Plant diversity and its effects on populations of cucumber beetles and their natural enemies in a cucurbit agroecosystemWalker, Jason 22 August 2008 (has links)
Populations of striped cucumber beetles (<i>Acalymma vittatum</i> Fabr.), spotted cucumber beetles (<i>Diabrotica undecimpunctata howardi</i> Barber), western cucumber beetles (<i>Acalymma trivittatum</i> Mann.), Pennsylvania leatherwings (<i>Chauliognathus pennsylvanicus</i> DeGeer), Diptera (Order: Diptera), lady beetles (Order: Coleoptera, Family: Coccinellidae), hymenoptera (Order: Hymenoptera), and spiders (Order: Araneae) in a cucumber field and a bordering field of uncultivated vegetation were assessed using yellow sticky traps to determine: 1) the relative abundances of target insects across the uncultivated vegetation and the crop field, 2) relationships between target insects and plant species. In both years populations striped and spotted cucumber beetles and Pennsylvania leatherwings (only in 1995) increased significantly and Diptera decreased significantly in the direction of the crop. The strength of these relationships increased over the season to a peak in August in 1995 and July in 1996 and then decreased in September in both years. There were significant correlations between Diptera and sweet-vernal grass in 1995. In 1996, cucumber beetles were correlated with wild violet (<i>Viola</i> spp.) and white clover (<i>Trifolium repens</i>); Diptera with wild violets; and the lady beetle <i>Coleomegilla maculata</i> with goldenrod (<i>Solidago</i> spp.), English plantain (<i>Plantago lanceolata</i>), and marjoram (<i>Origanum</i> spp.) in 1996. This study demonstrated the potential value of increasing the diversity of a cucumber field to control insect pests (and thus reduce pesticide useage) as well as suggested specific plants that influenced insect populations. / Master of Science

Musical Persona : A case study of Lady GagaNagy, Zsófia January 2024 (has links)
Throughout her career, the artist and singer Lady Gaga has portrayed a great number of personas in her performances. This thesis uses Gaga’s performances of ”Paparazzi”, ”The Edge of Glory”, and ”Million Reasons” to evaluate how her musical personas have been expressed between 2009 and 2018. Philip Auslander’s theories on musical personas are applied as a tool to examine and analyze Lady Gaga’s use of personas in nine performances. The results of the analysis suggest that, in addition to genre conventions, performance contexts also impacted the adaptations of Gaga’s musical personas. Furthermore, Gaga’s Born This Way Ball tour showcased how a musician can adopt a temporary character tailored for a specific tour plot, suggesting the idea of a “tour persona” as a distinct entity separate from musical personas and song characters. The conclusion drawn from the case study suggests that the term ”persona adjustment” may be more suitable than ”persona development” or ”evolvement” when analyzing changes in musical personas over time. Finally, Gaga's changing personas in this case study challenge Auslander's idea that a performer's persona development relies on longevity and audience negotiation, as Gaga's artistic image is sustained through unpredictable fashion choices and diverse mannerisms.

Looking through a Different Lens, Beyond Censorship: The American Reception of Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk DistrictCassell, Holly 08 1900 (has links)
The censorship of Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District is a familiar story to musicologists, but reception of the opera is not frequently mentioned. Examining the reception of a work can bring a work's relative importance into focus. In this thesis, German literary and reception theorist Hans Robert Jauss's model of the horizon of expectations is applied to reviews of American productions of Lady Macbeth. Curiosity about communism following the Great Depression in 1930s, America and American music critics' knowledge that Soviet composers worked for the Soviet regime led to the belief that Lady Macbeth was officially approved export from the Soviet Union. When the article condemning the opera as a Western formalism appeared in the Soviet magazine, Pravda, Americans needed to adjust their understanding of Lady Macbeth as a socialist expression. Following the work's revival in San Francisco in 1981, the influence of Solomon Volkov's Testimony is prevalent in many reviews. Many reviewers use Volkov's narrative of Shostakovich as covert dissident of the Soviet Union to assert that the censorship of the opera was about the content of the plot and not the music. Following the Soviet rejection of the work, American critics tried to claim Shostakovich for the West based on the values of individual freedom and feminism set forth in Lady Macbeth.

[pt] EU NASCI ASSIM: UMA ANÁLISE SUBCULTURAL DA CULTURA DE FÃS DE LADY GAGA E BEYONCÉ NO RIO DE JANEIRO / [en] I WAS BORN THIS WAY: NA SUBCULTURAL ANALYSIS OF THE LADY GAGA S AND BEYONCÉ S FAN CULTURES IN RIO DE JANEIROLIVIA PESSANHA BOESCHENSTEIN SANTOS 23 May 2019 (has links)
[en] This work aims to study the culture of fans in Rio de Janeiro, its forms of communication and interaction with the city. This study also focuses on understanding how fans perceive their idols, once they present themselves to society and the media, often as superior or indefectible beings. The act of being a fan is already investigated by researchers and on the other hand carries some meanings that sometimes are pejoratives while handled by the common sense and also by some mediatic contexts. By using the subculture studies approach in an etnography it was possible to verify that the impact of the studied pop divas, Lady Gaga and Beyoncé, on their respective fandoms, Little Monsters and Beyhive, takes place not only in the entertainment area, but also in a very subjective way. The fan cultures acts as the creator of highly organized social groups both in the digital and in the real world, promoting not only their well-being, but also political and ideological debates, in order to stimulate reflection on the minorities to which they belong to, and the fight against the most diverse types of discrimination suffered by participants of the fandoms.

Die diskoers van Antjie Krog se Lady Anne (1989)Crous, Matthys Lourens 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (DLitt)--University of Stellenbosch, 2002 / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die ondersoek in hierdie studie sentreer random die diskoers in Antjie Krog se sewende
digbundel, Lady Anne (1989).
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This dissertation centers on the discourse in Antjie Krog's seventh volume of poetry,
Lady Anne (1989). The central thesis of the dissertation is to analyse the way in which the
discourse of the text under discussion is being ordered and produced. The theoretical
approach is based on Foucault's discourse analysis. Foucault (1981) defines discourse as,
among others, the social usage of language within specific contexts and as part of specific
institutions. According to Foucault, discourse has an internal order or formation which
one can reveal by way of an archaeological approach; it also has a regulatory function
which not only delineates meaning, but produces meaning in the more positive sense of
the word (Foucault, 1981). If one analyses this regulatory function by way of a
genealogical approach, it appears as if discourse exercises power over mechanisms such
as knowledge, truth and self (Foucault, 1980). Discourse articulates knowledge that the
self claims as a particular truth. This calls to mind issues such as the problem of freedom
and political resistance.
This dissertation focuses on the following issues pertaining to the discourse in Lady
Anne: the discursive patterns in the text, the limitations placed on the production of
discourse (Foucault, 1981), the author function as used by Foucault (1979), the
fictionalization of the history of Lady Anne Barnard by means of a genealogical approach
(Foucault, 1970; 1972). Another pertinent issue that will be analysed is the
aestheticisation of the political discourse in South Africa, as well as the manner in which
a voice is given to the so-called Other.
The central issue of this investigation is the following: What is the position of white
creative women in South Africa and how is this position being inscribed into the
discourse of Afrikaans literature? Concomitantly, issues such as subjectivity, the
description of the object, as well as the subject's position within the literary tradition will
be analysed.
