Growing Up Catholic in Sunshine, 1919-1927, The Establishment of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Primary School: A journey in historiographyLane, Maureen, res.cand@acu.edu.au January 1999 (has links)
This study is, in effect, the compilation and the telling of the story of the establishment of the school of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception at Sunshine, it seeks to add to the quantum of knowledge available in regard to: First - the story of that particular school's establishment, Second - its derivation from and contribution to the \vider context of the development of Catholic education in Victoria, and Third - its place in the story of the growth of a suburban community as a reflection of some of the social forces which were operating in Victoria at that time. This thesis is the result of an invitation by the writer to a number of people to collaborate in constructing the storf. These people ranged from those who, as children, attended the new school, and those whose experience of its establishment was a generation removed but who, nevertheless. claim an affinity ,with the school and its society, to those archivists, professional and otherwise, whose task or desire is to keep alive the historical foundations of our culture. It this thesis is attached to any particular school of historiography it would be closest to the Annales school as outlined in The Living Past: Western Historiographical Traditions (1975). As Andrea and Schmokel describe it, The labors of love of a group of historians associated with the journal Les Annales have produced a wealth of informative detail studies about the life styles, living standards, social values and assumptions about various social groups in all periods of French and European history. (This school) simply seeks to recover knowledge about the past as it was lived. (p.266) In the light of postmodern criticism developed since 1975, this thesis acknowledges directly the ideological base from which the author is coming. Nevertheless, it remains within the orbit of Annales historiography in that it seeks to

The tragedy of Isabel Archer in The portrait of a ladyGarcia, Rosalia Angelita Neumann January 1994 (has links)
The importance of classical tragedy, and Greek art in general, has been analyzed in itself and in relation to many works which were produced throughout the history of literature. The idea of "modern tragedy" is important in this sense, since it will explain the transportation of elements of Greek tragedy to literary works of diverse historical periods, with the necessary and natural transformation tragedy went through due to the differences of time, place, culture, etc. In any case, the long-lasting influence of this ancient form of art is a source of a great number of studies The Portrait of a Lady, by Henry James, published in 1881, is a modern novel which will be analyzed in this dissertation as having a tragic view of life. This can be seen through the actions of the principal character and in the turn of events which occur. The modern elements of tragedy present in the novel will be related to the classical ones to analyze the dilemma the heroine, Isabel Archer, faces, and to describe the ambiguity and contradictions this heroine deals with in judging and choosing the action she will take The necessity to organize the narrative patterns which indicated the tragic view in James' novel, led to a brief review of some ideas taken from semiotics, specifically those connected to the study of the polarity of signs in language. In this way, signs could be extracted from the novel to form two pairs of poles which functioned as a means of interpreting the tragedy of the heroine, Isabel, through the ambiguity present in the images used in narrative.

It is undeniable that the society over the years has undergone constant changes in both social and economic aspects, which not only promoted a change in modern man, but was also reflected in the arts, allowing the emergence of modern drama as a way of representation of the man in transformation and their concerns. With the advent of modern drama it is not possible to think of a single way of conceiving the theater, since now we can consider the existence of the drama in its plurality, in which its various manifestations now seek to reflect the modern man as it is. Therefore, some now propose a committed theater, whose goal would be to awaken the people out of the inertia that they are, urging them to begin to act against the veiled injustices that become more frequent. Friedrich Dürrenmatt, Swiss playwright, lived in a period marked by war and its consequences. This atmosphere coupled with a tendency to a hybrid composition in modern drama would result in a series of plays that reflect critically and ironically the man of his time. The playwright in his vision of modern society argued that no genre would be more appropriate to represent it than comedy. Although he does not exclude the possibility of the tragic, he understood that this would only be possible in a hybrid form, the tragicomedy. Taking one of his most significant plays, this work is focused on his tragicomic play The visit of the old lady, first published in 1956, seeking to examine how the tragic and the comic are manifested within the play, as well as how such features interact with themself and with the other features, such as, for example, the grotesque. Furthermore, it also noted the dialogue between Dürrenmatt and the epic theater of Brecht, his contemporary.
