Delivering the super, natural goods : commodifying wilderness in British Columbia

Giles, Douglas E. A. 11 1900 (has links)
This thesis places the values shared by recreational hikers, backpackers, kayakers, and others within the British Columbia Forest Debate in the second half of the twentieth century. Using the 1985-86 Wilderness Advisory Committee as a case study, it argues that the interpretation of the concept of “wilderness” expressed by these outdoor enthusiasts can only be understood through the study of North American consumer culture. They valued “wilderness” as a commodity, not unlike the ways that forest and mining companies did, yet also expressed environmentalist concerns about protecting “wilderness” areas from resource exploitation and overdevelopment.

Apyvalaitė, Renata 23 June 2005 (has links)

Larsson, Anders January 2013 (has links)
We are living today under climate threats which more or less will affect us all. In light of this, the construction industry has chosen to start conversion towards a more sustainable sector. Meanwhile, eco-houses and eco-villages, have been built up as an alternative way to stay healthy.   The aim of this work has been to examine which choices developers / clients make during the planning of new housing. I have chosen not to look at energy, but focused on the way choices are made during planning of living apartments.   To find out what choices could be considered as ecological / environmental a literature review was first made. To find out how the participant companies are choosing a survey was made. The responses were then compared with a fictitious company that would follow all advice literature meant was pro-environmental. The comparison was then made by a weighted scoring. It turned out that the companies got points that accounted for roughly 50 - 60% of the fictive. The survey also gave an overview of the choices they made and what they should be able to choose in order to build even more greener. The survey showed that the companies had the potential for it.

A Place for Healing: Architecture as Intermediary Between Nature and the Healing Child

Bolen, Alexandra 10 July 2012 (has links)
This thesis investigates the difficult reality of children faced with illness, necessitating prolonged hospitalization. It takes a critical position with regard to the current approach to health care in Canada within the institution of the hospital. Through an exploration of environmental and experiential factors of proven importance to the child’s healing process, this thesis seeks to understand the role of architecture in healing. It does not presume that architecture alone has the power to heal, nor does it propose a tabula rasa approach; instead it seeks to explore the possibility of offering a complement to the current health care system, through the exploration of the potential positive physical and psychological impact of place in the healing process. Using Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada and the IWK Children’s Hospital as a context for investigation, this thesis explores the design of a satellite healthcare building situated in Point Pleasant Park (Halifax), where uninterrupted medical treatment is to be offered, supported by a home-like setting and constant contact with nature.

One of many, one with all: (re)searching how to live in this world

Fullerton, Kathryn 19 November 2009 (has links)
Rational thought has dominated Western knowledge structures and systems for many centuries; our instinctual natures have largely been repressed. The purpose of this study is to find out what my bodymind is telling me about how to live in this world. I use arts based methodology to explore how I experience the place in which I live, to find my voice and to navigate through liminal spaces. As I spent time in the natural environment, I increasingly became more aware of my body and of the many animate beings with which I share this place. If we can understand/know/experience the processes by which we became separate from our instinctual natures, then there might be hope to bring ourselves back to the knowledge that we belong and are a part of all of creation. Everything is an Argument: A Poetry Collection

2013 August 1900 (has links)
This thesis is comprised of thirty-three poems which I have written over the last year. All are lyrical and most are written in free verse, although there are a few traditional forms as well. The poems treat a range of topics and have been arranged accordingly under four broad categories: The Social, The Spiritual, The Natural, and Poetics. These four categories represent the main themes explored in the collection and serve to unify the poems according to topic. However, nearly every poem echoes, either in imagery or in ideas, the dominant themes from one or more of the three categories to which it does not belong, and these linkages are as integral to the overall structure of the work as its divisions. Titled “Everything is an Argument,” this thesis explores the emotional and intellectual stances we take in response to our experiences and surroundings. At the same time, it seeks to reflect that the boundaries between our critical categories are permeable, and that the way we understand the world in one respect is intrinsically linked to the way we encounter it in other areas. Furthermore, what the things are that we encounter are as fluid as our understanding of them, and while our labels are useful, even important in certain ways, they need not be absolutely delimiting.

Imagining an Ecopolitical Space

Schmitt, Heather 09 October 2008 (has links)
There exist at present a broad range of environmental challenges, and there are strong and varied movements seeking to take action on these issues in a range of ways. What is deeply contested, however, is how these environmental problems should be framed, and through what means solutions ought to be developed. At the heart of these questions is the need to critically evaluate dominant political framings that seek to contain and manage, rather than engage, these ecological challenges. What is required instead is the development of viable ecopolitical practices that are able to generate practicable solutions while retaining the capacity to grow, develop, and sustain life. In addressing the challenge of theorizing such a viable ecopolitics, I work to productively combine phenomenologically-informed understandings of place with an Arendtian formulation of the conditions of political life in a way that can help to create inhabited ecological spaces of appearance. Such spaces can offer the potential to respectfully include ecological considerations in political decision-making, to foster an acknowledgement and valuing of the situatedness of particular political actions, and to open up discursive and interpretive possibilities while maintaining this openness through sustained political negotiation. In order to explore the possibilities and potential implications of such an ecopolitical space, I begin by outlining what I understand to be the current ecopolitical challenge and its associated problematic inclusive and exclusive dynamics. I move on to offer a possible response to this ecopolitical challenge through an exploration of particular characteristics of place experience and the potential for phenomenological views of place to gather various elements of the more-than-human world into an arena of common engagement or appearance. Critically examining current state-centric political framings, and their inability to adequately meet this ecopolitical challenge, I appeal instead to a richer and more dynamic Arendtian formulation of political life. Finally I work to develop an understanding of how this expanded conception of the political can be combined with phenomenological understandings of place to begin to create vibrant and creative ecopolitical spaces in practice. / Thesis (Master, Environmental Studies) -- Queen's University, 2008-10-03 10:40:41.455
