An application of theory to various reality television shows in order to discuss the emergence and encouragement of the false self in our society is the focus of this work. Toddlers and Tiaras, Hoarders and Sister Wives are the three television shows that will be analyzed by using content analysis in order to examine the effects of consumerism, narcissism and the emergence of the false self.
The limitless character of the economy coupled with narcissism and an increased focus on the self contributes to the development of the false self within the individual. People may not even be aware of the push to be narcissistic, focused on our own biographies and self-promotion, yet people are aware of their suffering and unhappiness. Many individuals are left questioning why it is that they are never completely satisfied even as they accumulate notoriety, success, material wealth and possessions. An ideology of greatness and being the best is found in so many avenues of our daily lives, and at times it can be overwhelming, and if we do not possess these skills and qualities we are encouraged to just fake it.

Employing Multiple Kernel Support Vector Machines for Counterfeit Banknote RecognitionSu, Wen-pin 29 July 2008 (has links)
Finding an efficient method to detect counterfeit banknotes is imperative. In this study, we propose multiple kernel weighted support vector machine for counterfeit banknote recognition. A variation of SVM in optimizing false alarm rate, called FARSVM, is proposed which provide minimized false negative rate and false positive rate. Each banknote is divided into m ¡Ñ n partitions, and each partition comes with its own kernels. The optimal weight with each kernel matrix in the combination is obtained through the semidefinite programming (SDP) learning method. The amount of time and space required by the original SDP is very demanding. We focus on this framework and adopt two strategies to reduce the time and space requirements. The first strategy is to assume the non-negativity of kernel weights, and the second strategy is to set the sum of weights equal to 1. Experimental results show that regions with zero kernel weights are easy to imitate with today¡¦s digital imaging technology, and regions with nonzero kernel weights are difficult to imitate. In addition, these results show that the proposed approach outperforms single kernel SVM and standard SVM with SDP on Taiwanese banknotes.

High performance, low-power and robust multi-gigabit wire-line designMukherjee, Tonmoy Shankar 15 March 2010 (has links)
The object of this research is to develop robust wire-line systems which demonstrate high performance while simultaneously consuming low power. The main focus of this work is the Clock and Data Recovery (CDR) system, which is the primary circuit of any modern wire-line transceiver. Different techniques starting from circuit-level to system-level have been investigated in this work to improve the performance of multi-gigabit CDRs. A 62 GHz bandwidth amplifier has been presented to address the need for a scalable amplifier for CDR needs. A new technique has been proposed to improve the radiation immunity of latches, to reduce the BER in CDRs occurring due to package radiations. An injection-lock based clock recovery method was investigated as an alternative to PLL based CDRs as they can be used for burst-mode wire-line communication. The investigation yielded the vulnerability of the method to jitter (false-locking and high jitter transfer), the attenuation of which is critical to commercial CDRs. A novel false-lock detector system has been proposed and demonstrated for the first time as a robust solution to the issue of false-locking of CDRs due to repetitive patterns. The implementation of the final CDR system required the use of an L-C tank VCO, the components of which are generic for all commercial CDRs. A new systematic layout technique for the VCO has been proposed and demonstrated in this work to substantially improve the layout area and the associated parasitics, approximately by 70 %. This new layout addresses a critical yet often neglected part of VCO design. Furthermore, a new concept has been proposed to optimize static dividers with respect to their power consumption and number of devices.

