Universalism and Its Discontents:  Konrad Wachsmann's 20th Century Architecture

Isbilen, Ezgi 28 June 2023 (has links)
In 1941, German architect Konrad Wachsmann (1901–1980) emigrated to the U.S. to escape the Second World War. Erstwhile a trained cabinetmaker, the chief architect of one of the largest prefabricated construction companies in Europe, and a private practitioner, Wachsmann brought a particular line of prefabricated timber construction knowledge to the U.S., which he utilized in the development of military technologies as well as for the development of an ambitious prefabricated kit-of-parts house known as the Packaged House (1941-47), developed in collaboration with Walter Gropius (1883–1969). Later, he transferred to academia and developed an algorithmic teaching system, which he employed in his teaching posts in the U.S. and his state-sponsored workshops around the world. With two novel architectural research institutes, which he supported with military and government commissions that became the subject of design inquiry at these programs, Wachsmann envisioned a transformation of architectural education within the university system and the larger order of society. Through Wachsmann's post-emigration oeuvre, covering his projects, collaborations, and pedagogy, this dissertation delves into the post-war transatlantic exchange of architectural and intellectual capital and the influence of production technologies and cybernetics on architectural imagination and theory. / Doctor of Philosophy / In 1941, German architect Konrad Wachsmann emigrated to the United States, seeking refuge from the turmoil of the Second World War. With a background as a trained cabinetmaker, the chief architect for a major European prefabricated timber construction company and an architect who practiced on his own, Wachsmann brought with him a wealth of knowledge in prefabricated timber construction. His expertise found diverse applications in the U.S., ranging from military technologies to the development of an ambitious prefabricated housing system called the Packaged House (1941-47), created in collaboration with renowned architect Walter Gropius. Transitioning to academia, Wachsmann pioneered an algorithmic teaching system that choreographed the movement of students, information, and tasks within the studio. He employed this system in in his teaching posts in the U.S. and his state-sponsored workshops around the world. He envisioned a transformation of architectural education within universities and society at large, exemplified by two innovative architectural research institutes he founded. These institutions were financially supported by military and government commissions, which became the subject of design exploration. This dissertation examines Wachsmann's post-emigration body of work, encompassing his projects, collaborations, and pedagogical approach. It delves into the profound influence of production technologies and cybernetics on architectural imagination and theory, shedding light on the dynamic transatlantic exchange that shaped the architectural landscape in the post-war era.

„Lanfranks ‚Chirurgia parva‘ in der Abschrift Konrad Schrecks von Aschaffenburg“ als Quelle zur spätmittelalterlich-frühneuzeitlichen Traumatologie / "Lanfrank's 'Chirurgia parva' in the transcript by Konrad Schreck of Aschaffenburg" as a source on late medieval-early modern traumatology

Bröhl, Kathleen January 2024 (has links) (PDF)
The aim of this dissertation is to analyse the content of "Lanfrank's 'Chirurgia parva' in the transcript by Konrad Schreck of Aschaffenburg " using the structural template developed by Ralf Vollmuth in his habilitation thesis "Traumatologie und Feldchirurgie an der Wende vom Mittelalter zur Neuzeit". By analysing various surgical textbooks and manuals using a common structural template, it should be possible to compare medical-historical sources critically and contrastively. This means that the sources must first be edited and then, if necessary, translated. In the next step, the medicines used - of plant, animal and mineral origin - are identified and determined. Monographs with the determining ingredients and properties are then compiled. On the basis of these plant and drug monographs, which build on each other in the sense of a database, it should then be possible to determine the efficacy of the drugs used from a modern pharmacological point of view. A sufficient number of sources, which have been processed according to a common structural template, can ultimately make it possible to assess which of the applications described were representative, which were outsiders or which were only theoretical approaches that were not used in practice.

Universitäre Psychiatrie um 1900 : Die Anfangsjahre der psychiatrischen Klinik in Würzburg / University psychiatry around 1900 : The early years of the psychiatric clinic in Würzburg

Krings, Moritz January 2024 (has links) (PDF)
At the end of the 19th century, there were two different types of psychiatric institutions in Germany: asylums on the one hand and university psychiatric clinics on the other. Research into the history of psychiatry has mainly focused on asylums, while clinics are underrepresented. This study aims to contribute to the historical knowledge of university psychiatric institutions. To this end, the characteristics of a psychiatric clinic around 1900 are examined using the example of the psychiatric clinic at the University of Würzburg. In addition to the location and structure of the clinic and its staff, the focus is on the three main topics of patients, research and teaching.

Im Geist der Gegenwart : the speculative method of the art historian Fritz Burger

Hamer, Lauren Grace 2009 August 1900 (has links)
Between the outbreak of World War I and the mid-1930s, the best-selling and most widely read book on the topic of modern art in Germany was written by the art historian Fritz Burger (1877–1916). Burger is now all but forgotten in the art historiography of the period and absent in the English literature. This thesis provides the first English interpretation of Burger's major works and seeks to locate his art historical method in relation to then-contemporary intellectual streams. Trained in the late 19th century, Burger largely rejected the cultural-historical studies and theories of stylistic development and embraced an artistic-critical model forwarded by neo-Kantians like Adolf Hildebrand and Konrad Fiedler. Beginning with Burger's texts Cézanne und Hodler (1913) and Einführung in die Moderne Kunst (1917), I examine the conceptual underpinnings of these works with particular attention to Burger's notions of color, artistic cognition and philosophical speculation. I consider Burger's written output as the compliment to his hands-on pedagogical technique at the University of Munich, his involvement with the Munich avant-garde and friendship with the artist Wassily Kandinsky. Burger's work is a rare and early attempt to write about contemporary art as an historical document but without recourse to artistic biography or cultural milieu as interpretive tools. / text

Chirurgischer Unterricht in Padua im 16. Jahrhundert. Annotated edition and translation of student handwritten records by Konrad Zinn

Sambale, Janine January 2019 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis offers for the first time an edition and translation of handwritten notes from the surgical lessons in Padua for prospective academically educated doctors in the 16th century. It thus provides detailed insights into surgical teaching in Padua, the leading medical faculty in Europe at the time. Johann Konrad Zinn, a German medical student, wrote these transcripts in the surgery lecture that Hieronymus Fabricius ab Aquapendente held, one of the most famous anatomists of that time.
