Although every organisation disposes of a corporate identity, it is not a given that the organisation will also have a corporate brand. Corporate brands refer not only to the visual corporate identity elements such as the name, the logo and the corporate colours but also reflect the associations that the internal and external interest groups attach to the organisation.
The staff members of the organisation are regarded as the ambassadors of an organisation’s corporate brand which they should live and express in their work and actions. For that reason it is important that the corporate brand should be well established within the organisation itself.
The North-West University (NWU) was established in 2004 as the result of a merger between the former Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education and the University of the North-West. The North-West University consists of four business units, viz. the Institutional Office, the Mafikeng Campus, the Potchefstroom Campus and the Vaal Triangle Campus. Because of the diversity of the erstwhile institutions, there were several serious implications for the North-West University. One of these was the development and the subsequent suitable management model, given the distance between campuses, and the other would the design and establishment of a corporate brand for the institution, given the culture and background of the former institutions. The result has been the use of a hybrid model with regard to the over-arching corporate brand of the North-West University to the extent that each campus has developed its own separate corporate brand.
Although various studies have been done in the field about corporate brands, to date no study has been undertaken about the situation at the North-West University. Against this background it was possible to formulate the following general research question.
What are staff members’ perceptions of, respectively, the corporate brand and corporate brand management of the North-West University and the Potchefstroom Campus? For the purposes of this study semi-structured interviews were conducted with management of the Institutional Office and the Potchefstroom Campus directly involved in the application of the corporate brand. A quantitative electronic questionnaire was also sent to all academic, administrative and support staff members of the Potchefstroom Campus.
The study indicates that the management of the Institutional Office and of the Potchefstroom Campus in some instances hold differing views about the corporate brand of the North-West University and the Potchefstroom Campus. In contrast to this the study indicated that the staff members of the Potchefstroom Campus gave recognition to the fact that the Potchefstroom Campus had their own corporate brand, but that it is regarded as part of the over-arching corporate brand of the North-West University. Recreation provision in lower socio-economic communities in South AfricaVan der Klashorst, Engela 21 September 2010 (has links)
The provision of leisure and recreation has the potential to vitalise and change lower socio-economic communities. The benefits of leisure and recreation participation are, however, absent in the lower socio-economic communities of Danville and Elandspoort, as recreation and leisure activities are not seen as necessary needs that should be provided for the residents. Lower socio-economic status communities tend to suffer as a consequence of the often subliminal assumptions and reactions of well-meaning people. A major barrier to the implementation of recreation programmes in lower socio-economic communities remains the fact that these programmes often fall into the ambit of non-profit organisations, whose first priority does not usually include recreation provision. Second-order cybernetics theory is introduced in this study as a possible alternative approach to recreation provision in lower socio-economic communities. Engaging in a second-order cybernetics approach, the recreation provider can look beyond the feedback patterns utilised by a community to maintain its status quo, and work with and within a community to establish a sustainable recreation programme. Through the use of a second-order cybernetics approach, the residents of a lower socio-economic status community will no longer be regarded as the ‘observed’ participants of a programme that has been designed by an ‘observer’ and ‘expert’ recreation provider, but will, rather, participate in and share the responsibility of designing their own recreation programme for the community. The following three hypotheses were formulated:<ul> <li>Recreation provision in lower socio-economic communities will benefit from a second-order cybernetics approach.</li> <li>Sustainable recreation provision in a lower socio-economic status community will enhance the quality of life of the residents engaging in the activities available within the community.</li> <li>Second-order recreation provision in a lower socio-economic community will create an environment that is likely to be beneficial for social change</li></ul> In order for the hypotheses to be tested, the aims of the study were:<ul> <li>To examine the influence of recreation and leisure opportunities as a means of improving and maintaining social cohesion and quality of life in lower socio-economic status communities.</li> <li>To identify the barriers to providing and maintaining a comprehensive, sustainable recreation programme in a lower socio-economic community.</li> <li>To understand the way in which the residents of Danville and Elandspoort view recreation and recreation provision within the communities.</li> <li>To identify the similarities and differences between the current approach to recreational provision in the lower socio-economic communities of Danville and Elandspoort and a second-order cybernetics approach.