Harmonization of residential & commercial mixed-use developments : investigation of regulatory issues by case studiesHsieh, Yu-Tang 17 December 2013 (has links)
Mixed-use neighborhoods, which feature increased housing/job variety and density, can create pedestrian and bicycle-friendly environments by reducing dependency on vehicles and traffic congestion, and shortening distances between housing, workplaces and other destinations. Municipal regulations are vital to modern mixed-use developments due to their capability to control the direction of metropolitan growth. In this research, I have attempted to make a correlation between local regulations and current neighborhood development patterns in three well known, mixed-use neighborhoods using the case study approach. Three mixed-use neighborhoods, the North Pearl District (NPD; Portland, Oregon), South Lake Union (SLU; Seattle, Washington) and False Creek North (FCN; Vancouver, Canada), were chosen for this case study research. I examined and visualized the local regulations that pertain to mixed-use development of each neighborhood using Illustrator and SketchUp. I also analyzed and discussed U.S. Census information, including households per acre, average household size and household vehicle occupancy. The investigation indicates that among the three neighborhoods, the mixed-use regulations of FCN are the most straightforward and clear. This is reflected in the consistency between regulations and current land uses. The overall mixed degree in NPD is relatively large likely due to its incentive regulations, making itself as a highly walkable neighborhood. The local regulations in SLU are the most complicated, and focus on attracting innovative firms. In conclusion, we have conducted a study to investigate the development of mixed-use neighborhoods by scrutinizing local regulations and analyzing current situations and statistical data. The results indicated that the straightforward and incentive regulations, such as legalized neighborhood land use plan and bonus floor area ratios, benefit the mixed-use developments of neighborhoods by increasing the efficiency in land use and maximizing the mixed-use degree, thus leading to a compact, walkable and vital community. / text

Referrals from primary eye care : an investigation into their quality, levels of false positives and psychological effect on patientsDavey, Christopher James January 2011 (has links)
Previous research into the accuracy of referrals for glaucoma has shown that a large number of referrals to the Hospital Eye Service are false positive. Research in areas of healthcare other than ophthalmology has shown that psychological distress can be caused by false positive referrals. The present study aimed to evaluate the quality of referrals to the HES for all ocular pathologies, and also to quantify the proportion of these referrals that were false positive. Any commonality between false positive referrals was investigated. The psychological effect of being referred to the HES was also evaluated using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). Both scales were validated in this population with Rasch analysis before use. A final aim was to develop an improvement to the present referral pathway in order to reduce numbers of false positive referrals. The accuracy of referrals to the HES appears to improve as clinicians become more experienced, and greater numbers of false positive referrals are generated by female clinicians. Optometrists refer patients with a wide range of ocular diseases and in most cases include both fundus observations and visual acuity measurements in their referrals. GPs mainly refer patients with anterior segment disorders, particularly lid lesions, based on direct observation and symptoms. Illegibility and missing clinical information reduce the quality of many optometric referrals. Patients referred to the HES experience raised levels of anxiety as measured by the STAI and raised levels of depression as measured by the HADS-Depression subscale. As a method of assessing psychological distress, the questionnaires HADS-T (all items), STAI-S (State subscale) and STAI-T (Trait subscale) show good discrimination between patients when administered to a population of new ophthalmic outpatients, despite all having a floor effect. Subsequently a referral refinement service was developed which reduced numbers of unnecessary referrals and reduced costs for the NHS.

Phonological and semantic list learning with individuals with TBILindsey, Andre Michele 08 July 2011 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to examine the extent to which learning and recall are facilitated by semantic and phonological targets. A list-learning paradigm was administered to 10 individuals with a history of traumatic brain injury. Participants were asked to recall and identify words that were present on the list. The lists consisted of semantically related associate words and phonologically related associate words. Participants recalled significantly more semantically related associates than phonological associates. Demographic factors such as age, time-post injury, and educational attainment did not have a significant effect on the recall ability for either word target type. Word recognition ability also was not influenced by target type. The results of this study found adults with TBI use a semantic network following brain injury and that semantic targets are more beneficial for recall than phonological targets. / text

