Earlier studies of culmination tend to put operations first and logistics second, as an underlying factor to the culminating point. This case study aims to revert this relationship and focuses solely on the causes for logistical culmination. Utilizing Kress theory of responsiveness, factors directly linked to a culmination within thelogistical organisation are studied to improve the understanding of logistical culmination. The cases studied are operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm and operation Iraqi Freedom. These cases are interesting due to the fact that one case closes the logistical gap and manages to provide a responsive logistical chain, while the other in spite of completed preparations, reaches logistical culmination. The study finds that an under-responsive chain can more strongly be linked to logistical culmination. Factors such as insufficient resources, miscommunication, decision-making and infrastructure play a vital role in forming as well as avoiding a logistical culmination.

Försvarsmaktens sjukvårdsorganisation var under det kalla kriget och invasionsförsvarets dagar anpassad och dimensionerad för att kunna omhänderta tusentals skadade per dygn. Sedan 1990-talet har Försvarsmaktens inriktning fokuserat på internationella insatser. I kombination med förändringar inom det medicinska området, hotbilder, skadepanorama och folkopinionen har detta lett till nya förmågor inom den militära sjukvården. Sedan en tid har Försvarsmaktens inriktning ändrats till ett mer nationellt fokus. Vad har då hänt med sjukvårdsförmågorna? Denna uppsats använder sig av Moshe Kress teorier presenterade i boken ”Operational Logistics - The Art and Science of Sustaining Military Operations” för att göra en analys av de förmågor Försvarsmaktens insatsorganisation har idag. Kress teorier används även för att analysera vilka förmågor som krävs för att uppnå en lägsta acceptabel sjukvårdsnivå på Medical Treatment and Evacuation och vilka förmågor som bör ingå i Försvarsmaktens framtida insatsorganisation. I uppsatsen konstateras att den framtida insatsorganisationen bör innehålla förmågor för Damage Control, både sett ur ett operationellt perspektiv och ur ett medicinskt perspektiv.

Denna uppsats undersöker hur grafisk formgivning påverkar image. Detta görs genom att se på Dagens Nyheter som exemplum på hur man kan jobba under formgivningsprocessen för att bygga image. Kopplingen mellan begreppet image och det retoriska begreppet ethos diskuteras och kopplas till det retoriska begreppet doxa. En fokusgruppsundersökning har använts som metod för att hämta inspiration till analysen. De teoretiska utgångspunkter på vilken uppsatsen primärt vilar är Daniel Chandlers sammanfattning av semiotikläran, Theo van Leeuwen och Gunther Kress tankar om sociosemiotik, Mats Rosengrens beskrivning av doxa, Jens Kjeldsens redogörelse för ethos, Peggy Brønn Simcic och Øyvind Ihlens förklaringar av image samt tankar om grafisk formgivning presenterade i boken Bild och form för informationsdesign med Rune Pettersson som redaktör. Resultatet av undersökningen visar att formgivningen av en tidning påverkar tidningens image men även dess ethos. Men formgivningen är endast en del i den kommunikationen som påverkar mottagaren. Undersökningen visar även att ethos upplevs olika beroende på doxa och därmed kan den inte med säkerhet fastslå hur tidningens ethos och image påverkas, endast att de gör det.

Military campaigns has throughout time been analysed through the eyes of the commanding officers and their tactical knowledge. Is this the only way to analyse military campaigns or can victory be explained through other actions then tactical decisions? Can the importance of logistics explain outcomes in different military campaigns? This study strives to explain how logistic measures can explain different outcomes in military campaigns. The concept which is used in this study is Moshe Kress theory on operational logistics, and through this I will try to explain the importance of logistics as a factor for outcomes in military campaigns. This study has shown that pre-emptive measures in the operational logistics level can change the outcome of military campaigns. Although logistics isn´t the only reason for victory or defeat in military campaigns this study shows the importance in understanding and making sure your logistic planning is as well planned as your tactical planning.

The usage of railways in war played a great part in Europe during the late nineteenth century. The railways made it possible to effectively transport personnel and resources from the coast to the hinterland. The neglection of the Swedish railway system in recent military regulations tells us that this means of transportation might not be as relevant as it was during the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. The purpose of this study is to examine what the logistical success factors will be for the utilization of the Swedish railway system in a national war. This study will also attempt to present the possibilities and limitations of the Swedish railway system in a national war. Moshe Kress theory about seven structural and operational properties that an operational logistic system must fulfill, will be used in this study to examine how well the Swedish railways system can fulfill Kress properties. The results show that the Swedish railway system fulfilled four out of the seven properties. The main conclusion is that the system partly has the ability, as a logistical resource, to provide Swedish military personnel and units in the event of a national war.

