaya, Eric 09 November 2012 (has links)
Personality has long been linked to performance. Evolutions in this relationship have brought forward new questions regarding the true nature of how personality impacts performance. Both direct and indirect relationships have been proven significant. This study further investigated potential indirect relationships by including a mediating variable, mental model formation, in the personality-performance relationship. Undergraduate students were assessed in a 6-week period, Time 1 - Time 2 experiment. Conceptualizations of personality included measures of the Big 5 model and Self-efficacy, with performance measured by content quiz and overall course scores. Findings showed that the Big 5 personality traits, extraversion and agreeableness, positively and significantly impacted commonality with the instructor’s mental model. However, commonality with the instructor’s mental model did not impact performance. In comparison, commonality with an expert mental model positively and significantly impacted performance for both the content quiz and overall course score. Furthermore, similarity with an expert mental model positively and significantly impacted overall course performance. Hypothesized full mediation of mental model formation for the personality-performance relationship was not supported due to a lack of direct effect relationships required for mediation. However, a revised conceptualization of results emerged. Findings from the current study point to the novel and unique role mental models play in the personality-performance relationship. While personality traits do impact mental model formation, accuracy in the mental models formed is critical to performance.

The Governance of Canadian Domestic Multi-Sport Events: A Focus on Stakeholder Coordination and Knowledge Management

Schenk, Jessica Lin January 2015 (has links)
This dissertation’s purpose was to explore the governance of two domestic multi-sport events—2012 Ontario Summer Games and 2013 Canada Games—regarding how stakeholder coordination and knowledge management occurred. Case studies were built using content and social network analyses of 27 interviews and 476 document pages. In both events, the organizing committee staff and sport organizations were the most salient stakeholders, being therefore seen as the focal actors within the event network regarding coordination, initiating communication, building trust, and improving relationships. For the provincial event specifically, findings suggested the organizing committee should exist within an enduring organization in order to maximize resources (e.g., financial, human, etc.), build long-term coordination mechanisms, and enhance knowledge management capacities. Knowledge transfer appeared to occur at both levels, to varying degrees of sophistication. The knowledge management processes at each event stressed the importance of people and of tacit knowledge. Implications for researchers and managers provided.

Know-how signalling and transfer systems to support integrated supply chains

Liu, Zhitao January 2012 (has links)
The construction industry is the largest industry in the world and operates in knowledge-based project organisations. The success of projects relies on the management of both tacit and explicit knowledge. This situation calls for a method for disseminating tacit knowledge from individuals to achieve higher performance and success value in construction projects. For the purpose, this study first articulates the problems of knowledge management in the construction industry. Then, by reviewing some knowledge engineering and management literatures, this research sets a theoretical foundation of knowledge management in the construction industry. A questionnaire survey was used to investigate and examine the current situation of knowledge management in UK and China construction industry. The result of frequency analysis and nonparametric test analysis provides the perceptions on the importance of knowledge transfer, the implementation of knowledge transfer, the resources of knowledge, and barriers for tacit knowledge transfer. From the literature review, this study proposes a tacit knowledge transfer process framework (3I) and identifies a series of factors correlated with effectiveness of knowledge transfer. This thesis also identifies four main independent variables - organsiational culture, organizational structure, IT technology and No-IT technology, and investigates the relationship between organisational elements with these factors and the performance of knowledge transfer. The findings are based on three case studies and responses of questionnaire survey and interviews. The results reveal that there are significant relationships between some of the variables and either the creation of knowledge assets or performance of knowledge transfer. Therefore, it is necessary for construction organsiations to consider these elements in developing and implementing a knowledge management strategy/system in a construction organisation. This study proposes a practical methodology to transfer knowledge by using an integrated system (TKTMS). The TKTMS can be an effective tool for all project members to transfer tacit knowledge across firms' boundaries and accelerate the speed of knowledge creation, share and transfer in the construction industry. The integration of the function model (IDEF0) with the information model (IDEF1) is applied to understand the necessary function/information for consideration in the 3I model and implement TKTMS.

Critical success factors required by virtual teams members in engineering projects

Matlala, M.E. (Makwena Emmanuel) 21 July 2012 (has links)
Virtual teams have emerged as a result of development in communication technologies and the inevitability for companies to compete in the global market. Differentiating features between traditional and virtual teams are minimal face-to-face interaction and a predominant use of technology-enabled communication. The objectives of this research were to investigate critical factors that contribute towards virtual team success and to further assess the role played by trust, communication, conflict and knowledge. Quantitative data collection methodology was employed for this research, using self-administered questionnaires. A total of 64 responses were received from a sample of 75. Most respondents were from South Africa (47%), while the remaining 53% were from India, United Kingdom and China. Four research questions were formulated based on gaps identified during the literature review. Factor analysis was performed by adding the outcomes of each factor and ranking them in descending order to determine the factor that was highly ranked. Based on this analysis, the study concluded that feedback about how well each team member was doing should be viewed as how well the entire team is doing. Moreover, the ability of team members to make good decisions and establishment of interim deadlines linked with celebration of the milestones, were also ranked as critical factors towards virtual teams success. / Dissertation (MBA)--University of Pretoria, 2012. / Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) / unrestricted

Nirlene Aparecida Arruda 20 December 2012 (has links)
A good product always been associated with the peculiar way people do things. If before which generated wealth were the traditional means of production, todays wealth comes from knowledge. This change caused a profound impact on the economy. Considering this context, this work proposes to investigate, through case study, knowledge management as a tool able to develop and create the `organizational intelligence, which is now a strategic competitive value for organizations. We used a descriptive research with qualitative and quantitative approach. The data collection instruments were questionnaire and documents and evaluated by statistical and content. The analyzes revealed large amount devoted to infrastructure aspect, which contributes to the formalization of knowledge, but a lack of a systemic view in creative processes, and the need to maintain and share the knowledge becomes predominant in the informal knowledge company and thus the Knowledge Management needs to implement essential steps for their effectiveness.