The changing social and political issues and their impact on the community design of the False Creek south developmentQiu, Jiang 05 1900 (has links)
False Creek is a distinctive neighbourhood in the centre of Vancouver where you would expect to see high density, perhaps high rise development; instead you can see a low and medium rise and low density development with large public open space. It contrasts to the nearby Fairview Slopes and the West End. This thesis tries to investigate and explain what made this land development so different from others.
In the 1960s, liberal ideology emerged in Canada. Its influence was felt here in Vancouver. It was embraced by the upcoming new "class" of professional, technical and administrative workers. This new liberal ideology gave new meanings to the ideas of "growth" and "progress". It promoted social equity and livability in urban development; its priority was placed on people not property.Vancouver was transforming from an industrial city to a service oriented post-industrial city.
A political party founded at this time, The Elector's Action Movement (TEAM), was liberal-oriented and won the municipal election in 1972. Its election co-incided with the False Creek south development. TEAM innovatively administered the development. It broke away from the former administration, the NPA, and innovatively implemented measures to secure a livable and socially mixed community. The implementation of False Creek south in the first two phases was achieved with the commitment of the TEAM City Council and with the blessings from the federal and provincial government. The result is an innovatively designed and socially mixed neighbourhood in downtown Vancouver. What we can see today in False Creek south shore phase I and II is a legacy of what this party achieved in urban development.
With the deterioration of economic situation and the return of a conservative movement in the late 70s and early 80s, TEAM faded away from the municipal politics. Conservative NPA was back to the municipal administration. Urban development was left to the private sector to manipulate.The later two phases became profit driven development with very little concern of social issues. To provide a socially mixed community was not an objective in the later phases in False Creek south. The result is high density, high rise development of the later two phases.
This thesis investigates the False Creek south shore development in and after TEAM administration; compares the policies of the two administrations, and the perception of the role of the administration during and after TEAM control; examines the demographic and physical design differences in the same development between different phases. This helps to reveal the inter-relationship between urban development and civic politics and provides a valuable insight into the effects of policy and ideology on the nature of urban development.

Inducing spontaneity : high-technology led development in False Creek FlatsEng, Kevin 05 1900 (has links)
High-technology and information technology industries represent a growing
component of 'new economy' sector activities. Cities around the world often perceive these
industrial and commercial activities to be high-growth in nature, bringing economic
advantages and benefits to the cities where they are situated within. Concentration of hightechnology
and information technology economic activity in cities has resulted in the
formation of localstrategies and related policy initiatives aimed at attracting these sector
industries into designated areas. Initial problems that ensued revolved around questioning
the legitimacy, effectiveness and appropriateness of implementing these policy initiatives,
which were characteristic of 'induced' development. Impacts on broader issues regarding
the city's space-economy and structure were often not taken into account in these
implemented high-technology led strategies and policies. This thesis responds to these
problems by addressing the planning imperatives of initiating high-technology sector led
development in urban environments.
False Creek Flats was the primary case study examined in this thesis. Due to the
proximity of the False Creek Flats site to Vancouver's metropolitan core, a research
concentration on the inner-city is carried throughout the thesis. The research objectives
and question are aimed at examining challenges posed to planning by following a particular
policy and city initiated development path for high-technology sector concentration in False
Creek Flats. Objectives are focused around the purpose of conducting a policy analysis on
the process and initiatives for high-technology policy formation that occurred over the past
decade in False Creek Flats.
The research methodology consisted of gathering relevant and informing data and
theories through an academic literature review. Information derived from editorial sources
was also utilized to situate issues directly related to the primary case study. City of
Vancouver policies, documents and sources represented a majority of the primary sources
pertaining to the policy analysis of the high-technology framework for False Creek Flats. An
internship conducted with the City of Vancouver Central Area Planning Division contributed
to gaining access to information and planning perspective on the Flats high-technology led
strategy.
The stated imperatives to planning are based on False Creek Flats high-technology
led strategy's classification as a primarily induced development. Imperatives exhibited in
the policy framework formation and details are the importance of the proactive and assertive
stance taken by the City of Vancouver and Planning Department. Flexibility, evolution and
innovation to formulate new planning responses to deal with the problems and opportunities
of implementing high-technology initiatives in the Flats were found to be essential. Planning
implications for this case study include the ability to examine the issues from a broader
perspective to take into account ramifications on existing city policy, structure and function.
These planning elements are going to be critical in maintaining the original guiding
principles, vision and goals for high-technology sector concentration in False Creek Flats.