Despite Operation Iraqi Freedoms operational success, many reports revealed that the operational  logistics were under considerable pressure. Nonetheless, it did not fail completely, however the operational logistics from OIF had a lot of lessons to learn. This is evident in a number of articles, which have a practical way of viewing the issues at hand. This paper analyses the operational logistics with a more theoretical approach, and incorporates Moshe Kress seven properties for operational logistics. The result shows that the operational logistics was good enough, even though it lacked a few of the operational properties. This is thought to be because of an inbalance between the properties, which can further explain why the operation was a success whilst the operational logistics was just adequate.

Den viktigaste målsättningen för Försvarsmakten under försvarsinriktningsperioden 2016-2020 var en ökad operativ förmåga. Som en del i detta genomfördes utredningarna Logistik för högre försvarsberedskap och Ledning för ett starkare försvar vilket renderade i en tyngdpunktsförskjutning av logistiken från den operativa (baktung) till den taktiska (framtung) nivån. Forskaren Moshe Kress menar att framtung logistik byter operativ flexibilitet mot taktisk tillgänglighet och ger försämrad operativ förmåga eftersom möjligheterna att möta olika militärstrategiska utfall minskar. Försvarsmaktens ambition att öka den operativa förmågan genom att en framtung logistik går således tvärtemot Kress teorier. För att svara på hur tyngdpunktsförskjutningen av logistiken påverkar Försvarsmaktens operativa förmåga prövas Kress teorier mot två av Försvarsmaktens logistikkoncept (2016 och 2020). Kunskapen som erhålls från uppsatsen förväntas ge viktiga intressenter en ökad förståelse för hur militär logistik mest effektivt kan organiseras framöver. Uppsatsens resultat påvisar att Kress teorier har begränsad giltighet förutom på den operativa nivån. Resultaten visar även att Försvarsmakten har nått en ökad operativ förmåga trots att det går emot ledande logistikteoriers slutsatser. Dagens logistikkoncept speglar tydligt de militärstrategiska målsättningarna – vilket är en förutsättning för ökad operativ förmåga.

Under perioden 2011-2013 opererade det svenska helikopterförbandet Swedish Air Element Helikopter 10B på Camp Marmal i Afghanistan i syfte att utgöra sjuktransportresurs för Regional Command North inom ramen för ISAF (International Security Assistance Force). Förbandet bidrog till sjuktransportförmåga med helikopter i norra Afghanistan tillsammans med amerikanska, tyska och norska helikopterförband. De taktiska kraven på förbandet innebar att kunna hålla en hög beredskap med hög tillgänglighet i en konfliktfylld miljö i syfte att rädda liv. Den här studien syftar till att undersöka förbandets logistik och hur den påverkade förbandets operationer och verksamhet men även att undersöka i vilken utsträckning Moshe Kress teoribildning kan förklara logistiken i det valda fallet. Undersökningen visar på ett minimalistiskt logistiksystem som också bidrog positivt till förbandets operationer och verksamhet. Vidare var förbandet i hög grad beroende av extern försörjning där baseringen spelade en avgörande roll. Insatsen föregicks av en omfattande planering för att säkerställa tillgänglighet, både i insatsområdet och på hemmaförband. Undersökningen visar på att de största framgångsfaktorerna för logistiksystemet var framsynthet, tillgänglighet, överlevnadsförmåga och enkelhet.

Studies about logistics operations are rare to find and those that exist lack theoretical depth. The literature does not agree whether planning for a logistics operation or the actual implementation of it is more important, why this study addresses this matter. The aim of this study is to contribute with an explanation of how logistics affected the outcome in Operation Barbarossa and to verify Kress’ theory about Operational logistics. This is done by a case study comparing the Soviet and the German supply and support system during Operation Barbarossa based on principles of logistics that need to be present for the logistic operation to be planned and implemented with success. Even though both nations had a poor supply and support system, the system of the Red army was more applicable to the principles of the theory and the operation ended up being a Soviet victory. This meets the aim of the study to verify the theory. The results indicate that planning and preparing a logistics operation is a prerequisite for a successful implementation that is a prerequisite for success in a military operation. In addition to the existing theory, it is also dependent on the capabilities of the enemy, hence it’s enough to have a logistics system superior to that of the enemy.