</li></ul> Grounded in a qualitative framework, the research methods for the study included a literature review, the use of focus groups and vignette techniques, and observation. The sampling for the focus groups was done by means of convenience sampling. In total, six focus groups, which were segmented by place of attendance, participated. A total of 60 participants were used in the study, excluding the residents to whom the researcher spoke throughout the course of the study, and as part of the observation. It was found that a positive relationship exists between lower socio-economic status and inappropriate recreation programming. Lower socio-economic status communities are excluded from participation by means of several barriers, including factors such as cost of participation, registration fees and transport. An important barrier to recreation participation in the lower socio-economic status communities of Danville and Elandspoort that was identified in the study was the absence of recreation facilities in the communities. Residents confirmed that television and the consumption of alcohol were the main recreation activities in the communities. The responses provided in focus group discussions confirmed the fact that residents felt excluded from society, and that they also assumed that leisure and recreation activities were privileges that were reserved only for the middle and higher socio-economic status communities. Residents within the communities did not only feel excluded from society, but also felt powerless to do something about the situation. In response to the question concerning their perception of quality of life within the communities, participants demonstrated that they felt that recreation programming would be a positive contribution to the communities’ perception of a better quality of life. A second-order approach to recreation provision in the communities of Danville and Elandspoort will assist in facilitating a process of social change within the communities by including residents in the planning and provision of a community recreation programme. In order to utilize the full potential of leisure and recreation provision in the lower socio-economic communities of Danville and Elandspoort, the following aspects are suggested for the undertaking of any further research: <ul> <li>The potential of leisure and recreation provision to facilitate social change in a lower socio-economic community.</li> <li>Real barriers versus perceived barriers to recreation provision and recreation participation in a lower socio-economic community.</li> <li>Second-order cybernetics recreation provision as a community development approach: implementation and evaluation of change and sustainability within the community.</li></ul> AFRIKAANS : Die voorsiening van rekreasie in ‘n lae sosio-ekonomiese status gemeenskap het die inherente vermoë om ‘n positiewe verandering in die gemeenskap te bring. Die voordeel van rekreasie kan egter nie in die lae sosio-ekonomiese status gemeenskappe van Danville en Elandspoort verwesenlik en bydrae tot ‘n hoër persepsie van lewenskwaliteit nie, aangesien rekreasievoorsiening dikwels nie gesien word as ‘n nodige behoefte in die versorging van lae sosio-ekonomiese gemeenskappe nie. Selektering vir die fokus groepe is gedoen deur gerieflikheids-selektering, met indeling volgens die plek van bywoning: twee sopkombuise in Elandspoort, ‘n sopkombuis in Danville en ‘n ma-en-baba sentrum in Danville. ‘n Totaal van sestig deelnemers is gebruik in die studie, uitgesluit die gemeenskapslede met wie die navorser gepraat het deur die verloop van die studie. ‘n Positiewe verhouding is gevind tussen lae sosio-ekonomies status en swak rekreasie voorsiening. Lae sosio-ekonomiese gemeenskappe word uitgesluit deur die bestaan van verskeie struikelblokke tot deelname aan rekreasie, insluitend koste van deelname, registrasiefooie en vervoerprobleme. ‘n Belangrike struikelblok tot deelname aan rekreasie geidentifiseer in die studie is die afwesigheid van rekreasie fasiliteite in die gemeenskap. Inwoners het bevestig dat televisie en verbruik van alkohol die belangrikste vorm van rekreasie in die gemeenskap is. Reaksies van deelnemers aan die fokusgroepe het bevestig dat inwoners uitgesluit voel van die samelewing, en dat die aanname binne die gemeenskap bestaan dat rekreasie en vryetyd-aktiwiteite die voorreg van middel en hoër sosio-ekonomiese status gemeenskappe is. In reaksie op inwoners se lewenskwaliteit is daar deur die deelnemers aangedui dat rekreasie aktiwiteite in die gemeenskap sal bydrae tot ‘n positiewe persepsie van lewenskwaliteit. ongewoon. Die studie is outobiografies en is gegrond op die
aanname dat daar tussen die psigoterapeut, sy geskiedenis, die
wetenskap (etnografie en tweede-orde kubernetika) en die
klient(e) 'n unieke patroonverband bestaan.
Die psigoterapeut in die platteland het weens afstand of
finansies nie altyd die voorreg om supervisie van 'n eksterne
supervisor te ontvang nie. In so 'n situasie kan selfsupervisie,
deurdat dit 'n proses van selfontdekking is, 'n belangrike rol in
die psigoterapeut se selfontwikkeling speel. Selfsupervisie
plaas die klem op die psigoterapeut as persoon en as terapeut;
oor wie hy is, waar hy vandaan kom en waarheen hy binne die
psigoterapeutiese proses op pad is.
Vir enige psigoterapeut is dit belangrik om na 'n hoer vlak
van psigoterapie te streef. Hierdie strewe impliseer 'n proses
van selfondersoek, delwing, selfevaluasie en disseksie. Hierdie
proses is aan die hand van dagboekinskrywings gedoen, waar die
psigoterapeut sy daaglikse ervarings en gebeurtenisse vanuit die
verlede interpreteer het. Dit plaas die psigoterapeut as
hoofspeler, met sy familiegeskiedenis en huidige interpersoonlike
opset as inherente deel van sy mondering, op die voorgrond. In
hierdie proses word die psigoterapeut sentraal geplaas met die

an autobiography based on the assumption that there exists an
unique patterned connection between the psychotherapist, his
history, science (ethnography and second-order cybernetics), and
his clients.