Executive Functioning and Theory of Mind Development: A Training StudyBenson, Jeannette Elizabeth 01 October 2007 (has links)
This study was conducted to investigate the processes underlying the relation between executive functioning and false belief knowledge. We explored the hypothesis that children with advanced executive functioning skills are better equipped to capitalize on the experiences that are necessary to learn how to reason about others’ mental states. To examine this possibility, we recruited 3.5-year-old children with age-appropriate variability in executive functioning skills to participate in a training study designed to promote their performance on false belief tasks. We found that individual differences in executive functioning task scores strongly and consistently predicted the extent to which children benefited from false-belief training. Importantly, the relation between executive functioning and false belief improvement remained significant after controlling for age, initial performance on mental state reasoning tasks, language skills, and executive functioning improvement across the testing period. Thus, our results support the hypothesis that executive functioning skills influence the extent to which children are able to capitalize on relevant experience to better predict and understand others’ false-belief-based behaviour. Assessing Binary Measurement SystemsDanila, Oana Mihaela January 2012 (has links)
Binary measurement systems (BMS) are widely used in both manufacturing industry and medicine. In industry, a BMS is often used to measure various characteristics of parts and then classify them as pass or fail, according to some quality standards. Good measurement systems are essential both for problem solving (i.e., reducing the rate of defectives) and to protect customers from receiving defective products. As a result, it is desirable to assess the performance of the BMS as well as to separate the effects of the measurement system and the production process on the observed classifications. In medicine, BMSs are known as diagnostic or screening tests, and are used to detect a target condition in subjects, thus classifying them as positive or negative. Assessing the performance of a medical test is essential in quantifying the costs due to misclassification of patients, and in the future prevention of these errors.
In both industry and medicine, the most commonly used characteristics to quantify the performance a BMS are the two misclassification rates, defined as the chance of passing a nonconforming (non-diseased) unit, called the consumer's risk (false positive), and the chance of failing a conforming (diseased) unit, called the producer's risk (false negative). In most assessment studies, it is also of interest to estimate the conforming (prevalence) rate, i.e. probability that a randomly selected unit is conforming (diseased).
There are two main approaches for assessing the performance of a BMS. Both approaches involve measuring a number of units one or more times with the BMS. The first one, called the "gold standard" approach, requires the use of a gold-standard measurement system that can determine the state of units with no classification errors. When a gold standard does not exist, is too expensive or time-consuming, another option is to repeatedly measure units with the BMS, and then use a latent class approach to estimate the parameters of interest. In industry, for both approaches, the standard sampling plan involves randomly selecting parts from the population of manufactured parts.
In this thesis, we focus on a specific context commonly found in the manufacturing industry. First, the BMS under study is nondestructive. Second, the BMS is used for 100% inspection or any kind of systematic inspection of the production yield. In this context, we are likely to have available a large number of previously passed and failed parts. Furthermore, the inspection system typically tracks the number of parts passed and failed; that is, we often have baseline data about the current pass rate, separate from the assessment study. Finally, we assume that during the time of the evaluation, the process is under statistical control and the BMS is stable.
Our main goal is to investigate the effect of using sampling plans that involve random selection of parts from the available populations of previously passed and failed parts, i.e. conditional selection, on the estimation procedure and the main characteristics of the estimators. Also, we demonstrate the value of combining the additional information provided by the baseline data with those collected in the assessment study, in improving the overall estimation procedure. We also examine how the availability of baseline data and using a conditional selection sampling plan affect recommendations on the design of the assessment study.
In Chapter 2, we give a summary of the existing estimation methods and sampling plans for a BMS assessment study in both industrial and medical settings, that are relevant in our context. In Chapters 3 and 4, we investigate the assessment of a BMS in the case where we assume that the misclassification rates are common for all conforming/nonconforming parts and that repeated measurements on the same part are independent, conditional on the true state of the part, i.e. conditional independence. We call models using these assumptions fixed-effects models. In Chapter 3, we look at the case where a gold standard is available, whereas in Chapter 4, we investigate the "no gold standard" case. In both cases, we show that using a conditional selection plan, along with the baseline information, substantially improves the accuracy and precision of the estimators, compared to the standard sampling plan.
In Chapters 5 and 6, we investigate the case where we allow for possible variation in the misclassification rates within conforming and nonconforming parts, by proposing some new random-effects models. These models relax the fixed-effects model assumptions regarding constant misclassification rates and conditional independence. As in the previous chapters, we focus on investigating the effect of using conditional selection and baseline information on the properties of the estimators, and give study design recommendations based on our findings.
In Chapter 7, we discuss other potential applications of the conditional selection plan, where the study data are augmented with the baseline information on the pass rate, especially in the context where there are multiple BMSs under investigation.