Due to distance or financial problems, a rural
psychotherapist cannot experience the privilege of supervision
with an external supervisor. In such a situation selfsupervision
could play an important role in the self-development,
because it includes a search of self that will lead to more
effectiveness in psychotherapy. Self-supervision focuses on the
psychotherapist as a person and therapist, who he is, where he
comes from, and in what direction he, as a psychotherapist, is
developing within the psychotherapeutic process.
It is important to any psychotherapist to strive towards a
higher level of psychotherapy. This implies a process of selfinvestigation,
dissection and self-evaluation. This process was
conducted by means of diary entries in which the psychotherapist
interpreted his daily experiences and events in terms of his
past. This places the psychotherapist, with his family history
and current interpersonal situation, as intrinsic parts of
himself, in the foreground. In this process the psychotherapist
takes centre stage with emphasis on his responsibility concerning
the process of self-supervision.
The problems addressed by this personally coloured,
scientific study, are problems that the psychotherapist
identified through the process of self-supervision and
introspection. Such introspection leads to a deeper personal
knowledge which the psychotherapist can use to his own benefit
but also to the benefit of his family and client system.
This study is an attempt to identify a new way of research.
It is comprehensive and leads to personal fulfilment and deeper
self-knowledge and is also a method by which other
psychotherapists could discover themselves and their worlds. It
is a slow and painful process.
Chapters 1 to 4 comprise of the theoretical rationale of the
study and chapters 5 to 12 depict the history of the
psychotherapist. Chapter 13 situates self-supervision as a

It is important to any psychotherapist to strive towards a
higher level of psychotherapy. This implies a process of selfinvestigation,
dissection and self-evaluation. This process was
conducted by means of diary entries in which the psychotherapist
interpreted his daily experiences and events in terms of his
past. This places the psychotherapist, with his family history
and current interpersonal situation, as intrinsic parts of
himself, in the foreground. In this process the psychotherapist
takes centre stage with emphasis on his responsibility concerning
the process of self-supervision.
The problems addressed by this personally coloured,
scientific study, are problems that the psychotherapist
identified through the process of self-supervision and
introspection. Such introspection leads to a deeper personal
knowledge which the psychotherapist can use to his own benefit
but also to the benefit of his family and client system.
This study is an attempt to identify a new way of research.
It is comprehensive and leads to personal fulfilment and deeper
self-knowledge and is also a method by which other
psychotherapists could discover themselves and their worlds. It
is a slow and painful process.
Chapters 1 to 4 comprise of the theoretical rationale of the
study and chapters 5 to 12 depict the history of the
psychotherapist. Chapter 13 situates self-supervision as a

vertrekpunt. Die beginsels van reduksionisme, neutraliteit en liniere oorsaaklikheid

en non-objektiwiteit van interveiwante elemente binne die lewende sisteem.
Die verskille in aannames van personeel van 'n welsynsvereniging word ondersoek aan
die hand van observasie van prosesse van veranderende denke wat oor 'n periode
ontwikkel het. Die proses van verandering word aan die hand van 'n gevallestudie
bespreek.
Binne die veranderende denke, is erkenning verleen aan die sistemiese orientasie
waar die interaktiewe intervetwantskap van die elemente binne die sisteem ter sprake
raak. Die lewende sisteem en die kenmerke van outonomie, outopo"ise, organisasie en
struktuur word binne die filosofie van konstruktivisme bespreek. Uit hierdie filosofie
evolueer 'n proses waar binne realiteite geskep word, konsensus binne die sisteem
verkry word, en die organisasie van die lewende sisteem reflekteer word / This study focusses on the contrasting thinking patterns of Newtonian thinking and
constructivism. The principles of reductionism, neutrality and linear causality on which
Newtonian thinking is grounded are compared with circular processes and non
objectivity of interrelated elements that are to be found in living systems.
The differences in assumptions of personnel in a welfare organisation are investigated
through observation of changing processes of thinking that evolved over a period of
time. The process of change is discussed by way of a case study.
Recognition is given to the systemic orientation where the interactive interrelatedness
of elements within the system evolved within changing patterns of thinking. The living
system and characteristics of autonomy, autopoiesis, organisation and structure are
discussed from a philosophy of constructivism. From this philosophy evolved a process
in which realities were created, consensus was reached within the system, and the
